⭐️ Laparoscopic Spey ⭐️

At the beginning of the week Lucy the cocker spaniel came in for a laparoscopic Spey and here is nurse Lucy with her just before she discharged her back to her owner.

Laparoscopic Spey is a surgical keyhole ovariectomy. Both ovaries are removed via two small key hole incisions.

The benefits of a laparoscopic Spey:
- Faster recovery time
- Easier recovery process for the patients
- Smaller surgical wound and no skin sutures meaning reduced risk of post operative complications
- Significant reduction in post operative pain, therefore will be more comfortable in a shorter period of time.

🌱 Grass seeds 🌱

Meet Maddie!

🐶 Maddie was on a walk around long grass this morning and then suddenly dropped down and started shaking her head. 🐶

Her owners phoned up and got her booked in. One of our vets, Holly, looked down her ears with an otoscope and saw some grass seed tips!
In the end Holly pulled out 6 grass seeds from her ears!

Once they were pulled out Maddie had an instant relief as grass seeds trapped are very painful!

———
Grass seeds have very sharp ends and although they can be small, if they become trapped in your dog’s coat, they can burrow down and pierce their skin and potentially migrate around the body. They can also get stuck in your dog’s paws, ears, eyes and/or nose. 🐾

‼️ It's a very good idea to check your dog's feet and ears for grass seeds after walks especially if you have walked through areas with long grass‼️

If you have any questions or you think your dog has a grass seed injury then please call reception ☎️ 01789 261471☎️ to get booked in🐾

🐶Puppy Alert🐶

At the Beginning of last week little Willow came in for her health check and first vaccine.

Whilst waiting in reception, she had lots of love and cuddles off Lucy 💖

Vaccinating your dogs is important to protect them from infectious diseases. The vaccines protect against: Distemper, hepatitis, parvovirus and leptospirosis.

It’s important to vaccinate your dogs and keep up with their annual vaccinations 🐾

‼️Tick Season ‼️

Tick season is upon us and we have seen an increasing number of ticks these past few weeks.

Ticks are parasitic arachnids. They latch on to the host (our furry friends) and bury their heads into the skin. They can appear in different colours; white, grey, brown and black. They are most commonly found in wooded areas and tall grasslands.

To safely remove a tick you will need to use a ‘tick twister’ but if you’re unsure then please ring reception for further help and advice, alternatively you can be booked in for a nurse consultation.

Tick bites can leave a small inflamed area, if this area seems to increase in size, seems painful, has any discharge or your pet seems unwell then please get in touch.

It is best to remove them immediately to reduce the chance of disease transmission, such as Lyme disease.

For any questions or advice please ring the team on ☎️ 01789 261471☎️

🐰Rabbit Awareness Week -Day 4🐰

Happy Day Four of Rabbit Awareness Week 2024! 🐰

Today, they’re diving into how you can create a thriving environment.

🏡 It’s important that your rabbit’s environment is spacious and clean.
It’s important to clean out your bunnies environment regularly to avoid issues, such as fly strike. 🪰

Flystrike is when flies lay eggs on your rabbit usually because the rabbits fur is wet and dirty (this can be from their bedding) and if they have faecal accumulation around their rear end. Flies can also strike if your rabbit has mobility issues and struggle move around. Once the flies land and lay their eggs, they hatch into maggots and then eat away at the skin and flesh- this can be fatal.

Please make sure you check your bunnies regularly but especially twice a day in the summer months.

Make sure their bedding is always clean and fresh and if they have long coats then it may be worth clipping the fur around their back end. If you struggle with this, then this can be done as a nurse consultation.

Any issues or questions, please ring reception on ☎️ 01789 261471☎️

🐰Rabbit awareness week - Day 3🐰

We hope everyone's enjoying Rabbit Awareness Week 2024 just as much as we are! 🐰

Today, they're diving deep into bunny behaviour.

A happy rabbit can show happiness through behaviour and body language-

•Lying down, with a relaxed body posture and legs tucked under the body.

•Lying down, with front paws pointing forward and rear legs stuck out sideways. The body is relaxed and extended.

• Lying down with a fully extended, relaxed body. Back legs are stretched out behind the body and the front paws are pointing forward.

-Jumping into the air with all four paws off the ground and twists in mid-air before landing.

Learn how to nurture positive habits and recognise the signs when something might be off.
Your furry friend counts on you to understand their needs, so let's hop to it!

⭐️ Thank You⭐️

Last week we had a fosterer and volunteer, Sandra, come to collect the charity donations and delivered them to Many Tears Animal Rescue.

Many tears is an animal charity based in Carmarthenshire, Wales. They take in and rehome primarily ex-breeding dogs who are no longer required; those on "death row" in the pounds and those whose owners are no longer able to keep them. The rescue has grown considerably since it first opened and now homes in excess of 3,000 dogs a year. 🐶

We filled Sandra’s 4x4 completely full with beds, bedding, blankets, towels, puppy items, food, a stroller for older dogs, and unwanted dog toys! 🚘

These donations will go a very long way and they will be very much appreciated by the charity and for the future animals they come across🐾

Thank you on behalf of Team Ark and Many tears to all our wonderful clients who donated and continue to donate! 💙

The British Veterinary Nursing Association started the campaign to celebrate, appreciate and bring more awareness about veterinary nurses and this year will mark 20 years since the campaign began! From its early beginnings as Veterinary Nursing Awareness Day from 2004, and since 2012 they’ve been campaigning for the whole month.

Below is our wonderful team of nurses here at The Ark.
🩺 From left to right we have: Ruth, Lucy and Lauren (head nurse) as our registered veterinary nurses and then Abbie and Sally as our student nurses 🩺

🐾 Attention all cat owners in England! 🐱

Don't forget, the deadline for microchipping your feline friend is quickly approaching. Starting from June 10th, it's a legal requirement for ALL CATS in England to be microchipped and registered on a database by the time they're 20 weeks old.

Remember, failing to comply could result in a hefty fine of up to £500! But fear not,
microchipping your cat doesn't have to break the bank - it's a small price to pay for peace of mind and compliance with the law. 📒

Don't wait until it's too late! Contact our team today to schedule a microchipping appointment for your furry friend and ensure they're protected and legal.
