Clare , an experienced horsewoman (and truly lovely person) was working at Providence Stud seven months ago when she suffered a freak accident while out hacking her own horse. Since then she has been paralysed from the neck down . Her only venture outside the Pinderfields Spinal Unit in those long seven months came last week when friends and nurses enabled her to spend a few hours at the Great Yorkshire Show , an experience which reduced her to tears of joy. Horses and other animals have always been at the centre of Clare’s life and she yearns to get back to that world. The specialist German- made wheelchair which is controlled by head movements of quadriplegic patients is expensive, as are the adaptations needed in Clare’s home to enable her to return safely. If you are a horse rider, please donate and share. It could be any one of us,

Hi, some of you may know that, Clare had an accident on the 23rd November 2023, … Charlotte Brown needs your support for Help Clare get home with her animals.

Moonman , who I sold for £1,000 was today just beaten a head by a filly who cost 240.000 guineas. What do yearling buyers know? (Apart from David O’Meara of course)

IgG stands for ‘Immunoglobulin G’ which is the most common type of antibody found in the blood stream. It acts to protect the individual against bacterial and viral infections. Foals are born with none of their own antibodies and therefore must consume colostrum to receive these antibodies from the mare. We call this passive transfer of immunity.

𝙒𝙝𝙮 𝙙𝙤 𝙬𝙚 𝙢𝙚𝙖𝙨𝙪𝙧𝙚 𝙄𝙜𝙂 𝙡𝙚𝙫𝙚𝙡𝙨?

During a ‘foal check’ we would recommend taking some blood from the foal, assuming the foal is a minimum of 12hrs after birth and from this we would measure the IgG levels present in the foal’s bloodstream. If the colostrum was good quality and enough consumed by the foal, the IgG level will reflect the ‘success’ of passive transfer.

𝙒𝙚 𝙘𝙤𝙣𝙨𝙞𝙙𝙚𝙧 𝙩𝙝𝙧𝙚𝙚 𝙡𝙚𝙫𝙚𝙡𝙨 𝙤𝙛 𝙧𝙚𝙨𝙪𝙡𝙩:

1. Successful transfer with an IgG greater than 800 mg/dL – this demonstrates adequate antibodies have been absorbed.

2. Partial failure of passive transfer with IgG between 400 and 800 mg/dL – lower than ideal amount of antibodies has been absorbed.

3. Failure of passive transfer with IgG less than 400 mg/dL – the foal has absorbed an insufficient amount of antibodies. There can be various causes of this including: the mare running milk and losing colostrum prior to foaling, poor colostrum quality, the mare not allowing the foal to suckle or the foal not being able to suckle well so inadequate volumes of colostrum taken in, or poor absorption of colostrum from the intestines.

𝙒𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙙𝙤 𝙄 𝙙𝙤 𝙞𝙛 𝙢𝙮 𝙛𝙤𝙖𝙡 𝙝𝙖𝙨 𝙖𝙣 𝙄𝙜𝙂 𝙤𝙛 𝙤𝙫𝙚𝙧 800 𝙢𝙜/𝙙𝙇?

This is great news and you may not need to do anything! This gives you the reassurance that your foal has had the best start possible. We still need to give appropriate care and look out for signs of infection and disease but you are less likely to encounter these and if you do they will likely be less serious.

𝙒𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙞𝙛 𝙢𝙮 𝙛𝙤𝙖𝙡 𝙝𝙖𝙨 𝙖𝙣 𝙄𝙜𝙂 𝙤𝙛 𝙗𝙚𝙩𝙬𝙚𝙚𝙣 400-800 𝙢𝙜/𝙙𝙇?

We would discuss these on a case-by-case basis with you, as there may be different options for you and your foal depending on the level of risk to your foal. A plasma transfusion would be offered and this is described below.

𝙒𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙙𝙤 𝙄 𝙙𝙤 𝙞𝙛 𝙢𝙮 𝙛𝙤𝙖𝙡 𝙝𝙖𝙨 𝙖𝙣 𝙄𝙜𝙂 𝙤𝙛 𝙗𝙚𝙡𝙤𝙬 400 𝙢𝙜/𝙙𝙇 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙝𝙖𝙨 𝙛𝙖𝙞𝙡𝙪𝙧𝙚 𝙤𝙛 𝙥𝙖𝙨𝙨𝙞𝙫𝙚 𝙩𝙧𝙖𝙣𝙨𝙛𝙚𝙧?

If this is the case, the foal will likely be more susceptible to infection which can lead to potentially serious consequences such as bacterial infection and septicaemia. To reduce the risk of this we recommend the foal receives a plasma transfusion to boost its IgG levels. Plasma is the portion of blood without red blood cells, which contains the antibodies; donor horses provide the plasma and this is delivered to the foal via intravenous drip, allowing direct transmission into the foals bloodstream. The plasma is administered this way because the foal’s intestines are less efficient or unable to allow absorption after 24 hours.

The latest pic of our orphan (thank you Dorothy!) . I’ve decided to call her Ariel, after the mischievous fairy in The Tempest (her mother’s name, Rough Magic , was taken from The Tempest ) . At the moment she looks quite sad, but we’re hoping company and time will restore her spirits.
