Dear friends, family, colleagues, and our wonderful clients
It is with a heavy heart and great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved David Talbot.
After joining the practice in 1976 Dave throughout the years gained the trust of many a patient and client, he gave 38 years of outstanding service to E.C Straiton and Partners and we will be forever grateful to have had so many memorable years with him.
Dave was always a familiar, smiling, reliable face at our Rugeley Branch as well as being a much loved and very well respected part of our farming community.
After a well-deserved retirement in 2017 Dave continued to be a regular visitor to the practice and the solid, lifelong friendships that he made over the years remained.
E.C Straiton and Partners was and will always be such a massive part of Dave’s life and for this reason we would like to extend an invitation to all who wish to attend his funeral.
A service will be held on Thursday 5th September at 12.40pm
Bradwell Crematorium,
Chatterley C,
Newcastle-under-Lyme
ST5 8LE
A gathering will be held afterwards at
Penkridge Peace Memorial Hall
Pinfold Ln,
Penkridge,
Stafford
ST19 5AP
Any fond memories or photos you wish to share of Dave over the years will be greatly received on this post.
As we all know, Dave was partial to a good cup of tea and a cream cake or two, so please join us in enjoying a cup of tea and a cream cake in celebration of his life.
May our memories and our love for Dave live on in our hearts always.
With thanks from everyone past and present at E.C Straiton and Partners
Shadow 🤩
Shadow the gorgeous German Shepherd came to us in May for neutering.
He was such a good lad and a super patient to nurse. Here he is having a break away from his kennel and enjoying a lovely walk in the paddock.
Are you considering Neutering your dog❓
If so call for an appointment for a pre anaesthetic check and discuss this with one of our Veterinary surgeons.
Ninja 🤩
Ninja came in for a spey in May and loved a cuddle from our SVN Alex.
Doesn't a cuddle just make you feel better.
Ninja recovered so quick from her surgery. Being a puppy it's hard to contain your excitement.
Introducing another new Veterinary Surgeon Lee 😁
Lee came to us in June after leaving his welsh mountains behind.
Lee qualified in 2017 from Liverpool University.
Lee has lots of experience and has a particular interest in equine. Lee specifically has a keen interest in dentistry and medicine.
Away from work Lee spends his time between his new home here with his partner and back home in the welsh mountains.
Lee enjoys the outdoors and spends most of his time out and about exploring either on foot or in his campervan. 🚍
Introducing you all to our new Veterinary Surgeon Yasmine 😁
Yasmine graduated from Charles Sturt University in Australia with a BVetBio/VetSci (Hons I) in 2022 and before that she completed a BAniVetBioSci (Hons I) from the University of Sydney.
After her studies, Yasmine practised as a Farm Animal Veterinarian in South-West Wales during busy calving and lambing seasons where she developed her skills in farm animal surgery and medicine.
Yasmine spends most of her time with her partner and her dogs Peaches and Hugo, exploring new areas, trying new recipes and enjoying a nice glass of wine. In her spare time, Yasmine makes fibre art and crochets and regularly visits her grandparents in South Wales. She loves all animals great and small with her favourites being cows, dogs and rabbits!
Yasmine joined us at the beginning of July this year and is looking forward to meeting all of our lovely clients both on farm and in the clinic!
Say Hello if you see Yasmine around the practice 👋
We had Merle and Bailie in for their 2nd vaccines at Rugeley this morning! What a pair of cuties! 🐾🐾

Grass seed Alert 🚨
We have had multiple patients in over the last few weeks with issues with grass seeds.
🌱Grass seeds can become embedded within your pets digits. As the grass seed develops it can grow rapidly and tract into limbs.
☘️Some patients have had grass seeds within their ears 👂
Most patients require a sedation or general anaesthetic to remove them . Careful consideration is required, we need to ensure no further trauma is caused when in the process of removing it.
Fortunately most patients have recovered and the issue has resolved once the grass seed has been removed 🙌
Our advice would be :
🐾Please check your pets feet, limbs and ears after they have been walked, especially in long grassland or any farmers fields.
Look out for grass seeds;
👂🌱Common symptoms of grass seeds in the ears are; scratching at ears or face, shaking their head and discomfort.
🌱🐾Common symptoms of a grass seed in the paws are; your pets chewing constantly at their paws, cyst like lumps that are red and inflamed, no response to treatment and lameness.
📞 Please call us if you have concerns of a possible grass seed making your pet uncomfortable.
