Thirsk Birds of Prey Centre was set up to ensure that birds of prey would survive to provide our guests with a rare opportunity to see and enjoy these beautiful birds. To also learn about the conservation work the centre does world wide to help declining species in the wild and how you can all help these amazing birds of prey. Opening and Flying Display Times:

We have daily displays at 11:30am and 1:30pm (March and October)
11:30am, 1:30pm & 3:30pm (1st April to the 30th September)

Entrance fees
Adults: £9.00 (16 years and up)
OAP: £8.00 (65 years and over)
Children: £7.00 (children under 3 years go FREE)

Do you remember what you did last year? Johnny Rooks do! These birds remembered how to solve our puzzle box after a full year had passed without seeing it or practicing. They used the same methods and were twice as fast as birds trying for the first time. Johnny Rooks can learn and remember new skills without being reminded how for over a year. Impressive! Congrats to my colleagues at Vetmeduni for our newest publication in Current Biology, and thanks to Saunders Island for hosting our research!

⭐️ An interesting day! Today we met Graeme Hall (The Dog Father) and his partner Nikki. We got to spend the morning flying birds, having a good giggle and swopping tales regarding birds, horses and dogs.

Graeme also kindly gave a few pointers to help Dave and Kerry with their naughty doggy’s!

We have limited spaces available for this once in a lifetime experience and we don’t expect them to be around for long.

We only offer this unique and special experience in November. The centre will be closed to the public, this means that all focus and attention is given to you and our small VIP group throughout the day.

This eagle experience includes flying and handling some of the smallest and heaviest species of eagles in the world also some of the most powerful and iconic species. We also have a new species joining the flying team this year.

You will have the chance to take close-up pictures and will also be able to admire the true beauty of these magnificent predators. 📸

If this wasn’t enough, we then situate the group looking over our beautiful valley and the River Wiske, where we then conclude the days flying with our “Eagle Valley Flight”. This gives you the opportunity to watch one of our eagles soar high above the valley before stooping swiftly to your gloved hand, making a truly unforgettable moment.

Tea and Coffee is provided throughout the day plus a little warm lunch of soup, bread rolls and cake.☕🍰

This ultimate VIP eagle experience involves 10 or more eagles including the magnificent Stellers Sea Eagle, Golden Eagle, African Fish Eagle, White Tailed Eagles and so many more. 🦅

📅Today was the last official day of the African Adventure Display.☀

Our summer highlight show ran from 6th July till 12th September. Due to the weather, we sadly couldn’t fly the full show 5 times due to the severe weather conditions we had on the day but otherwise the birds gave us their all each day we put on the show and how amazing did they do! From the elegant White Storks, the majestic African Fish Eagle and the mesmerising Kites, we cannot say which bit was the highlight of the show. 🦅🦩

We were so pleased to hear so many positive comments, feedback and reviews about the African Adventure Display. Thank you to the kind people that would stop the staff to thank them and to express how amazed they were by the show. It makes all the late nights, training after hours and a little bit of stress all worth it to know you enjoyed it.🥳

Let’s hope there will be another African Adventure Display next year??

Not to worry we have a new show for our autumn flying timetable. Myths, Music and Legends flying display will be starting 1st October at 11:30am. It will be the main display of the day. 🕸🎼

🦴Thank you to everyone that joined us on Saturday 7th for International Vulture Awareness Day. 🦴

It was not the bright sunny day we were hoping for, but we still had a brilliant day and a great turn out.

Even Mark, one of our brilliant bird vets made a sneaky appearance and got to meet one of our Hooded Vultures and Ian the Impala.

We will let you know how much has been raised by you all over the summer and on IVAD. 🪙

We will be purchasing emergency poison response kits from The Hawk Conservancy Trust and we will be making a donation to the Horstmann Trust.🩺💊

Join us as we give you a glimpse of the Savannah. This show will take you into a world of survival, resilience but most of all life! Hosting up to 25 spectacular African birds including the elegant White Storks, speedy Lanner Falcon, majestic African Fish Eagle and not forgetting our White Headed Vulture with a wingspan of nearly 8ft. Watch these amazing birds show you their natural behaviour as they swoop, stoop and dive almost within touching distance of our audience. This exciting display blends music and theatre to bring a true message of conservation and how we can help conserve some of our most threatened species in the world.🌍🇿🇦

💚Our atmospheric grand finale is sure to raise the hair on the back of your neck or even bring a tear to your eye.

It’s not every day you get professional axe throwers visiting us from Canada. These lovely three are in Thirsk for the World double-bit axe throwing championships UK 2024 starting tomorrow! Wind warning for Tuesday 20th - Thursday 22nd August.

Our daily summer flying timetable may be disrupted due to the tail end of Hurricane Ernesto hitting the UK.

Tuesday and Thursday we are expecting 43mph winds.

Please note we will try and do what we can but our priority is always the safety and welfare of our birds and visitors. Displays may be reduced or canceled.

All being well we will be back to our usual flying timetable on Friday 21st.

Peter Wright from The Yorkshire Vet and his lovely wife Lin kindly dropped off some of Peters very popular books and watched the 3:30pm flying display and also met Miguel our Spectacled Owl. It is always a pleasure to have a good catch up with Peter and Lin. Peter has also kindly signed his books so make sure you pick up a copy on your next visit 📚

A little Kestrel was handed in by a member of the public a few weeks ago. We rushed the little Kestrel to Battleflats Vets at Stamford Bridge, it was assessed and then sent to Jean at Ryedale Rehab centre. So pleased it’s now back where it should be! 🦉Owl Experience Spaces Available - Tuesday 13th August 🦉

The experience starts at 10.30am. You will handle or fly 9 of our beautiful owls from our large collection. We will start your experience with an up-close encounter handling 5 magnificent owls, this gives you the opportunity to ask as many questions you would like and to take memorable photos while getting a closer look at these majestic birds.

We will take a short break for the 11.30am flying display. Following this, we recommence with flying 4 different species of owl from around the world.
After the experience you are welcome to watch the daily flying displays and explore the centre at your leisure.

The day begins at 10.30am and finishes at approximately 1.15pm. The bird staff will be on hand to ensure you have an enjoyable and special day at the Centre and an experience you will never forget.

📆Just a reminder that the centre will be closed on Saturday 29th and Sunday 30th June as advertised on our website. This is to allow staff to attend the Falconry and Raptor Fair at Helmsley.

Our Story

The Birds of Prey Centre at Sion Hill Hall, near Thirsk, was set up to ensure that birds of prey would survive to provide the public with a rare opportunity to see and enjoy these beautiful birds. Opening and Flying Display Times The Centre is open 7 days a week from the 1st of March to the 31st of October. 10.30am - 5.00pm. We have three displays a day at 11:30, 13:30 and 15:30 with different birds in each display including a chance to handle some of our smaller birds after the display!

(Displays are weather permitting) Entrance fees Adults: £8.00 (16yrs+) OAP: £7.00 Children: £6.00 (children under 3 years go FREE) Family tickets: £24.00 ( 2 adults + 2 Children or 1 adult + 3 children ) Adult groups (10+): £7.00 per person School Group discounts available
