As a police dog handler, instructor, public order dog instructor and police dog commander for over 100 PSU deployments that included many football matches with violent crowds, extremist marches and mutual aid for other police forces for public order incidents around the country I can tell you that I’ve never seen public order dogs muzzled like this in this sort of situation.
There is a very outdated tactic that is incredibly rarely used where dogs could be deployed to a passive crowd. In that tactic dogs are told to be put in the down position and are to remain calm. I have only seen one training video of a real life situation where it was used and it did not make for comfortable viewing and I made it clear that I would never use it.
There is no tactic available to use dogs wearing muzzles to ‘muzzle punch’ people in the police handbook!
This is not a passive crowd! This is not a picnic. This is not a cute and fluffy public engagement day, of which I have been to many. This is a public order incident with an aggressive and hostile crowd who went on to riot.
As the dog commander it is your role to tell the bronze or silver commander what your teams capabilities are and what you and your team are prepared to do. You can say no. I have said no much higher ranking commanders to tactics and decisions many times before. I’d give my input and suggest a much more suitable and achievable tactic. I am the subject expert in that situation not them. As a dog commander on the ground you have a much higher position than your police Constable rank might suggest. You can tell everyone up to silver and potentially gold command what you are going to do or not going to do.
Never had I ever been asked to muzzle my teams dogs and place them in front of a crowd. If I had been asked I would have refused.
If the crowd is that passive then the situation doesn’t need police dogs - that crowd wasn’t passive.
If the crowd is active, reactive, hostile, violent and it’s deemed that dogs are needed then they shouldn’t be muzzled!
Let me just reiterate, there is currently no police dog tactic in the police dog manual that allows for police dogs to ‘muzzle punch’ people!

So I got a new toy today! Hmmmm 👀 I'm not sure what to do with it yet, but it definitely looks like something I can play with to wake the humans up while they are sleeping 😁

After my lonnnggg day on Monday at the vets, I decided I wanted to sit back in the carrier to go back. This time we didn't go back though, my human said to me why do you want to go in it now but not on the day when we actually had to put you in it?

I have had such a busy day already. I had to go to this place called the "vets" again 🤔 I was a brave boy in the car I got a bit scared when I was in the waiting room but I was ok. The man that gave me a health check and my injection he let me smell all his equipment before he used it which I enjoyed doing ☺️ he then got this big stick and poked me with it 🤔 but I was very brave and got treats after I got home. What a day! 🐾🐾🐾🐾🐈🐈🐈🐈🐈

We hope you all have had a good start to 2024, has anyone got any new year's resolution? Mine is to never let my humans get rid of my favourite box 🐾🐾

On another note, I'm not sure if I introduced our kitten we have had for a while, this is Lola, she's our latest resident we adopted, she's had a bad start to her little life, but we have shown her what real love is. 🥰 Isn't she pretty.🥰
