Regularly checking your pet for lumps and bumps is crucial for their health and well-being.

Here's a quick guide for your cats, dogs, rabbits, and guinea pigs:

Why it's important:
✔️Early detection can lead to early treatment.
✔️ Lumps can be benign or a sign of something more serious.

How to check:
✋ Pet comfortably: Ensure your pet is relaxed and comfortable.
✋ Use gentle hands: Run your hands over their body, feeling for any unusual lumps or bumps.
✋ Check common areas: Pay attention to the head, neck, chest, abdomen, and limbs.
✋ Observe changes: Note any changes in size, shape, or texture over time.

When to see a vet:
✔️If you find a new lump or bump.
✔️If an existing lump changes size, shape, or colour.
✔️If the lump is painful to touch or causes your pet discomfort.

Regular checks can help catch potential health issues early and we advise making it a part of your grooming routine.

Stay vigilant, and keep your pets happy and healthy! 🐶🐱🐰🐹

Have you ever found a stray pet but felt unsure of what to do? Your actions can make a significant difference in ensuring the safety and well-being of a stray cat or dog. Here are several steps you can take:

🥰Approach with care: Stray animals, often frightened and injured, may react unpredictably. Approach slowly and speak gently to avoid adding their fear.

🔒 Check for identification: Look for a collar with tags that might have the owner's contact information. Some pets also have microchips, so a visit to a local vet or animal shelter for a scan is a good idea.

💧 Provide food and water: Offering the animal some food and water not only helps gain its trust but also ensures it's not hungry or dehydrated, showing your compassion for its well-being.

🏡 Keep them safe: If possible, bring the Animal into a safe and secure area, such as your home or back garden, away from traffic and other dangers.

📲📸 Social media: Posting a photo and description of the pet on local community boards, social media platforms, and lost-and-found pet websites can help. This simple act can help spread the word quickly and increase the chances of reuniting the pet with its owner.

By taking these steps, you can help ensure that the stray cat or dog receives the care it needs and has the best chance of being reunited with its owner.

🏖️Heading to the beach this summer?

Dog-friendly beaches are great places for dogs to exercise and have fun, but it is important to be aware of hidden hazards and possible dangers when planning a trip. 🐶

Here are a few things to watch out for on your next trip to the coast…

🌊 Be mindful of strong currents and tides. These can be particularly dangerous for both humans and dogs, especially if they are not familiar with the sea. Always check tide times and keep an eye on the water while you and your pet are playing near the shore.

🎣🍾🐚Secondly, be cautious of sharp objects like broken shells, glass, or discarded fishing gear. These can cause injuries to your pet's paws or if they are swallowed It's a good idea to carry a basic first-aid kit with you, just in case.

🐙 Look out for jellyfish and other marine creatures that might have washed ashore. Some can sting or bite, leading to painful reactions. Keep your dog on a lead if you suspect such hazards might be around.

🌞Another important consideration is the heat. Sand can become extremely hot under the sun, burning your dog's paws. To avoid heatstroke, ensure that both you and your dog stay well-hydrated and find shade out of the sun.

💩Lastly, always be respectful of local wildlife and other beachgoers. Keep your dog under control, pick up after them, and dispose of any waste properly. This helps keep beaches clean and enjoyable for everyone.

With these precautions in mind, you and your canine companion can safely enjoy the many wonderful beaches the UK has to offer.

Happy exploring! 🐕🚶

🚶🦮🌞 Walking your dog in the summer can be a delightful experience for both you and your canine companion.

The warm sunshine and longer days provide the perfect opportunity to explore new walks, visit dog parks, or enjoy a stroll around your local area. 🌳❄️☀️

It's important to keep in mind a few tips to ensure your dog's safety and comfort during these outings.

🤚 First, always check the pavement temperature with the back of your hand before heading out. If it's too hot for your hand, it's too hot for your dog's paws. Opt for grassy areas or shaded paths to prevent burns.

💧 Secondly, bring plenty of water for both you and your dog to stay hydrated, and take breaks in the shade to cool down.

🌄Consider walking early in the morning or later in the evening when the temperatures are cooler.

Additionally, be mindful of signs of overheating, such as excessive panting, drooling, or lethargy, and seek immediate shade and water if these occur.

