THE GIFT OF THE GROWL
Why growling should never be punished and also never be ignored
Not all growls are negative. Some growls are play growls, attention seeking growls, pleasure seeking growls or frustration growls. They may all sound a little different and may be unique to the particular dog. This post is not about different types of growls, but about warning or aggressive growls.
When a dog growls, maybe even at us, the natural human response is to feel offended and maybe even angry. Surely dogs need to learn not to growl, growling is bad, growling is unacceptable, growling is a problem and needs to be punished so a dog learns itโ€™s wrong, disrespectful and not to do it again, right?
NO, this couldnโ€™t be further from the truth! A dog that growls has just provided us with a very valuable communication signal. In their way, they have just communicated to us how they feel without resorting to a bite. Dogs use growling in an attempt to avoid having to resort to biting, not to initiate it. They could just as easily have not even bothered to growl and gone straight to a bite.
Growling is a dog's way of saying "please stop," "stay away from me," "go away," โ€œIโ€™m not comfortable with this and Iโ€™m feeling threatenedโ€. A dog that growls is trying hard to communicate and punishment suppresses this ability to communicate. Punishment doesnโ€™t change the level of the dog's discomfort; it creates more stress and the dog will feel more threatened.
Growling is not the problem. Growling is the result of and the symptom of a problem. A dog that bites without the warning of a growl is a far more serious problem than a dog that growls but doesnโ€™t bite.
Look for any other early warning signals that may precede a growl. Recognize and take note of what makes your dog feel threatened and create distance between your dog and whatever is triggering them.
Be grateful for the gift of a growl - it provides us with an opportunity to address the cause & prevent the bite.

Reggie's big adventure.....

Our second job yesterday, was Reggie, the beautiful Staffie puppy.

Our collection was slightly delayed due to our escapades with Badger but nevertheless we arrived within the timescale given....just!

On leaving Wokingham Reggie settled in for a nice relaxing drive to deepest darkest Cornwall. We stopped at Cullompton to give him a rest stop, a drink and of course the all important cuddles. ๐Ÿคฃ

On approaching Exeter there must have been a couple of tunes on the radio he liked as he started singing along to them (more practice needed Reggie, you sounded like the wife singing along to Abba ๐Ÿคฃ).

After snuggling back down we plodded on and only an hour from his new home we got caught in traffic on the A30 due to an accident. Fearing we would be a while we set up the front seat carrier and brought Reggie out to show him what was happening. He found the Air ambulance really interesting. ๐Ÿš The result was being turned around and a two hour delay.

Arriving at his new home, mun and dad eagerly awaiting by torch light, we had to wake up Reggie to meet his new family ๐Ÿพ a party awaited ๐ŸŽ‰๐ŸŽ‚

Apparently he had a good first night and is settling in well ๐Ÿ‘

Good luck Reggie, regular pupdates please ๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿพ

Today we had an interesting time with Badger to say the least!

He traveled well from Bridport to Swindon but this boy has a few issues and although he looks cuddly in the pictures it took over an hour to gain his trust enough to unload him from the van.

Thank you to Joy at The Birkett-Smith Animal Sanctuary for all of your assistance today, we couldn't have done it without you!

Good luck Badger ๐Ÿพ๐Ÿ•

- Appeal for witnesses following burglary in Bournemouth

Officers investigating a burglary where puppies were stolen from an address in Bournemouth are appealing for witnesses or anyone with information to come forward.

At approximately 4.20am on Tuesday 24 May 2022 entry was gained to a property in the Charminster Road area and nine young American Bulldog puppies were stolen from inside the address.

It is reported that the victim heard male voices, however by the time they got downstairs the offenders had left the address.

Police Sergeant Sarah Hodgson, of Dorset Police, said: โ€œAn investigation is underway to identify the offenders and locate the stolen puppies.

โ€œI am appealing to anyone who saw or heard any suspicious activity in Charminster Road in the early hours of Tuesday 24 May to please get in touch.

โ€œI would urge anyone who may have seen the puppies for sale locally in unusual circumstances, or has any information about their whereabouts, to urgently contact Dorset Police. I am also issuing an image of the puppies in the hope someone may recognise them.

โ€œFinally, I am keen to hear from any residents or motorists who may have captured any CCTV or dashcam footage around the relevant timeframe that may help our enquiries.โ€

Anyone with information is asked to contact Dorset Police at www.dorset.police.uk/contact, via email [email protected] or by calling 101, quoting occurrence number 55220082249. Alternatively, independent charity Crimestoppers can be contacted anonymously online at Crimestoppers-uk.org or by calling Freephone 0800 555 111.

What a challenging day!
We drove right across the country to the Isle of Sheppey in terrible rain, got soaked whilst loading and battled Friday afternoon traffic and major delays to get back to Tavistock.
However it was all worth it to bring the wonderful Minnie to her new forever home. ๐Ÿพ
Hopefully, as you are local to us, we will see you around and watch you grow up!

This afternoon we met up with Homeward Bound Animal Transportation to collect the lovely Marley on his penultimate leg of his journey to a new life all the way from Spain.
We took him to Sally's cat rescue in St Austell. Yes, we know he's not a cat!! ๐Ÿˆ They re-home dogs too.
Believe it or not, Marley is only a puppy and was really excited to meet all these new people, let's hope he learns English quickly. ๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿ•๐Ÿพ

Just arrived back home after transporting the lovely Marcus.
