Highly detailed African elephant portrait which measures 36” x 24” (approx 91.5cm x 61cm). I absolutely loved creating this piece using lightfast colour pencils and archival quality paper.

He took me approx 180hours to complete, a journey of happy and sad tears.

“The lighting I created from an idea in my head - I wanted to encapsulate the warm glow as the sun touches his uneven skin and the cold colours in the shadow. These absolutely magnificent animals have an extraordinarily hard time not only because of mother natures trials but those of human impact!

One tusk appears to be glowing in the sun and the other dull and dark in the shadows but yet they are just the same in the same light. They have a purpose to the elephants and NOT TO HUMANS!!!

If you look closely enough I’ve included tears which to me also bring a sense of sadness to this piece despite his beauty. Weeping for loss.

So many of my own emotions went into drawing him. I’ve always wanted to create art that resonates with me - something deep and meaningful. I want the viewer to feel a sense of interconnectedness when looking at my artwork, not just that it’s a pretty picture” K Hester.

There’s never an even balance in life but there’s always something to be thankful for and something you can do to help either yourself or others into the positive light.

Sorry for being so quiet on here but I’ve been busy working on this huge elephant portrait which infact took me about 180hrs to complete!

It’s 24”x36” (approx 61cm x 91.5cm) on Fabriano Artistico HP archival quality paper using Faber Castell lightfast polychromos colour pencils.

I’m thrilled with how this piece has turned out, it’s my first time drawing an elephant.
I changed the lighting from the reference photo to capture the warm sun but it also has a deeper meaning…which I will share soon.

I absolutely love capturing as many tiny details as possible in each piece, creating depth and the hyper realisitic look using colour pencils. There’s no set way I draw and each portrait is drawn differently from start to finish. I enjoy getting lost in time when drawing almost falling into another world.

I always find it hard when a drawing goes through what I call the ugly stage when I’m mapping out the colours, contrasts, fur/hair direction…then it just clicks and all makes sense. This lioness from Kruger national park was a fun challenge and I changed the colours from the reference photo allowing myself to create the lighting effect that I wanted. Lionesses are such incredible animals which I admire.

“Leo” is also my start sign ♌️🦁

I wanted to capture the warm sun touching her softly yet keeping her intense stare as the focal point. These incredible lions and lioness endure a multitude of hardships daily just to survive. This lioness in particular is from the Kruger National Park in South Africa.

One day I will travel to Africa and see these wild animals roaming in their habitat! I hope to get even more inspiration from my surroundings from that experience and channelling it into creating more artwork.

20% of the proceeds from this lioness original portrait sold will be donated to supporting vital wildlife conservation efforts through DSWF.

I cried when I received the email today confirming she had been chosen! I’m floating on cloud 9 and feel so unbelievably happy and privileged to be part of such a wonderful cause! Excited to be exhibiting at the Mall Galleries in July and to see everyone else’s incredible work in person!