With these precautions, you can enjoy the simple pleasures of a wagging tail and the happy companionship of your loyal friend.

🦟 TICKS ,TICKS, TICKS

If you have spotted a pesky tick on your pet, here are some handy tips on how to safely remove a tick:

➡️ Slide the tick remover (or if you do not have one of these, fine-tipped tweezers should do the trick) under the tick as close to your pet’s skin as possible.

➡️ If the tool doesn’t fit neatly, try a different size.

➡️ Be very careful to hold the tick gently and close to the skin.

➡️ Twist the tick: Without pulling upwards, twist the tool in one direction until you feel the tick loosen. It will let go when you’ve turned enough.

➡️ Remove the tick: Slowly lift the tool away from your pet; the tick should release and stay in the hook.

➡️ Dispose of it in a sealed container or resealable freezer bag to prevent it from attaching to other people or animals.

➡️ Clean the area: After removing the tick, clean the affected area with warm salty water.

Happy World Chocolate Day! 🍫

Although World Chocolate Day is a joyous occasion for chocolate enthusiasts, it's essential to be mindful that chocolate can be highly dangerous to pets, especially dogs and cats. 🐶😺

Chocolate contains theobromine and caffeine, both of which are harmful to animals. The darker the chocolate, the more harmful it can be. Even small quantities can lead to serious health problems such as vomiting, diarrhoea, rapid breathing, elevated heart rate, and, in severe instances, seizures or, worse, death.

By taking a few simple precautions, we can ensure a safe and enjoyable World Chocolate Day for all, including our pets. Here are some pet-friendly tips to consider:

🍫Keep chocolate out of reach: Store your tempting chocolates in secure containers or cabinets to prevent dogs from reaching them.

🍫 Educate friends and family: Inform your loved ones about the dangers of chocolate for dogs and ask them to keep chocolate products away from your dog.

🍫 Avoid sharing: Refrain from sharing chocolate with your pet, as even a small amount can be detrimental.

🍫 Stay alert: Be observant of signs of chocolate ingestion in your dog, such as restlessness, increased heart rate, vomiting, or diarrhoea. If you suspect your pet has consumed chocolate, contact your vet without delay.

If you suspect your pet has ingested chocolate and is experiencing vomiting or any of these symptoms, please get in touch with us immediately.

Pets, just like humans, can suffer from allergies. As a pet owner, it is important to be aware of the common allergies and their symptoms.

🐾 Flea Allergies:
Flea bites can trigger allergic reactions in pets, leading to excessive scratching, biting, redness, inflammation, and hair loss. Regular flea treatments are essential.

🍗 Food Allergies:
Common allergens include beef, chicken, dairy, and grains.
Symptoms may include itching, hives, vomiting, diarrhoea, and chronic ear infections. If you notice these signs, consult your vet.

🌸 Environmental Allergies:
Allergens such as pollen, dust, mould, and certain plants can cause itching, redness, inflammation, and respiratory issues like coughing and sneezing.

🧴 Contact Allergies:
Triggered by substances like carpet cleaners or grooming products, these allergies cause itching, redness, inflammation, and, in severe cases, blisters or lesions.

🌬️ Inhalant Allergies:
Breathing in allergens like pollen, dust, or mould can lead to sneezing, coughing, wheezing, and difficulty breathing.

Stay vigilant and get in touch with us if your pet shows any signs of these symptoms.

July is National Pet Loss Prevention Month, which aims to minimise the number of pets that go missing, so throughout the month, we will share some top tips to help you keep your pet safe and secure.

Whether you're a new pet owner or have been one for years, these tips are designed to help you create a safe environment for your pet.

🏡Take a proactive approach by conducting a thorough inspection of your garden. Ensure your fence is not only tall enough to prevent your pet from jumping over it (ideally 6ft tall) but also deep enough into the ground to deter any escape attempts.

💨⛈️Regular checks are key to maintaining a secure environment for your pet. After any storms or high winds, it's important to inspect your garden for any potential damage that could compromise your pet's safety.

🏡 Always keep gates securely closed when your dog is in the garden to eliminate any possibility of escape.

Do you know what illnesses affect rabbits the most?

