An equestrian facility as we like it - and we like to share it
It’s taken a few years - more than we’d hoped - to build our own small equestrian yard near our home in St. Agnes. The whole family ride and we’ve had land and horses for many years but until mid-2018 had only aspired to a great facility of our own. The key component is, of course, the sand school and we’re delighted with the 50m outdoor manege built by W.D. Julyan (Cornwall Arenas) with its silica sand and fibre surface. What a difference it makes to the training we can do with our horses! The adjacent American Barn stable block provides excellent cover for six stables with good lighting and ventilation. There’s plenty of space for a secure tack room, feed room, horse shower/clip stall, WC and common room in the layout that we’ve devised. The yard has 18 acres of adjoining land for grazing - with access to more - and this development will sustain these paddocks as verdant permanent pasture on the outskirts of the village. We enjoy access to some lovely hacks around this coastal area of the county including Trevellas Cove, St. Agnes Head, The Beacon, Chapel Porth, Towan Cross and further afield. It’s only a short drive for a great beach ride at Perranporth with three miles of sand and the dunes behind. All in all, it’s been well worth the effort though project management turned out to be harder than we thought! Now we’re very lucky to be using our own great facility and having even more fun sharing it with some great DIY livery clients. We currently have seven clients and everyone brings something to the party with their different equestrian interests and experience, not to mention support and friendship. We hire out the sand school. We hosted our first holiday liveries over Christmas.
