We often get asked, at what stage/ age do we stop giving treats?
Well, WHY do we need to stop giving treats? Think of it this way, if you think of treats as payment for your dog’s hard work, is your dog going to keep working for you if they stop getting paid?
Imagine this, you’ve started a new job, you’ve now been there a few months, fully trained, settled in to the team and things are going well. Now, your boss says to you they aren’t going to pay you any more because you’re doing your job well. Are you going to keep working for them? I thought not.
We can change the rate of reinforcement to help them to work a bit harder, sometimes they might get a small biscuit, sometimes they might get a fuss, sometimes they might get a game of tuggy and sometimes they might get a bonus of a sausage! This means they never quite know when they’re going to win big!
This dog in the video is 11, and will continue to be ‘paid’ for his hard work forever.
Not only do our classes provide you with information on how to teach your dogs life skills. They also are FUN and you can become a part of a community who support each other. We love to play games when we can, and put in to practice the skills we have learnt.
Here are one of Monday night classes, playing egg and spoon races, whilst practicing their loose lead. All chaos can break out if your dog decides to pull during this, because the egg (ball) will go flying! This game is a favourite amongst our team. 😂😂
