๐ŸคTrigger Warning: Pet Loss๐Ÿค

Wallace initially came to see us just under a year ago because his owner had noticed a lump under his front leg. He was otherwise well but the lump was irritating him so we decided to remove it.

Unfortunately it wasnโ€™t good news. Tests on the lump revealed Wallace was suffering with T-cell epitheliotrophic lymphoma, an aggressive form of skin cancer, so Lucy and his owners had a long conversation about his options. There are often multiple ways of managing our patients when they receive a cancer diagnosis and itโ€™s vital we consider all factors before choosing the best treatment plan. His owners were clear they wanted Wallace to enjoy the time he had left without having to spend a lot of time at the vets, in case it caused him anxiety. Wallace loved his life and they didnโ€™t want that to change.

After a discussion with an oncologist at the Royal Veterinary College, Lucy discovered there was a tablet based chemotherapy protocol which could be given every 3 weeks. Chemotherapy in pets is different to chemotherapy in humans- especially in protocols like this one. With this protocol, whilst a cure was unlikely, side effects were rare and would enable Wallace to maintain a good quality of life whilst slowing the growth of new tumours. There were other options too, some more invasive which may have suited other patients but they were wrong for Wallace; just because we can doesnโ€™t always mean we should.

We agreed before starting chemotherapy if Wallace didnโ€™t cope well with it weโ€™d stop immediately, but he was genuinely none the wiser. He began to enjoy his minimally invasive trips to the vets, having his tablet in a sausage every few weeks. We always knew the duration of the chemo would be limited, and unfortunately a few months in, whilst Wallace outwardly appeared well, his bloods showed some of his liver parameters subtly starting to change. Not wanting to risk worsening Wallaceโ€™s quality of life chemotherapy was stopped and we moved to managing Wallace with a palliative care regime.

With this regime Wallace shouldโ€™ve had an additional six weeks but he beat all the odds. Thanks to his dedicated owners he maintained an excellent quality of life for a further 6 months, remaining a happy boy none the wiser to his predicament.

But sadly, as we knew it would, Wallaceโ€™s cancer started to spread. Small lumps started to appear all over his body and within a few days started to grow uncontrollably. Wallace remained himself but we knew this would soon change. In short, it was time to make a difficult decision.

Wallace was put to sleep at home in his garden. He passed away peacefully surrounded by his family eating Smackos in the sunshine. It is easy when writing these posts to solely celebrate the animals we saved. Of course itโ€™s the outcome we want, but sometimes it doesnโ€™t work like that, and in truth sometimes the sad moments are the most important. Moments like this, when we were able to give this gorgeous dog who meant so much to everyone he knew, a dignified, stress free end to his life. Sometimes itโ€™s what this job is all about.

Thanks go to Wallace and his wonderful owners for allowing us to share his story๐Ÿค

This gorgeous little Norfolk Terrier is Nellie, (pictured with one of her equally gorgeous puppies)๐Ÿถ

Nellie presented to our out of hours team in the middle of the night with severe breathing issues. We initially attempted to stabilise Nellie with medical management but her condition continued to worsen. We carried out the tests we could with Nellie conscious but still had no answer. Given Nellie was not stable enough to travel to a referral centre, the best option was to anaesthetise her to investigate the cause of the problem.

What we found was very unusual. Nellie had an abscess in one of her laryngeal folds blocking the top of her airway. Given the abscess was large and the surrounding tissues markedly inflamed, we knew it wouldnโ€™t be safe to recover her from the anaesthetic without performing a tracheotomy. A tracheotomy is a procedure where a plastic tube is inserted directly into the airway through the neck. This allows the animal to breathe despite the swelling causing an obstruction to the upper airway. As you can imagine, it can be a risky procedure especially in such a small dog, but Heather and Sam performed it effortlessly.

Nellie had a smooth recovery from her anaesthetic managed expertly by our nurses Ali and Grace. She was soon breathing more comfortably through her tracheotomy tube and stable enough to travel so we were able to transfer to the specialists at Granta Referrals. Nellie was at Granta for a further week. She had numerous surgeries but we are pleased to announce that she is now fully recovered and back to her normal jolly self.

