🐰❤️ Flystrike Alert: Protect Your Bunny! ❤️🐰

Flystrike (myiasis) is a serious and often fatal condition that affects rabbits, especially during warmer months. Here's what you need to know to keep your furry friend safe:

1️⃣ What is Flystrike?

Flystrike occurs when flies lay eggs on your rabbit's skin. The hatched larvae (maggots) can burrow into the flesh, causing severe pain and potentially life-threatening infections.

2️⃣ Risk Factors:

Warm and humid weather

Dirty or damp fur

Open wounds or sores

Obesity and mobility issues

Elderly or ill rabbits

3️⃣ Prevention Tips:

Keep your rabbit's living area clean and dry.

Regularly check your rabbit for any signs of dirt, wounds, or fly eggs.

Groom your rabbit frequently, especially around the rear end.

Use fly repellent safe for rabbits.

Ensure your rabbit is on a healthy diet to maintain a clean, dry bottom.

4️⃣ Signs of Flystrike:

Restlessness or lethargy

Loss of appetite

Unpleasant odour

Visible maggots or eggs

Swollen, inflamed, or sore skin

5️⃣ What to Do:

If you suspect flystrike, seek veterinary attention IMMEDIATELY! This condition can progress rapidly, so quick action is crucial.

Let's keep our bunnies happy and healthy this summer! 🌞🐇

⚠️ Severe Weather Warning ⚠️

Storm Jocelyn is on her way to the UK, bringing with her extremely strong winds and yellow rain warnings with northern areas most likely to be affected.

If you have outdoor rabbits, please take precaution.

⛈️ Ensure outdoor housing is well protected from the elements, including strong wind and rain. Consider covering housing with blankets or tarpaulin.

☔ See that housing is raised, particularly in high-risk flooding areas.

🏠 In extreme circumstances, bring outdoor rabbits inside into a cool room, such as a garage or conservatory, and keep them away from strong smells and noises.

With New Year’s Eve nearly upon us, it’s time to start thinking about the big issues!

No, not New Year resolutions – fireworks! 🎆

As every rabbit owner will know, fireworks are very distressing to rabbits and, regardless as to whether you have indoor or outdoor rabbits, please make sure you - and your buns - are well prepared for the busy night ahead.

Today is the Winter Solstice which means it’s officially winter! ❄☃

If you have outdoor rabbits, please take precaution to make sure their housing is nice and warm in the wintery weather.

❄ BEDDING: Use soft, dust extracted straw for warm bedding material.

❄ COMPANIONSHIP: Rabbits snuggle up and share body heat to keep warm.

❄ PROTECTION: Use tarps and blankets to keep housing dry and draught free.

❄ HEAT PADS: Snugglesafe heat pads will keep rabbits extra toasty.

Remember, your rabbits will still need outdoor access to carry out their natural behaviours so don’t keep them cooped up all day!

How many poor rabbits do you think will end up in rescue centres after being given as Christmas presents this year? 😔💔

Sadly, the answer will be hundreds.

It’s not fair to give living creatures as presents, and it’s even worse to abandon them.

Please do not give rabbits as Christmas presents. And if you are looking to adopt new rabbits, please always and give abandoned buns another chance 💛

Please remember to keep me extra warm during the freezing weather,
A nice heat pad, rabbit friendly of course
Lots of extra dry hay
Bubble wrap round my water bottle, or a small bowl of water with a ball in it will help stop it from freezing
Cover the front of my hutch with a DRY blanket or towel and bubble wrap
Move me into a shed or garage if possible
If you bring me indoors remember I’m not used to central heating and will need to adjust in and on going out again

With just around the corner, now is the time to start making preparations to make the night as stress-free as possible for your rabbits.

Please ensure to soundproof any outdoor rabbit housing. You can do this with extra bedding straw and using blankets or tarps (available from garden centres) to cover their housing with. This will also protect from flashing lights which can also startle your buns.

Ensuring your rabbits have extra activities and toys will also help keep them busy through the night.

If you are hosting a bonfire party, please be aware that rabbits are not the biggest of party animals! Make plans to move your rabbits into a space in which they will be away from the action and more comfortable, such as a garage or unheated room away from any strange smells or sounds.
