Did you know that dogs can donate blood? 🐕‍🦺🩸

Many ill or injured pets need blood transfusions, so it’s important that practices have access to a ready supply of blood on hand.

To become a blood donor (which is a simple procedure), dogs should meet the following criteria:

✅Aged over one but under 8 years old
✅ Weigh over 25 kilos
✅ Be fully vaccinated
✅ Not travelled abroad
✅ Not on medication

💛🤩🏆Maisie and her Bravery award 🏆🤩💛

We are starting a new tradition so Sundays will be story time for you all 🤓📚. Everyone meet this sweet little girl Maisie who will be 16 in July. She came into our Newcastle branch as she needed to have her right eye removed( in June 2023 )due to a corneal ulcer.

Corneal ulcer is a wound on the front of the eye which is very painful. Common causes are :

👁️Dry eye
👁️ Injury
👁️Eyelid or Eyelash problems
👁️Eye infection
👁️Breeds (such as Pug, Shih Tzu, Bulldog, Boxer, West Highland Terrier, Cavalier King Charles Spaniel)

Maisie then recovered and had to have a second eye operation to remove her left eye (in February 2024) after developing another corneal ulcer on that eye. She had several weeks of treatment to try and save the left eye but unfortunately despite our best efforts it couldn’t be saved. Steve (our head vet/practice manager ) did both operations and she was well looked after by all the team at Charters 💚.

Maisie came back in to our practice to have a bravery award 🥇 after she did so well recovering ❤️‍🩹 from her double eye enucleation , she has healed really well and has adapted so well to having no eyes. She’s finding her way around the house and the garden and can find her way back from the garden to the back door and climbs in by herself. Her sense of smell is amazing and she can smell toast from another room! 😁

Here is a few lovely words from her owners “Maisie is such a happy dog and is enjoying a quieter pace of life these days. We feel very lucky to have her and relieved that she has made such a good recovery from both operations.

As temperatures rise, so does the risk of flystrike for our fluffy companions. Flystrike, a potentially fatal condition, occurs when flies lay eggs on a rabbit's fur, which then hatch into maggots and feed on their flesh.

Prevention is key: ensure your rabbit's living space is clean and dry, and consider using flystrike prevention methods recommended by your vet.

As the sun starts to shine brighter, let's not forget
some of our pale skinned furry friends' skin
protection!

May 27th is Sunscreen Day, reminding us of the
importance of safeguarding those pet such as
white coated animals with pink skin from harmful
UV rays. Just like us, some pets can suffer from
sunburn and may occasionally lead to skin cancer.

Ensure your pet stays safe in the sun by limiting
access to direct sunlight during the hottest part of
the day. If tolerated and won’t be licked off, apply
pet-safe sunscreen to exposed areas. Also, provide
shady spots outdoors.

💚 Suturing simple wounds
💚 Removing uncomplicated lumps
💚 Taking samples like skin biopsies, scrapes, plucks, and needle samples to aid in veterinary diagnoses
💚 Performing dental hygiene procedures and dental radiographs

💚 Assisting owners in managing chronic conditions such as diabetes, renal disease, and obesity

As a registered veterinary nurse, specific medical procedures can be delegated to you by a veterinary surgeon under Schedule 3 of the Veterinary Surgeons Act.

As a registered veterinary nurse, certain medical procedures can be delegated to them by a veterinary surgeon under Schedule 3 of the Veterinary Surgeons Act. These procedures include:

💉 Administering animal medications through a needle and syringe, either into a muscle (intramuscular injection), vein (intravenous), or under the skin (subcutaneous injection). This can be done for pain relief, sedation, or other necessary treatments.

🩹 Cleaning and dressing wounds appropriately. If an animal has a wound, a veterinary nurse may provide proper care by cleaning it with an antiseptic solution and applying a sterile dressing to protect it from further contamination.

🤕 Removing sutures after an animal has had surgery or an injury requiring stitches. A Schedule 3 veterinary nurse may carefully cut the stitches and remove them from the skin, ensuring proper procedure to avoid further injury or complications.

Sadly a deceased cat had been handed into our Newcastle branch this morning. The cat is black and white castrated male with no collar and is chipped . He was found at redbull traffic lights in Kidsgrove.

Little Luke came in to the surgery for his routine castration which usually take between 10-15 minutes.
The castration procedure inlcudes :

🌟Cat's sc***um is shaved and scrubbed
🌟After which a single incision is made over each testicle, and they are removed.
🌟The spermatic cord is then tied off, and the cat is allowed to recover from anesthesia.
🌟They are then taken home to recover. The recovery time is normally 7-10 days ❤️‍🩹

This is 🩵Davey & Dexter🩵 they both came in to see one of our vets Tara for their annual booster vaccination 💉
An annual booster vaccination 💉for dogs includes cover against:

✅ Distemper
✅ Parvovirus
✅ Canine infectious hepatitis
✅ Leptospirosis.

All dogs 🐶 should have an annual booster vaccination 💉 to keep them fully protected. It is important to ensure that booster injections 💉are given each year and do not lapse, otherwise your dog may need to restart a full course to ensure they have adequate protection.
