It’s Day 4 of Rabbit Awareness Week 2024

Just like us, rabbits benefit from routine health care! 🐇✨

We love to see your rabbits for regular health checks with our Silver Standard Rabbit Friendly Veterinary Nurses and believe these are an essential part of keeping them happy and healthy.

This includes advice on annual vaccinations, neutering and bonding, parasite checks, making sure their teeth and nails are in tip top condition, grooming sessions to keep their skin and fur in order and weight/diet and husbandry advice.

During the warmer summer months, it’s crucial to keep their living area scrupulously clean, to prevent flies being attracted to it. Have a thorough look at your rabbits twice a day, to catch any early signs of sore skin or fly strike.
If in any doubt, please phone your vet for urgent advice.

Day 3 Rabbit Awareness Week 2024

With the hot weather we are experiencing, it has to be heat awareness today!🥵🥵🥵

☀️Prevention is always better than cure☀️

✅ Provide shade, breeze and ventilation
✅ Provide plentiful clean, fresh, cold water ✅Remember to give bowls not just bottles too
✅ Offer cold ceramic tiles, frozen water bottles etc for them to rest on
✅ Bring inside if this is cooler than outdoors

❌ Never leave in a cage or hutch that they cannot get out of. They need access to a cool and secure run area with lots of shade.
❌Never leave them in the sun without any shade

Signs of heatstroke:

❗Fast breathing
❗Wet nose
❗Wobbly and weak
❗Drooling or salivating
‼️At worst heatstroke can lead to seizures and death

If you think your rabbit or other small furry pet has over heated - act fast!

✅ Move to a cold, shady, well ventilated room
✅ Call your veterinary team
✅ Use cool or cold water on your pet
✅ Keep the car cool on transfer using windows or air-conditioning
❌ Don't transfer with a wet towel over, as this will quickly warm up and stop the cooling process

Heatstroke in Dogs 🥵🐕 🐶 🐩 🥵

With our sudden rise in temperature, the Royal Veterinary College (RVC) have recently issued a strong guideline.
It’s great to have some excellent, up to date evidence based research, concluding:

✅ If you think your dog has dangerously overheated - COOL FIRST, TRANSPORT SECOND!

✅ Place your dog in a cool, well ventilated area (or use a fan)

✅ If conscious, offer cool water to drink (do not force water in)

✅Pour cool water all over the dog, avoiding their head and combine with air movement (fan, air conditioning or breeze)

✅ Phone your vet for further advice (more serious symptoms of heatstroke may not be immediately apparent)

Meet Percy (lighter ears) and Lily (darker ears) who came to see vet Mia for their health check, parasite prevention and first vaccinations recently.
They were both given a clean bill of health and will return in a few week’s time for a second dose.
Our kitten package also includes monthly weight checks with our nurses and general advice on all things “kitten”
Percy and Lily live together and will be indoor cats. They have lots of lovely enrichment, including toys, hiding places and a large cat tree at home to play with.
Once they reach 16-18 weeks of age we will be neutering them and placing a microchip so they are both legal and as safe as possible👌
What beautiful little stunners they are!

If you need a reminder of how useful a microchip can be for your cat, read this heart warming story…

In Oct 2019 Sweetpea, a cat from Weston Super Mare, went missing from her home leaving behind her heartbroken owners and sister cat . Her owners searched long and hard with no sightings of her. Eventually they gave up hope that she would ever return and feared the worst.

Fast forward to June 2024 when a cat came into Nurture Wells to see if it was microchipped.

This cat had turned up on a dairy farm at Chewton Mendip in Jan 2020 and took up residence in the calf shed. A farm worker began feeding her and she became “Kit the farm cat.” She lived a happy free range life in various sheds around the farm, enjoyed rides in the Land Rover and the company of the cattle.

In May 2024 the farm worker, who had been looking after Kit, was leaving the farm and decided to take Kit with her. Kit quickly made herself at home in the guest bedroom!

With the new Cat Microchip Law coming into force, Kit was presented at the practice for a microchip.

It quickly became apparent that Kit was in fact, Sweetpea☺️

A call was made to her registered owner and she was overcome with emotion that Sweetpea was still alive!

