To travel with your pet to an EU country or Northern Ireland, there are some requirements your pet will need before you travel. You will be required to obtain an Animal Health Certificate (AHC) for them, an AHC needs to be issued by an Official Veterinarian (OV).
We would recommend that you start the process at least four months before your journey.

Our pets are part of the family and we want to share fun experiences with them – including taking them on holiday!
While this often results in great fun and wonderful memories, there are a few things to consider first. A bit of planning beforehand goes a long way towards making it a positive experience for everyone.

Heat stress starts as a reversible condition, but if not managed it will develop to heat stroke, which is extremely dangerous.
Unlike us, pets have no understanding that hot weather can be harmful. We control their environment, their access to water and their exercise, and they can’t speak up if they start feeling unwell.

Sunny Stelly enjoying the rays! ☀️

Just look at those pearly whites too, for an older gal her teeth are great, as her human makes sure she brushes them, and she has regular dentals! 😁

Remember you get fixed price dentals when you are part of our Healthy Pet Club 🦷

We would like to congratulate one of our vets Victoria, who has recently finished five years of additional study and case logs, and been awarded ‘Advanced Practitioner’ status by the RCVS in the field of Diagnostic Imaging. This means she is able to accept referrals from other veterinary practices, for patients who require abdominal ultrasounds, echocardiographs or radiographs. These are performed at our Lisieux Way branch.

There are 50 advanced practitioners in diagnostic imaging in the UK.

What is an advanced practitioner:

‘Advanced Practitioner’ status is an official recognition of a veterinary surgeon’s particular knowledge and skills in a designated field of veterinary practice. Those on the list hold a postgraduate qualification in their designated area of interest, in addition to their initial veterinary degree, and have also demonstrated that they are keeping up to date with their knowledge and competence in their chosen area. RCVS Advanced Practitioners are not specialists, but accreditation as an Advanced Practitioner provides the public with additional assurances that the individual has undertaken further study and ongoing professional development in a particular area of clinical practice.

Well done Victoria! We are lucky to have you. 👏👏👏

It isn't just your pets we care for, we also get copious amounts of wildlife brought into us! 🦆🦉🦔🐿🐦‍⬛🦡🦢

Whilst we are happy to take a look at wildlife and do what we can if they are injured. The best thing to do if you find any wildlife needing assistance, would be to contact West Hatch Wildlife Centre or Secret World Wildlife Rescue directly for advice. These rescues have specific experts in the field who can assess, and hopefully recover & rehabilitate everything from birds to foxes, to badgers and hedgehogs.

Here is 'Jason Crowmoa' - a crow fledgling who fell out a nest and came away from the nest location, he was not quite ready to fend for himself, due to the lack of flight feathers. One of our team took Jason out to West Hatch Wildlife Centre to be rehabilitated back into the wild 😊

🪰Flystrike🪰

Flystrike happens more often in warm weather, and in rabbits who have soiled fur (often due to poor diet, obesity or arthritis).

Throughout the spring and summer rabbits must be checked twice daily and any soiled fur cleaned. If you find any sign of fly eggs or maggots you must arrange for your rabbit to see a vet as soon as possible.

💉Microchipping💉

Microchipping rabbits is not a legal requirement but is strongly recommended. Rabbits are excellent escape artists and, if they manage to escape the garden, it can be difficult to identify where they have come from.

🦷Dental Disease🦷

Since you cannot check your rabbit’s teeth at home, it is important to look out for signs of dental disease.

There are many things that you can look out for that might indicate that your rabbit has some sort of dental health issue. If you notice any of these signs, it is important that you bring your rabbit to your vet for an oral assessment as soon as possible. Stopping eating altogether is an emergency.

👩‍⚕️Neutering👨‍⚕️

Neutering means removing the reproductive organs; this is either the ovaries in females (known as spaying) or the testicles in males (known as castration). Neutering is a
routine procedure that does not require overnight hospitalisation, with an average recovery time of 5-10 days.

🐰THIS WEEK IS RABBIT AWARENESS WEEK!🐰
We will be sharing tips and advice for you and your long eared friend.

💉Vaccinations💉

Both indoor and outdoor rabbits require vaccinations to keep them safe from infectious disease. Young rabbits are particularly vulnerable to serious illnesses, so it’s important to get them vaccinated early.

Rabbits can be vaccinated from five weeks old and will need yearly booster vaccinations throughout their life to maintain immunity.

Another happy ending... 🥰

This lovely girl Minstrel had been missing from The Castle Green Hotel for a number of months, you may even recognise her as she was all over Facebook for months, with the owners doing their best to try and find her. Naturally the owners, the staff at Castle Green and their regular clients were beside themselves, as they did not know if she had wandered, was taken, or worse.

Thankfully someone handed her into us yesterday, and as the microchip details were kept up-to-date by the owner, we were able to reunite them back together again! 😍👏

Please remember that it is now a legal requirement for cats to be microchipped. If your cat(s) are already chipped, please make sure your details are kept up-to-date.
