The wobble cusion is a great piece of equipment to target a dogs balance, strength and proprioception
The exercise can be adapted to varied difficulties, making it great to help with a lot of conditions
In this video, Ozzy was completing this exercise for his IVDD rehabilitation, targeting his limb strength, core muscles, balance and proprioception, all of which he massively improved throughout his recovery💪
Collie smiles 😍 this lovely boy had an assessment, focussing on his shoulder as he’s recently showed signs of discomfort in the area, as well as uneven weight bearing of the front legs🐾
He had some red light therapy, as well as a compressive massage to relive the knots down his back, with some exercises prescribed to help with weight bearing and muscle build up🐾
Veterinary physiotherapy assessments involve observing the patient statically and dynamically, as well as palpating the joints, muscles and soft tissues on the patient, so can help to identify areas of pain, discomfort, asymmetry and/or increased/decreased muscle tone, and we treat accordingly, to help each individual animal🐾

We’re working on getting a consistent square sit, which will also help engage the hindlimb muscles correctly, and increase their strength when she transitions into a stand, as well as doing some massage to reduce tension in the areas where she’s been compensating🐶🐾

Meet Max, who underwent some physiotherapy, following his IVDD surgery
Due to spinal cord compression, Max required moderate support to help him stand, walk and balance, following his surgery. His left leg was weaker, which knuckled quite a lot
Fast forward, Max is now able to use both legs equally, can walk unassisted, and is back to being a playful happy boy!
Physiotherapy can benefit dogs following spinal surgery, alongside their rest period, to regain feeling and movement in their effected limbs, as well as working on strength, coordination, proprioception and balance, to achieve the most successful outcomes!

Tyson🐶This lovely boy was diagnosed with suspected IVDD a few months ago
No surgery was required; he was managed conservatively. He was advised to have strict crate rest for 6 weeks, with physiotherapy beginning after, to regain strength in his legs and to maintain the condition of his back
His dedicated owners have also took onboard all the home management advice by placing mats around the house to reduce slipping, limiting the interactions Tyson had with other dogs in their house and by gradually introducing walks back into his routine! He is now back to his normal exercise durations and is progressing amazingly!🐶

This is Diva De Vassy, who has been having physiotherapy to maintain her health and fitness, in addition to preparing her for schooling livery. I love treating Diva she’s got such a personality! Todays physio focused on her hind legs as well as reliving her back tightness🐴

This lovely boy had lymphangitis in his front leg, which is an infection causing his lymphatic vessels to swell, leading to pain and severe lameness

So little Harvey crossed the rainbow bridge this morning 😢 I’m posting about it on here because Harvey was a massive part of my journey becoming a vet physio.
Harvey came to many lectures and practicals with me right up until my last day, he was used in 3 of my exams (including my finals), he was known and loved by a lot of the class and by many lecturers too (with most people finding his chilled attitude his most desirable trait🤣)
I genuinely wouldn’t have been able to do my physio practice without him, his laid back nature meant he’d trust me to do anything and I can’t thank him enough 💔

𝗜𝗳 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗼𝘄𝗻 𝗮 𝗙𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗡𝗘𝗘𝗗 𝘁𝗼 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀
I am not exaggerating, this is information that can save your dog's life and prevent unnecessary suffering.
IVDD. Do you know what this is? French Bulldogs are at high risk for it, so I am about to tell you what 𝙨𝙮𝙢𝙥𝙩𝙤𝙢𝙨 to look for and what important steps need to be taken immediately.
IVDD stands for intervertebral disc disease. This is thought to be genetically ‘fixed’ in the breed, meaning the majority of Frenchies will have IVDD. Disc disease leads to a premature calcification of the discs that are sitting in between your dogs vertebrae. You can picture them as a cushion in between spinal bones. When they calcify they become brittle and are at risk of rupture. This is called disc herniation or a slipped disc. Often when this happens the dog is referred to as having IVDD, even though IVDD is technically the calcification and not the herniation.
But because often IVDD is used in the sense of herniation, the term will be used as such in this post as well.
Unfortunately polls have shown that many owners were completely unaware of IVDD and how to spot its symptoms. And even worse, many veterinarians are not trained or educated enough on IVDD and thus misdiagnose or don’t treat it as the emergency that it is.
Here are the 𝙨𝙮𝙢𝙥𝙩𝙤𝙢𝙨 any Frenchie owner needs to familiarize themself with and act immediately:
- Trembling
- Unwillingness to walk and/or unstable walk
- Difficulties sitting or laying down
- Panting
- Hunched back
- Holding neck low
- Crying when being picked up
- Dragging or paralysis
- While it can happen any time often dogs are 2-4 years of age
If your dog is experiencing any or multiple symptoms listed above, you need to act immediately. IVDD is not only extremely painful but also very time sensitive. I’ll get to why in a moment.
Crate your dog right away, limit all movement, do NOT encourage them to walk, get them to your vet or an emergency vet right away and tell them you suspect IVDD. For proper diagnosis your dog will need an MRI or CT and a neurology consultation. However, you generally need a referral which your regular vet can get started.
By now you might be wondering what the treatment is. This depends on the Grade of IVDD your dog is experiencing.
Grade 1 and 2 require strict crate rest for up to 6 weeks, pain management with medication. Grade 3,4,5 require surgery. Again, this is time sensitive. A dog can get worse and start out on a lower grade which escalates into a higher grade. Especially if treatment/management isn’t followed.
Once your dog has become plegic, meaning they cannot stand nor walk, time is ticking. If surgery is performed while they could still ‘feel’ their toes (deep pain sensation) prognosis is 85%- 90%. If by the time surgery is performed they have lost all feeling in their hind, prognosis is 50% if surgery is done within 24 hours of onset, down to 6%-30% if performed once 48 hours or more have elapsed.
Unfortunately there is a fatal complication called Myelomalacia that develops in up to 30% of Frenchies with IVDD (especially higher grades). Myelomalacia is the necrosis (deat*h) of the spinal cord. There is no treatment and euthanasia is recommended before the necrosis reaches the diaphragm which would lead to the dog suffocating.
IVDD is an absolutely heart breaking and horrible disease but sadly many Frenchie owners will experience it at some point.

I would also like remind everyone to either have insurance or access to a substantial amount of money as IVDD diagnosis, treatment and surgeries usually range between $6000-$12,000 +
Because of how painful and time sensitive this condition is, there is no time to crowd fund and frankly some owners have no choice than to surrender or euthanize their dog.
This post is not there to scare you. But on more than one occasion I had reached out to an owner after their dog had been misdiagnosed and I was the one who told them about IVDD and pointed them in the right direction. There is a lack of awareness of IVDD so I truly hope this reaches many Frenchie owners who are now aware of this condition and know what to do if it affects your dog. I hope from the bottom of my heart, you don’t have to experience it.

🐶canine stretches🐶 I spent this morning practicing stretches on (a very chilled) Harvey🐶 Stretches maintain/improve muscle flexibility, strength and health, decreasing stiffness and improving joint range of motion as a result🐶 Here, I performed forelimb protraction and retraction🐶