Well done Nellie๐Ÿถ

Whilst it is more commonly dogs which eat things they shouldnโ€™t, cats can be equally culpable!
Meet the gorgeous Sheep! Sheepโ€™s owners brought him in to see us after he was lethargic and unable to keep food down. An x-ray showed Sheep had likely eaten string which was stuck in his stomach. Sheep was rushed into surgery where Heather removed a large amount of twine from his stomach and intestines. Thankfully he recovered well from his procedure and is now completely back to normal!

Well done Sheep๐Ÿ‘

Last week you may have seen that nurse Georgie asked members of staff to leave a comment about why our nurses are so brilliant, this week she has done exactly the same for our Reception Team! Our front of house teams are your first point of contact for anything your pet needs and look after you before and after your appointments with the vet. They work incredibly hard managing the diary, responding to any queries clients may have and liaising with the vets and nurses to keep everything running as smoothly as possible!โ˜บ๏ธ

Molly is a gorgeous kitten currently in the care of the wonderful Cats Protection. At 8 weeks old Mollyโ€™s fosterer brought her into our Ipswich branch for a check up as Molly was a little quieter than her litter mates. On listening to Mollyโ€™s heart, Heather discovered Molly had a loud heart murmur. It is not uncommon for young animals to have a quiet murmur but given Mollyโ€™s was louder than normal we decided to internally refer her to Aleks for a heart scan.

As you can imagine performing an ultrasound on a kittenโ€™s heart- which is about the size of a blueberry- is very difficult. Thankfully Aleks- as well as heading up our out of hours team- is a very gifted ultrasonographer and was able to diagnose the cause of Mollyโ€™s heart murmur. She discovered Molly had a tiny โ€˜hole in her heartโ€™ also known as a ventricular septal defect (VSD). Diagnosing a VSD in a kitten is a very difficult thing to do, so we really are very lucky to have someone with Aleksโ€™ talents on the team!

In order to assess whether this would affect Mollyโ€™s life in the long term, Aleks referred Molly to Cambridge Vet School for further tests. Thankfully the specialists at Cambridge concluded the defect in Mollyโ€™s heart should have little to no affect on the quality or length of her life. They have recommended Molly have a follow up ultrasound scan when she is fully grown just to be sure, but fingers crossed it just confirms her excellent long term prognosis.

Molly was spayed at the practice a couple of weeks later and is now ready for rehoming. If youโ€™d be interested in rehoming Molly (with that face who wouldnโ€™t be?) then please call Lin on 07773 635114โ˜Ž๏ธ

This gorgeous little dog is Freddie๐Ÿถ
Freddie was rushed in by his owner after she noticed he was becoming progressively lethargic and passing bright red urine. On examination Freddie was quiet, had very pale gums and a rapid heart rate. He was admitted immediately for blood tests and was found to be markedly anaemic. Further investigations confirmed Freddie was suffering from IMHA, an autoimmune condition where his body attacks his own blood cells.

Medications to suppress Freddieโ€™s immune system were started straight away, but as it takes a few days to see the effects of these medications, given his worsening clinical signs, it was decided the Freddie needed a blood transfusion. Whilst we sometimes collect blood from local donor dogs who belong to staff members, we felt it was in Freddieโ€™s best interest to receive โ€˜packed red blood cellsโ€™, a special type of transfusion made purely of red blood cells prepared by the pet blood bank.

The Pet Blood Bank are an incredible organisation who save thousands of lives every year by providing blood products for dogs like Freddie in critical situations. If youโ€™d like to read more about them and their work

Thankfully Freddieโ€™s transfusion stabilised his red blood cell level and weโ€™re pleased to report heโ€™s gone from strength to strength, with his last blood test revealing his red blood cell level to be back within normal limits.

Well done Freddie!

We had a lovely time examining this gorgeous litter of Labradors last week. They were perfectly behaved and as you can see, seemed pretty relaxed about the whole thing.