A reunion was arranged and Sweetpea was reunited with her family and sister cat.
The story is even more remarkable, these two cats were born in India and cared for by their owners, who then returned to the UK bringing their precious cats with them.

So Sweetpea is one very well travelled cat…😵

Lovely 4 year old Reggie, was hospitalised for several days with a feeding tube in place. He’d picked up something silly and had horrible ulcers in his mouth.
He really enjoyed short walks, ball chase games, sniff safaris and of course many cuddles from our nurses, to keep his spirits up whilst in hospital!
We’re all delighted that you’re feeling better Reggie 😍😍

It’s Fledgling season!!

We are often presented with baby birds at this time of year.

This is a normal lifestage of a baby bird. They live on the ground when they are too big for the nest but cannot fly yet. They are much tougher than they look and their parents remain nearby and will be feeding them.

If you find one in an exposed location move it into the undergrowth to hide it. Please don't take it away from the area.

Of course, if it has been injured or caught by a cat then it will need veterinary attention before transfer to a specialist for handrearing. We are very happy to help with these.

To give these little birds the best chance of a successful life back in the wild, where they belong, they really need to be raised along with other youngsters of the same species at a dedicated facility.

We are offering a SPECIAL PRICE of £20 to have your cat microchipped and registered to a fully supported National database, by a Registered Veterinary Nurse throughout June and July.
Please contact us for your appointment.

The deadline (10th June) is fast approaching for it to become a legal requirement for all pet cats to be microchipped and their details kept up to date on a database.
This is a hugely positive step for cat welfare ☺️
We all want the best for our cats and microchipping them is a simple, responsible and kind part of pet ownership.
Should your cat become lost, stolen, or injured, they can more easily be reunited with you.

Storm is only 4 months old. He absolutely adores Lickelix cat treat.
He arrived at the practice with a most unusual injury.
Poor Storm launched himself at his owner with such gusto when she produced a tube, that he landed on it and scratched his eye!!
It was very sore indeed and he had a nasty scratch across his cornea, which he had some eye drops for.
We’re delighted to see his eye is so much better and finger’s crossed he will slow down a little now…

Both of our current student Veterinary Nurses, Rhi and Katie, started work at the practice on our Reception Team and well, the nurses kind of stole them…🤷‍♀️
They wanted to come, honestly!
Your couldn’t find a pair of more caring and dedicated nurse students if you tried.
They work hard all week, under the watchful eyes of their Clinical Coaches and spend one day a week (and many extra hours) learning all the theoretical underpinning knowledge they will need, to pass those coveted exams and become fully fledged Registered Veterinary Nurses😊
Did I mention that they make us laugh every day too??!

So proud of our own super Veterinary Nurse, Molly who ran the Bristol Half Marathon yesterday, in all that heat… 🥵

She has been training hard, for several months now, alongside working full time at the practice.

In honour of her Grandad, Molly decided to raise funds for Dementia UK

Great job Molly - well done! 👏👏👏

This month is Veterinary Nursing Awareness Month - 💚

It’s a month where BVNA, alongside the entire profession, champion all things veterinary nursing. Raising awareness of the skills, training and dedication that goes into being a Student or Registered Veterinary Nurse (SVN/RVN).

It can sometimes be difficult to recognise some of the different roles within the vet team – how can you spot who is an RVN? 🤔

Look out for the following:
💚 An RVN badge (shown in our picture)
💚 The RVN post-nominals

Whenever your pet encounters an RVN in your vet practice – whether alongside you as their caregiver, or as an in-patient behind the scenes – you can be assured that their needs are being met by a highly knowledgeable, skilled and dedicated team.

Meet lovely Benji☺️
He is a wonderful old gentleman of over 19 years and still going strong!
The first 15 years of his life were a doddle and then he got some odd digestive symptoms which turned out to need some intensive treatment and surgery for lymphoplasmacytic inflammatory bowel disease (IBD)
He also suffered with high blood pressure and renal disease.
However, with a very specific diet, some long term medication, regular check ups (and nail clipping!) and the all important tender loving care of his family, Benji is still enjoying life in his own gentle manner.
Benji, we salute you Sir! 👌
