WOWSERS. If Carlsberg did first days back…🍺

Our autumn term kicked off in old skool Young Rep fashion with one of the BEST classes we’ve seen for aaages! Page one of an exciting new chapter! 😎🤘

Our students experienced some workshop-style auditions for our adventure through the wardrobe this term… exploring some of the themes within C.S. Lewis’ novel and building some INCREDIBLE movement sequences around scenes from our script… There wasn’t a single student who didn’t stand out and say, “Look at me!” 💪

What an exiting term we have ahead!!

And we are so, SO excited to be heading back through the wardrobe this term as we venture to a land of winter and Turkish delight… it’s gonna be roarsome! ❄️

⚡️We’re not all that interested in playing it safe or doing what’s popular or commercially successful.

We like hidden treasure, unopened boxes of magic, unexplored worlds, dark secrets, discovering beauty in the most unexpected place. We like blank pages and canvasses. We like telling stories and we like creating new ways to share these stories with every young actor who walks through our doors.

Our Class of ‘22 open their A-Level results tomorrow, but with so many of our alumni already securing places at some of the top theatre and performing arts schools in the country for September, we know that our way of nurturing young talent is a road we’re more than happy to continue navigating - why fit in when you were born to stand out?⚡️

It’s been a whole week since DaY ONe of our 2024 summer acting workshops, THUNDERBOLTS AND LIGHTNING⚡️

Four jam-packed days of technique, strategy, script-work, sword-fight choreography, exploration, theme work and some mind-blowing creativity!

We gave the young actors some of our biggest challenges to date and barely had time to take a breath - but we managed to capture a handful of photos and clips to remember another INCREDIBLE summer of acting!⚡️

A HUUUUGE well done and thank you to the fantastic young actors who joined us this year… the workshops are always a gigantic stepping stone to a more confident and skilled chapter in their acting tuition, so we look forward to seeing what happens next for them!

We were treated to the gorgeous Maddie Shenton joining us in class at the weekend!

Maddie is a Class of ‘22 Young Rep graduate and has been busy auditioning for the top theatre schools in the country over the last few months as she prepares for the next chapter in her acting journey!

It was blummin’ awesome to have this mega-talented young actress back with us in class covering Nicci (whilst she was busy Punch & Judying in the Peak District!)
She gave our students a taste of how hard work, commitment and dedication to the art of acting can bring such great rewards post-graduation… How lucky we are to have such outstanding human beans in our alumni!

Today we say goodbye to one of our biggest supporters and cheerleaders, Malcolm Rushton.

From day one, Malcolm has supported, encouraged and celebrated Scarlet Theatre and The Young Rep Acting School.

Malcolm was always there when we needed pretty much anything theatre-related!

But so much more than just our ‘go/to’ man; he was a true gent who trusted in us and our vision.

He continually demonstrated kindness, generosity, fairness and neutrality at The Rep and we will miss one of the finest human beans, we were ever lucky enough to meet.

We will ALWAYS make you proud, Cap. 🏴‍☠️

Thank you for your magnificence and your abundance of juicy Shakespearean insults!

We went back to Renaissance England on Saturday and started work on our exploration of ‘Something Rotten’ in homage to The Bard 💪

🌍 HappY EaRtH DaY!

🌍 We use ethical and sustainable materials as much as we can and we always repurpose or up-cycle our props and scenery. For example:
A Narnia scythe got transformed into motorcycle handlebars for Bat Out Of Hell.
A collection of ‘Me Ol’ Bamboo’ garden canes got transformed into prison bars for Hansel and Gretel.
Rumpelstiltskin’s Spinning Wheel of Fortune got restyled into the Polar Express engine.
Foamboard signage and scenery always gets a facelift or covered for re-use and off-cuts are made into Mr Potato Head body parts!
We repurposed the cardboard inner tubes from rolls of fabric into a gingerbread house structure and wooden electric cable drums into toadstools.

And at the end of each production, we always have a good old think about what and how we could be better next time.

We always do our best to approach theatre making in a sustainable way in a bid to play our part in protecting the planet and the future of our talented young actors.

We are committed to producing work where the entire company is encouraged to work in a sustainable way.

From scenery and props to digital marketing and communication; take a look at how Scarlet Theatre and The Young Rep Acting School work together to improve the environmental sustainability of our productions and projects…

• We use minimal set and scenery and always use, repurpose and up cycle our existing inventory.

• Our costumes are continually recycled and reused and for each production. Costumes are laundered at 30 degrees or less and we use eco-friendly detergents.

• Any ‘new’ props and costumes that may be required are sourced from local charity shops and car boot sales.

• We use biodegradable confetti, snow and glitter wherever possible. And the snow in our biennial production of A Christmas Carol is reused after each performance to avoid excessive waste.

• We encourage our team of actors to carshare to and from rehearsals and performances, where possible.

• We always use digital communication and scripts.

• Our Home venue (The Rep Theatre, Stoke-on-Trent) recently installed more energy efficient working lights and equipment is switched off when it is not in use.

• We have a paperless ticketing system and predominantly use digital marketing.

• We use MOO for our flyer printing who have sustainability as one of their six brand values.

• Any props or costumes that we can no longer use are donated to local charities to be re-homed.

Happy 16th Birthday to our resident lizard, Liam! 🦖

This incredible young man started his journey at The Young Rep just a few months before we entered the infamous Covid era!
A timid and shy young actor walked in to the theatre one day and found himself surrounded by a team of other fantastic young men who took him under their wing and nurtured his confidence and growth.

Liam is one of our most well-loved characters at The Young Rep with an infectiously dry sense of humour 😏😂

He works hard EVERY SINGLE lesson and has TRANSFORMED into a confident young actor with a real strength in retaining the theoretical side to our acting programme.

Liam is a talented and gracious young actor who has played some superb roles in his time at The Young Rep, including The Mouse King in The Nutcracker, Havisham in Twisted and most recently Lou Lou-Who in Once Upon A Christmas (amongst many, MANY others!)

Liam is a very popular student at The Young Rep and we can’t wait to see where his next chapter takes him post-graduation!

Have a roarsome birthday, Liam! 🥳

Humongous thanks to our rock ‘n’ roll parents, guardians and family for joining us at the weekend for a morning in NYC🗽

The students have worked crazy hard during their skills term so we thought we’d throw open our doors for their families to come and see a SNiPpeT of what we get up to on a Saturday morning… including a taster starter activity which saw our parental figures stretching their own acting sea-legs!! 🫣 Stay tooned to see them in action… 😏😏

We had such a bodacious time back in the 80s for last year’s summer acting workshops, that we’ve decided to head back there to make the sequel! From the exotic adventures with the infinitely cool, bull-whip toting archaeologist, Indiana Jones, to a flying visit back to the year 2015 (Yes, 2015!) with Marty McFly, Doc Brown, a hoverboard and a retro DeLorean for Back To The Future Part II. We then head over to Hollywood and Toontown’s ACME Studios on a sleuthing mission to uncover Who Framed Roger Rabbit, take a trip in a phone booth-shaped time machine with Bill and Ted to help them pass their History exam… and all before a trek through the back garden for a terrifying face-off with a giant scorpion in, Honey, I Shrunk The Kids. Scarlet Theatre and The Young Rep Acting School are hugely proud and excited to be bringing to life some of the most incredible characters at The Rep Theatre, Stoke for another jam-packed acting experience this Summer.
