Next episode of "The new calf shed". It would have been ideal just to gradually fill with newborns. You the get a very healthy honeymoon period of new calves in a new shed , however no choice. Cross calves all in separate hutches and sold at 7-10 days.
Pleural Effusion, consolidation of entire lung lobe
Here we have the cranial lobe of the right lung, the heart is beating behind it. You can see the entire lung lobe is consolidated and there is a significant degree of pleural effusion. This is severe with a poor prognosis even with treatment. Drop any comments or Questions below 👇
(thanks to Carolina Tejero for the video)
Next calf shed update. Plenty of ventilation xtra high tunnel. Would have preferred single pens to be in the group pen and then removed washed and moved to next pen. Avoid choke points of single pens always in same place.
Cshed skeleton
Hopefully when your client decides to build some additional calf accommodation they ask you first. If they dont be sure to "stick your nose in" as you will have to deal with its success or failure.
Over the next couple of weeks we will follow this one through from the bare bones we see here to stocked and outcomes. What was my first success ? Convincing the client to use a concrete floor rather than the much cheaper crushed rock alternative. Why am I so keen on concrete when I should be saving the planet?
Been a while,Have you missed us?, but back again with a scan R side 24 day old hfx heifer. Treated 3 days ago AB&NSAI. Farmer cannot understand why its not improving. Suspect missed seeing it ill for a couple of days. Will it ever get better?

The naughty elf knows all the shortcuts!!!
The naughty elf came down from the shelf to help out in the calf shed again this Christmas 🎄
Short video today. A trick to make them easier to watch is on your media player is to reduce the frame rate. Its an option down on the right. Slowing it down makes any scan easier to interpret or demonstrate to others. This one I need some help with. We are scanning on the right side caudal to the heart. You can see the heart to the right of the picture. To the left looks like complete lobular consolidation and I am not sure but it looks like the remnants of the bronchial tree. All inputs welcomed. As for the cliical picture, the calf showed a bit of increased resp. rate no cough.
Lung scan right side 8 week old FXH heifer. Spontaneous cough NAD.
Right side cranial to the heart apical lobes
2 secs in consolidation
8 secs fluid centre to consolidation
16 secs fluid not visible still marked consolidation
19 secs pleural line broken B lines
23 secs occasional B lines more consolidation
25 secs caudal heart B lines
35 secs large area of diffuse consolidation
Naso Pharyngeal swab taken at the time showed typical BRD picture. A little bit of everything. But no one predominat agent. Likely more chronic case. When did it start and what did it start with?
Ian was one of the many enthusiastic paticipants at the lung ultrasound workshop at BCVA Congress
Ian attended the lung scanning workshop at BCVA Congress. He was so keen to keep up the momentum he started scanning calves on Tuesday. He was kind enought to share a video. The positioning is right apical lobe i.e. cranial to the heart. We are looking at consolidation of the whole lobe , no A lines present. Well done Ian Academy Vets Stranraer.
Been helping out at Thirsk Veterinary Centre for a few weeks. Met lots of great people and although mainly small animals lots of transferable skills. A. Short video explaining sedative darting from Matt @matt_thevet
A right of passage for every EMS student. Well done Ellie Stanley.
I usually rely on my trusty milk carton with a few holes in the lid to dispense the iso propyl alcahol. However, when you have a lot to do the squirt guns make it all go faster. There will alway be a spare one at the back of the shelf in the practice.
EMS teaching
Another day another EMS teaching day. Ellie from Glasgow vet school picked up TUS very quickly. Always a joy to teach others
