🩵🐾 Cuteness overload 🐾🩵

Little Winston came in for his first vaccination and my goodness he was such a good boy. He definitely kept us distracted while we should have been working!

Vaccinations help to protect your puppy from severe life threatening infectious diseases. It also stops them from passing these dangerous infections onto other dogs. Your dog’s vaccine cover them for.

All dogs in the UK should be vaccinated against:
Parvovirus
Distemper
Leptospirosis
Infectious hepatitis

We also recommend making sure they are protected against kennel cough which is a separate vaccine that is given in a liquid form up the nose.
Kennel cough is the common name given to infectious bronchitis in dogs. Just as in chest infections in humans, a number of different bacteria and viruses can cause the illness – normally a combination of both. It affects their respiratory system, causing them to cough.

🌟Update from government website on the neutering of XL bullies.🌟

The deadline for neutering the youngest XL Bully dogs is to be extended following engagement with the veterinary industry.

The new deadline to neuter XL Bully dogs that were less than 7 months old on the 31 January 2024 will be 30 June 2025. We will make this change through legislation as soon as parliamentary time allows.

This is to make sure we safely manage the existing XL Bully dog population, balancing the welfare of these animals with keeping people safe.

Neutering for older dogs remains the same. For dogs that were 12 months or older on the 31 January 2024, this has to be done by the 30 June 2024, while dogs aged at least 7 months old, but less than 12 months old on the 31 January 2024 must be neutered by 31 December 2024.

With leas than a month before the first deadline of 30 June 2024, owners of older dogs are reminded to book an appointment with the vet in good time.

If evidence is not provided that the dog has been neutered by the relevant deadline, owners will be breaching the legal requirements to keep an XL Bully dog and it may be seized by the police.

It remains an offence to breed or rehome an XL Bully dog regardless of its age.

🐾🐈 Meet Crumpet 🐈🐾

Crumpet came to see a few weeks ago for the vet to discover that one of his testicles hadn’t descended. So he was booked in to be castrated.

Cryptorchidism is the failure of one or both testicles to descend into the sc***um, because of this the vet needs to make an abdominal incision to be able to remove them.

🐈 🐾 Berlioz 🐾🐈

Berlioz had his owners very worried after coming back home with a something stuck up his nose! They rushed him down to see our vet who discovered that it was a long piece of grass. Luckily there was no damage and he was able to go home were he can get up to more mischief.

🦔 Hedghog nesting season is upon us 🦔

May and June is the highest activity for hedgehogs to reproduce and very sadly this time of year so many hedgehogs are injured or killed by cutting machines in gardens. When gardening make sure to look out for any signs of nesting hedgehogs 🦔

Let’s talk about Lungworm 🪱

Lungworm is a parasitic worm that can travel to your dog’s heart and lungs 🫁 🫀

Dogs catch lungworm by ingesting larvae found in infected snails, slugs or frogs 🐸

Symptoms can include:

✖️Coughing
✖️Breathing problems
✖️Lethargy
✖️Inappetance
✖️Slower clotting from a wound

In mild cases an infection is not always noticeable, but in more severe cases it can cause bleeding pretty much anywhere in the body which if left untreated can be fatal🩸

Lungworm can be easily prevented with regular anti-parasitic treatment such as Advocate or Nexgard Spectra. This is particularly important in the South East where there is a high prevalence 💊

🌻🌹It's a wonderful time of year, but Spring can bring extra dangers to your pets! The key is to be prepared and know the dangers to look out for..

Spring toxins to watch out for at this time of year:

1. Spring bulbs 🌷🌸🌼🌻🪷🌾🪻
Daffodil, tulip and crocus bulbs are toxic and can poison a dog or cat if they were to dig up and eat any.

2. Herbicides & fungicides – plant and fungal-killing chemicals 🪴
Examples of these are w**d killer and mildew control.

3. Rodenticides ☠️
If you find you have a rodent problem and you have pets, never use rodenticides. They are as attractive to your cat or dog as they are to the rodents they are designed to kill, and that’s why they account for so much of the pet poisoning seen by vets every year.

4. Antihistamines 💊
Always be very careful not to leave antihistamines lying around as they can prove highly toxic to pets, in high quantities. Symptoms to look out for include agitation, lethargy, vomiting, and seizures, and they could prove fatal.

5. Lilies🌺
Beautiful they may be, but they are also highly dangerous to cats. For some, even being in the same room as lilies can be enough to cause a toxic reaction.

Veterinary Nurse Awareness Month 💚🌟💚🌟

One of the vital skills Veterinary Nurses learn out how do and carry out is taking and running blood samples from our pets 💉🩸

Our Head Nurse Deanna is here running pre anaesthetic bloods before the animals undergo surgery.

We do this so know how their liver and kidneys are functioning so that we can assess and alter the drugs we use and put in protocols to create a safer anaesthetic.

This can be done for animals of all ages but we highly recommend having it done for animals over the age of 8 years. 💉🐾