As prey animals, rabbits hide pain and illness well. Therefore, it is very important for your rabbit to have a check-up at least once a year to detect any underlying issues or detect and potential problems early on.

To keep your rabbit fit and healthy, we recommend carrying out the following checks at home:

👁️ Eyes: Ensure your rabbit’s eyes are clear, shiny and free from discharge

👂 Ears: Ensure your rabbit’s ears are free from discharge and no mites are present

👄 Mouth: Ensure your rabbit’s mouth is free from drooling and there is no swelling present around the cheek areas

🐰Skin and coat: Ensure your rabbit is appropriately groomed, looking out for any fur that may be matted and bald patches, as well as mites. (If matted fur is present, a vet visit would be necessary as rabbit skin is extremely delicate, and a home groom may cut the skin)

💅 Nails: Ensure your rabbit’s nails are not overgrowing or curling

🐇 Bottom: Ensure your rabbit bottom is free from faeces and urine staining. If faeces are present, they should be gently washed away, and the area needs to be dried thoroughly. Rabbits with faeces on their bottoms are more at risk of flystrike.

🐇Rabbits are active animals and need an environment with plenty of room to hop, binky, run, dig, stretch out and stand tall...

It is very important to provide your rabbit with ample space to stretch, run, lie down, and binky. Did you know that there are guidelines for minimum space requirements for housing rabbits, whether they live inside or out?

We advise that rabbits need the below as a minimum space requirement for two average-sized rabbits. But, of course, if you can provide more space, that is even better for your rabbit’s welfare.

A hutch should be permanently attached to a larger run to ensure they can exercise freely, such as rabbit friendly room indoors or a larger secure run outdoors.

It’s recommended it is at least 2m long x 60cm wide x 60 cm tall to house two paired rabbits, which they have access to at all times, so they can move freely and explore as they would if they were wild rabbits.

Top tips:
🐰It is important to note that the space must be across a single level, so raised hutches within the space will not count towards the minimum space requirement.

🐰If you can provide free-range space, that is even better, but please ensure roaming is supervised.

🐰 Most importantly, the bigger the space, the more room they will have to exercise and keep in shape!

24/06/2024

🐰 This week is Rabbit Awareness Week, and this year's theme is 'Healthy Diet, Happy Bunnies', so today, we wanted to share a little more about the importance of a balanced diet.

Rabbits require a diet based on 80% grass or feeding hay, 15% greens, 5% good-quality pellets or nuggets (around one egg cup twice a day), and fresh water.

Feeding nuggets ensures your rabbit eats a balanced diet, as it won't have the option to 'selective feed' by picking its favourite parts out of a mixed diet.

Feeding the correct diet is probably the single most important way to ensure a healthy and long-lived rabbit. Here are six top tips for ensuring your rabbit has a balanced diet...

🐇💧 You should ensure that your rabbit always has access to fresh, clean drinking water.

🐇🌿 When providing food for your rabbit, fresh grass is the preferred choice, but when not available, hay is a good substitute that is available all year round and provides them with the nutrients they require.

🐇🌾Hay provides lots of long-strand fibre, keeping your rabbit's gut moving. It is also the closest thing to a natural diet. Rabbits would naturally graze all day in the wild, so please ensure your rabbit has an unlimited supply.

🐇 🥗 Complete rabbit food is also available, but it should not be used as a replacement for hay. Please use it as a nutritional supplement.

🐇🥦 Many plants can be safely enjoyed by rabbits, including broccoli, parsley, spring greens, and dandelions. They also love the leaves from an apple or hazel tree. When feeding them plants, you should keep the portion sizes to a minimum.

🐇🥕 Fruits should be counted as a treat for your rabbit as they are high in sugar. Your rabbit may enjoy a grape, slice of apple, slice of orange or carrots.

Imagine the joy of your dog joining in the fun on this National Picnic Day. You can prepare a dog-friendly packed lunch to include with your picnic, as many human foods are toxic or can cause gastrointestinal problems for dogs.

Ensuring your pet's safety is paramount. We recommend packing regular treats or even a frozen treat for them to enjoy slowly. Remember, when you're out in the sun with your pet, always be safe, stay in the shade, and avoid the hottest parts of the day.
