We had a lovely afternoon for Open Day at the new Felixstowe surgery a couple of weeks agoโบ๏ธ
It was great to be able to show you all some of what happens behind the scenes and where our fabulous team of vets and nurses carry out their crucial work to help make our patients better๐ถ๐ฑ
In approximately six weeks, on the 10th of June 2024, it will become a legal requirement all cats are microchipped. The new law states all owned cats must be microchipped by 20 weeks of age. Only feral cats are exempt๐ฑ
Microchipping is quick procedure, performed by one of our vets or nurses. As shown in the video below the tiny chip is inserted between the cats shoulder blades and cats tend to tolerate it well.
If you are unclear if your cat is chipped or need to book them in please call your local branch on the numbers below:

Unfortunately it seems itโs tick season.
Thanks to the warm, wet weather weโre seeing far more ticks than we normally would this time of year. For those who donโt know a tick is a small, oval shaped parasite which attaches itself to your pet. They can vary in size and colour but most commonly look like the one pictured below. Ticks can cause your pet significant discomfort and in some cases transmit disease. Thankfully many prescription flea products (tablets and spot-ons) also contain tick control, however it is worth noting many over the counter products do not include tick control. We recommend Simparica monthly for dogs, and Stronghold Plus monthly in cats.
If you find a tick on your pet we recommend calling us for advice. Whilst home removal is sometimes possible, it is very important not to leave the mouth parts of the tick behind. If you are inexperienced in tick removal this is very easy to do, so if you are unsure please contact your nearest branch. It is also worth noting we commonly have people attempt to remove small skin lumps believing they are ticks, so if you have any doubt, please contact us prior to attempting โremovalโ.

We are proud to be part of the annual Suffolk School's Day held at Trinity Park. We have four of our Registered Veterinary Nurses at today's event๐ฉโโ๏ธ
We are a part of this important event educating school children on farming and agriculture in Suffolk and we are representing the Veterinary Industry in the countryside๐
We've had a couple of weeks settling into our new, purpose built Felixstowe site and we have received some lovely feedback along the way๐ We also featured recently in the Ipswich Star talking about the big move, take a look at the link below for a readโฌ๏ธ

A few weeks ago we had a rather unusual case presented to us at our Woodbridge branch.
Pistache had been out walking with her owners in the woods and had returned back with respiratory distress, noticed more so after exercise or excitement. Pistache was admitted for the day for monitoring and diagnostics to find out what was causing her abnormal breathing.
Throughout the day we found that she had very little issues, until she was brought out of the kennel. This was important for us to note because it meant we had more of a generalised location of where the issue could have been occuring.
It was discussed that the best option for Pistache was too place her under general anaesthetic and examine her mouth, larynx, nasal cavities' and her throat.
The general examination indicated no abnormalities, only a slight redness to her nostrils.
Our vet Sam decided to look down her throat with the endoscope and realised there was something obstructing the Choana (the back of her nose).
As you can see on the video, the obstruction fit perfectly into the canal and provided a real irritation to Pistache when breathing through her nose.
The obstruction was found to be peanuts and were safely removed๐ฅ.
Pistache returned to her normal self before she even left the hospital and has continued to do well at home.
The month of May marks Veterinary Nurse Awareness Month to recognise and celebrate the skills veterinary nurses bring to the veterinary profession.
Registered Veterinary Nurses (RVN) undergo extensive training to gain their qualifications and they then have to do a minimum of 15 hours per year of Continuing Professional Development (CPD) to ensure their skills are kept up to date.

When clients see our Veterinary Nurses they are often doing their nurse clinics, admitting or discharging patients and helping with reception duties. However, there is so much that our Veterinary Nurses do each day that people do not see such as:
๐ฉโโ๏ธ taking blood samples
๐ฉโโ๏ธ running blood samples in the lab
๐ฉโโ๏ธ dispensing/preparing/restocking medication
๐ฉโโ๏ธ checking patient vitals
๐ฉโโ๏ธ pain management
๐ฉโโ๏ธ wound management
๐ฉโโ๏ธ calculating pre-medications
๐ฉโโ๏ธ calculating gas flow rates
๐ฉโโ๏ธ maintaining anaesthetics
๐ฉโโ๏ธ monitoring patient vitals
๐ฉโโ๏ธ monitoring recoveries of patients
๐ฉโโ๏ธ processing x rays
The list would go on forever if we showed every thing they do!
Being a Vet Nurse is not an easy job and it takes a special kind of person to be one. Currently, there is a national shortage of RVNs in the UK and whilst many are drawn to the job because it is working with animals, many leave the profession.

It has suddenly got very cold and very wet quite quickly so our small furry friends may need some extra support to keep warm over the next few months. Rabbits and guinea pigs often live outside all year but we need to make sure they are prepared for the weather conditions they are exposed to.
๐ฐRaising hutches off the damp ground will help keep drier and reduce the chance of rotting and positioning them in a sheltered area away from direct wind.
๐ฐKeep their bedding fresh and dry, but also giving them a bit more than usual for extra insulation.
๐ฐHutch covers are a great way to keep the heat in but be sure to leave room for ventilation.
๐ฐBottle covers to stop their water from freezing.
