TOP TEN TIPS FOR FITNESS & SOUNDNESS WHEN BRINGING HORSES BACK INTO WORK AFTER A WINTER BREAK

Following on from yesterday's post on the pros and cons of roadwork, which had a few people foaming at the mouth :), here are my top ten tips for bringing horses back into work to get them fit and keep them sound.

1) Limit the amount of trotting on roads to 5-10 minutes a day

2) Walk as much as you want on roads

3) Use a variety of surfaces - road, arena, tracks, all-weather;

4) 3-4 sessions per week is sufficient for increasing fitness

5) Space sessions as equally as possible (working only on Sat and Sun does little to increase fitness)

6) Increase work gradually. One of the biggest risks for lameness is a sudden increase in work e.g. from 30 minutes walk and trot to cantering uphill on a soft surface!

7) Increase the workload approximately every 2 weeks - with regular exercise 3-4 times a week this is how long it takes the body to adapt

8) Use a combination of ridden and lunging exercise (even treadmill and or swimming if you have it), especially in the first few months of training when your horses back is not as used to carrying weight!

9) Try to avoid uneven or very deep surfaces or surfaces that change dramatically from hard to soft, even to uneven

10) Boots and bandages protect - they don't support. Don't overtighten as this will do more harm than good

Busy day today but I can't complain when my morning starts with these 2 beautiful faces 😍

I'm based at here at Edenwood livery whom I work in conjunction with on their breaking and schooling livery packages. Lots of options are offered to suit requirements and budgets, so drop a message to me or Clare via the Livery page to discuss your options!

The main thing that we pride ourselves on here at Edenwood is that the horse’s happiness is our priority, we like to think that we go the extra mile for horses and our clients. We have over 20 years experience of running livery yards and live on site, as does our groom. Security is one of our top priorities, we carry out night checks, and extra checks on nights that may have fireworks, planned or unplanned! We like to make sure every horse here is settled and happy in their environment.

A range of livery packages are offered, and can be tailored to suit your individual needs. We are lucky to have such fantastic grazing available, we offer summer 24/7 turnout on rested paddocks and no limited turnout over winter. All we ask is that horses are brought in by 7:30pm.

Please message via Facebook or call/text Clare on 07984937973. Based in Wrenbury between Nantwich/Whitchurch.

Thank you,
Edenwood Livery

📢❗JJ Freelance Equestrian/ Cheshire Equine Clipping ❗📢

Hi!
This page has been created as an extention to Cheshire Equine Clipping, which will soon (hopefully- if fb sorts itself out!) merge with this page.

It is still the same business, but now under the name of JJ Freelance Equestrian.
This consolodates my clipping page with the additional services that I already carry out, but have not previously advertised online, due to the fact that the majority of my clients were initially built up via word of mouth or recommendations. I often get tagged in posts on Facebook looking for the work I carry out, so it made sense to create just one page advertising the broader range of services.

JJ Freelance Equestrian covers:
Schooling/backing (lightweight jockey)
Clipping/Turnout
Groom/Holiday cover

A breakdown of these services will shortly follow!

Thank you for your continued support and thank you to existing clients who have spent time recommending me!

JJ Freelance Equestrian.