Here is one of our patients who has been recently been with us and required a sedation to remove a grass seed from his ear.
Blood donation 🩸
Another hero this week is Enzo.
Enzo donated his blood to a patient a couple of months ago to ensure they have the best chance of recovery post surgery.
Enzo was more than happy to step in to help out. Thank you to Enzo's parents for bringing him down at such short notice.
Here he is with his present. He loved his Giarrafe.
Thank you Enzo ❤️ You were a super star ⭐
If you think your dog is a great candidate to donate their blood. Please check out the requirements on The Pet Blood Bank Website.
Jacks blood donation, what a hero!🦸♂️
Sometimes our patients are critical and need blood very urgent, although we have the amazing pet blood bank we also have some our very own patients that can be available to donate fresh blood. 🩸
These patients meet the guidelines and are already blood typed. 🩸Nurses Nicky and Helen are here taking the blood, as you can see it can be tricky as the needle needs to stay in the vein to get the full sample. 🩸
The blood has to be agitated so it doesn't clot and weighed until the correct amount is collected. Well done team and of course Jack, who would of been given a yummy meal/ treat after 🦴
⚠️Road Closed⚠️
Please allow extra time on your journey for your appointment today as the Cannock Road from Cocksparrow lane to Pillaton is closed.

Help us help Wildlife 🦔🐦⬛
Here is a little bit of it information about helping wildlife care during summer months ☀️
Although we are enjoying the glorious sunshine, unfortunately this can make our British wildlife vulnerable.
We are experiencing a large amount of Hedgehogs and other wildlife being brought to us, many severely lethargic due to being dehydrated. Most of the time, unless injured, these animals just need water 💦
If any wildlife is found to be injured, you are welcome to bring to ourselves for car. However, they are best being cared for by wildlife specialist centres. We can point you in the right direction if the wildlife are unharmed. If they need to be assessed please leave them with us and we can arrange to have them transferred afterwards to receive ongoing support and rehabilitation.
Below are some Do’s and Don’ts for looking after our British wildlife:
Wildlife Do’s:
• Water readily available!!! 💦
Due to warmer weather, our wildlife will need access to water at all times to keep them cool and hydrated! Provision of bird baths and shallow bowls -especially for our hedgehogs, as it can make it easy for them to access!
• Provide cover such as; bird houses can provide shade for our feather friends 🐦⬛🛖
• Have readily available bird feed and hedgehog food to feed those searching for food.
Did you know that hedgehogs tend to enjoy cat food either wet or dry-> *NOT FISH BASED*
• Injured wildlife can be taken to the local veterinary practice for treatment or a local wildlife rescue centre for rehabilitation.
Wildlife Don'ts
- ⚠️ Do Not Give Hedgehogs Milk ⚠️
- Care when strimming hedges and lawns as wildlife may seek rest in those areas so make sure to check before carrying out gardening work.
- Ensure when out fishing you remove all netting. 🎣
Fishing tack can become wrapped around wildlife and constrict over time causing trauma and extensive treatment is sometimes not possible depending on the severity.
- Pick up your rubbish🗑️
When wildlife are hungry, this makes become desperate for food. They then become attractive to litter. This can result in them getting stuck with no one to help. Leading to suffocation or becoming severely injured.
- FLEGDELINGS 🐦⬛🐣->> often baby birds are prone to straying or falling from the nest. This leads then to look vulnerable to us as we do not see their parents. During this time, it is important not to interfere as the parents are often nearby. If you are worried about them being left, place them somewhere safe in the same area as their parents are often nearby – ONLY MOVE IF THEY ARE INJURED FOR TREATMENT.
Anyone who may feel they have other recommendations please comment below.
No opinions just facts please 😊
Remember be respectful and kind.
Please let us all help out beautiful wildlife 🦔🐦⬛
Update 2:10pm. Owner has been found.
Sad news 😔
Unfortunately a member of public has brought in a cat that was involved in a road traffic accident this morning and unfortunately did not survive the impact.

Puppy parties 🐶🥳
Here is Heidi who was very proud of herself and enjoyed showing off her certificate after she completed our puppy socialisation classes.
These classes run every wednesday at 7pm- 7:45pm.
If you have a puppy and you are a client of ours please get in touch with the nurses that run them.

Dave 😎
Looking proud in his surgical suite.
Dave came in for a mass removal and he was so chilled.