Theyโ€™re a particularly special to litter as weโ€™ve been involved with them from the start. Prior to their conception, their mother, the equally gorgeous Ruby, came to us for blood tests to assess her progesterone levels. These blood tests- run in house at our Woodbridge branch- allowed us to accurately predict when Ruby would ovulate, allowing Rubyโ€™s owner to plan Rubyโ€™s visits to the stud dog accurately and secure a successful mating.

We used to have to send progesterone tests off to an external lab, which meant a 24 hour delay in getting the results, but having them in house means we now have them within hours. This can make a huge difference, and may be vital in ensuring you donโ€™t miss your bitchโ€™s fertile window.

If youโ€™d like more information on progresterone testing or have any further questions about breeding please contact your local branch via the numbers below:

Even though vet nurse Tegen is on maternity leave sheโ€™s still busy saving lives!

Some of you will know Tegen is heavily involved with the care of The Hamilton Bloodhounds and last week she became concerned about one of the hounds, Seneca, after he was slow on hound exercise.

Tegen assessed Seneca and found his abdomen was distended so brought him into the practice for further assessment. Vet Sam performed an ultrasound scan and discovered Seneca had fluid building up around his heart, a condition known as a pericardial effusion. This fluid puts progressive pressure on the heart, and left untreated can be rapidly fatal.

So Sam set about draining the fluid. Placing a cannula next to the heart is risky, but thankfully the procedure was successful and Sam was able to drain over 400ml fluid, allowing the heart to beat normally again. Seneca recovered well and weโ€™re pleased to report continues to go from strength to strength.

Well done Seneca (and Tegen!)

Whilst vet nurse awareness month might be over, weโ€™ve decided to continue to highlight the incredible work that our registered vet nurses (RVNs) do and we will be continuing to post about it throughout the year.

Whilst your main point of contact whilst your pet is in the clinic may be a vet, it is important to highlight just how hard the nurses are working behind the scenes. They have many roles including ward nursing, intensive card nursing, night nursing. They undertake nurse clinics and offer phone advice to owners about a huge range of topics. They are phlebotomists, pharmacists, radiographers and anaesthetists.

On top of all that- and perhaps most importantly of all- they are the ones caring for your pets when they are in the clinic with us. They get to know your pets to make sure they are treated with the upmost care and attention. striving to treat every one of them like they are their own. They fell the highs and lows alongside you, being there when you and your pet need them most.

Weโ€™re lucky here at Ryder-Davies and Partners that many of our nurses have even undertaken further training in areas such as emergency and critical care, medicine and equine nursing.

Hereโ€™s one of our lovely nurses Georgie, demonstrating one of the many skills our nurses undertake; a teeth scale and polish following a dental procedure on one of our handsome patients.

As we move into the summer months a reminder to all rabbit owners to remain
vigilant for fly strike.
Fly strike is a condition where flies lay their eggs onto wet, matted or dirty fur. This
most commonly occurs around the rabbitโ€™s bottom- especially if the rabbit is not able
to groom properly (e.g. older rabbits, obese rabbits, or rabbits with dental disease).
Left untreated fly eggs unfortunately hatch into maggots, which then rapidly invade
the rabbitโ€™s skin. It goes without saying if you are concerned your rabbit may be
suffering with fly strike, please contact the practice no matter the time, as affected
rabbits can rapidly go into shock.
In order to prevent the problem we recommend regular treatment with RearGuard
through the summer months and checking the area around your rabbitโ€™s bottom
twice daily. If you are checking your rabbit and noticing regular soiling or staining of
your rabbits peri-anal fur we recommend booking a check up in case your rabbit has
underlying health issues which may predispose them to fly strike.

Congratulations Tegen๐ŸŽŠ

Huge congratulations to nurse Tegen on passing her certificate in medical nursing. Tegen started at the practice- fresh out of school- as an animal nursing assistant in 2016 She then flew through nurse training and became a registered veterinary nurse in 2020, became a clinical coach to other trainee nurses in 2021, but still not content she decided undertake additional study which she passed (characteristically) with flying colours. The knowledge sheโ€™s gained from her medical nursing certificate will benefit many of our patients, from those requiring intensive care in the hospital to those we see regularly for management of long term health conditions.

Well done Tegen!