When a mass is removed there is the option to send it to the external laboratory 👨🔬
The laboratory will analyse what type of mass it is, whether it is likely to come back and tells us if the margins are clear (if we have all the tissue that is part of the mass) 🔬
This is optional for all clients due to the additional costs involved. You can never tell 100% on physical presentation of a mass. Therefore, we will always advise to send all masses off for external analysis.
Dave we enjoyed having you with us for the day, you were a little delight 😁
Terry 🥰
Terry came for an appointment in May after his owners reports he had started to drink more and urinate more.
Urine samples were tested, bloods were run and an ultrasound was performed. But all came back clear 😁
Terry was such a adorable patient and had plenty of love and attention with RVN Lili.
Hope your okay Terry, you were a star patient ⭐
Evening all, Another warm weather tip! ☀️Please remember to check your sheds! With warm weather and no water a trapped cat could become dehydrated and very ill. 🐈⬛🐈⬛🐈⬛
More warm weather tips! ☀️ Areas on your pet with thin or light coloured fur, especially nose, ears and belly can be vulnerable to UV rays.
☀️Limit time in direct sun, advisable to also avoid heat stroke.
☀️Apply pet safe suncream, only areas unable to lick and avoid eyes.
Lizzie 🌷
Lizzie came in for radiographs due to ongoing lameness. Here she is relaxed in her kennel receiving some attention which she loved.
Lizzie enjoyed a little walk to our paddock too 😎
All our patients are offered a little walk post op if they feel up to it. Lizzie was more than willing to have a little fresh air.
Hope your all enjoying the weather 🌤
Sad new, unfortunately a cat found in cannock was brought to us last night deceased. Male entire, ginger and white. No microchip, so no owner known. If you know any information or think he may be yours please contact the practice. 😢

Here is Ziggy 😁 Ziggy comes in for monthly Librella injections to help with his arthritis. 🦴What is Arthritis? This is a condition that leads to pain and progressive degeneration of the joint. This affects their mobility causing painful joints and in severe cases a poor quality of life. 🦴What are the signs of Arthritis? Although some signs can be subtle some dogs can randomally yelp out, cry or vocalise when pain is experienced. Other signs are limping, slowing down on walks, slow to rise and difficulty jumping. 🦴What dogs are prone to Arthritis? Arthritis usually occurs in older, overweight and larger breed dogs. However, it can affect dogs of all sizes, ages and breeds. Many cases go undiagnosed because owners assume slowing down in a natural symptom of getting older. 🦴What should you do if you feel your dog has Arthritis? As pet owners you are the ones who can recognize these signs and if think your pet could benefit from medication to help them please call us to arrange an appointment with one of our Veterinary Surgeons so we can help provide your pet the pain relief they need. 💉What is Librella? Librela is an innovative new therapy called a Monoclonal Antibody. It is a biological therapy that works like your dog’s own immune system. It targets and neutralises a protein that stimulates pain in patients with arthritis. It's a subcutaneous injection that lasts for up to a month💉 🚨Just note: This is a medication that a Veterinary Surgeon has to prescribe if they feel your pet will benefit from 🚨 Don't forget your cat's. They too experience arthritis and there is also a injection called Solensia. Please wait for our Solensia post - coming soon 😁
It's Saturday 🐽 OINK Hope you all have a lovely weekend 🥰 This is Ronnie who we just adored when he came last month for his castration. He soon tucked into some delicious food post op.
Fable 🥰 Making muffins is just adorable to see. Here is Fable post procedure performing some great muffin kneading 🧁 Fable was lovely and content post op as you can see. We just adored watching her 😄 Feline patients can get very stressed in the veterinary environment. This is why we have a CAT CLINIC every Wednesday at Penkridge between 1-2pm. If you would like to call for your feline patient to be seen during this clinic please arrange an appointment in advance as these appointments do get booked up quickly. 🐱📞
Peggy 🥰 Just what you need to see on a Monday Morning ☀️ Peggy came in last month following concerns she had continued episodes of vomitting that had been ongoing for several days. She was eating but not as much or as fast either. She presented with abdominal tension and dehydrated which was indicative on her blood work too. She was admitted for diagnostic radiographs to ensure she hadn't eaten anything she shouldn't have. 🥳GOOD NEWS! There was no Foreign body but stayed with us overnight to correct her electrolyte inbalance and hydration. She started to eat and feel herself again and got discharged before Christmas too 😁
Dear Clients, Recent changes in government legislation are being introduced in December 2023. This has now put the American XL bully on the list of banned dogs in England and Wales. Therefore we advise for muzzle training to start as soon as possible. Please note: As a practice from 31st December please ensure when arriving for an appointment your XL Bully dog is muzzled, we are a public place, therefore we have to conform to the rules of the government. Here is a video put together to help all of our clients with muzzle training for all types of dogs. 🚨Our VCA Emma is available for free muzzle training sessions for all XL bully dogs. Please call if you need help 📞 we can arrange sessions for you 👍 We hope you enjoying watching 🙂
It's been a wonderful sunny day today 😎 ☀️ 🌡 Please consider our furry companions during this time 🐱🐶🐰 Please ensure there are water sources available 💦 Cooling aids with help too like fans, cool mats and cold towels placed on the floor (not placed over them). Please ensure they are kept in the shade ⛱️ Please ensure if they are travelling in the cars, keep the car cool to help them. As you can see here Bentley came for a visit today and enjoyed making the most of our small cooling pools. He loved it 😍 ⚠️Please ensure if you are providing your dogs with a water source like a pool, they are supervised at all times Hope your all enjoying the weather 😊
Morning folks!🌈 Starting your week off with another tear jerker!😭🥹 Remember we told you about the lovely Lacey last Monday? Well this is the moment she was reunited with her sister when she went home.❤ She's been in very frequently so we can monitor her aftercare so we are still seeing her gorgeous face. More stories and updates to follow... Have a lovely week.🐾
Good morning folks.🌈 Bit of a pull on the heart strings this morning.🥹 Over the last month we have had the beautiful Lacey in our care.💜 She had major surgery in January and some seriously intense aftercare ever since. Lacey has been one of our longest standing inpatients. She has stayed with us for 25 days and on Friday she got to go home.🥰 This is a win for our nursing team, who, quite frankly, have been absolutely phenomenal from start to finish with this case. Above and so far beyond.✨ The outstanding, intricate care given by everyone, alongside the incredible brains of some of our nurses, really has made all the difference.❤️ Lacey's treatment and support will continue for the rest of her life, and we'll show you more of her over the next coming weeks, but for now... Happy home day Lacey... and here's to our nurses!💚💚💚
💔Whilst Christmas can be the most wonderful time of the year, it can also be a stark reminder of the things we love that we’ve lost. We’d like to take a moment to say we are thinking of you all this Christmas for those who feel things just aren’t the same. Whether you have just sadly said goodbye to your pet or whether it was a long time ago, this time of year without them can be the hardest time of all. You are not alone.❤️ If you need somebody to talk to, Blue Cross provide a Pet Bereavement Support Service, available to all. https://www.bluecross.org.uk/pet-bereavement-and-pet-loss Remembering all those on Rainbow Bridge this Christmas.🌈💚
Birds🐦 We have had quite a few birds brought to the practice over the last few weeks, so we wanted to share some advice of the best course of action to help.🙂 Some of these birds have been fledglings. Fledglings have all or most of their feathers and leave the nest right before they can fly. It is extremely common for them to be on the ground. The best thing to do is keep your pets away from them, leave them alone but monitor. The parents are usually nearby and feeding. Bringing a healthy fledgling to the practice is counterproductive. ❓What to do if you find a wild animal that may be sick or injured?? 🐾The first port of call is always to ring the RSPCA on 0300 1234 999. 🐾Whilst we will provide emergency first aid for injured wildlife, unfortunately we do not have the specialist facilities or equipment to hospitalise and provide on-going treatment. Therefore, taking the animal to a specific rescue centre or wildlife rehabilitation centre is the best course of action. 🐾The RSPCA have 4 wildlife centres (one located in Cheshire!). They can provide specialist care for the rehabilitation of wildlife throughout England and Wales. From the RSPB website: ‘For most injured birds, place them gently in a box and keep them quiet, dark and cool. It may be that the bird is in shock and will soon recover so you can let it go. If it is more seriously injured, this will reduce stress on the bird until you can get advice on how you can help it.' For more information follow the link below. https://www.rspb.org.uk/birds-and-wildlife/advice/how-you-can-help-birds/injured-and-baby-birds/sick-and-injured-birds-faqs/#:~:text=For%20most%20injured%20birds%2C%20place,how%20you%20can%20help%20it. This healthy little guy was brought into us. One of our nurses Nicky is a keen wildlife advocate. She was able to help him the best she could until he can fly.❤
