Late Cancellation and Failure to Attend Policy

Due to the increased pressure on our appointment list and to respect the medical needs of our patients, there will now be a charge for late cancellations and those that fail to attend.
Our aim is to provide timely care to all our patients and to respect the constraints of a tightly booked schedule. If you must cancel an appointment, we request notification no less than 4 hours before your pet’s appointment. This will allow us to accommodate other patients who may need prompt medical treatment

Late Cancellations: €25
Failure to attend: €40

*A non-refundable deposit will be required for repeat bookings for failure to attend

We thank you for your co-operation in this matter!

With the dropping temperatures, the use of antifreeze will increase. The active ingredient which is highly toxic to our pets is ethylene glycol. Cats and dogs are attracted by the sweet smell and taste of antifreeze and only require ingestion of a very small amount to have fatal consequences!!

🌟Veterinary Nurse of the Year Award 2023🌟

Our very own veterinary nurse Emma has been selected by the Veterinary Nurse Association of Ireland as one of only 6 finalists for the title of Veterinary Nurse of the Year!!!

This award is in recognition for the dedication hard work and compassion that nurses show throughout the year and indeed every year in what is a very tough career both professionally amd emotionally.

Emma works tirelessly both in and out of the clinic caring for all animals. During her working day she makes sure our clients pets feel safe and loved while ensuring they receive the best nursing care. She spends all her spare time looking after animals that haven't been as lucky in life, left to fend for themselves in what has become a very cruel world.

We hope you'll join us in wishing Emma the very best of luck in this award!!

It’s the time of year when well meaning members of the public are starting to bring fledgings into us, mistaking them for injured birds.

Fledglings have left the nest, but aren’t able to fly just yet, and are still being cared for by their parents. It’s an important part of their life cycle, and although they face risks (such as predators) it’s crucial we don’t interfere.

May is Veterinary Nurse awareness month

You probably recognise our two nurses, Caoimhe and Emma, as the faces who greet you when you attend the clinic, or the voices at the end of the phone when you call; but their roles at the clinic stretch so much beyond the front desk.

They are trained not only to offer you support and advice on all aspects of your pet’s health and care, but behind the scenes they are also (to list just a few!): medicating animals, preparing patients for surgery, monitoring anaesthesia, caring for inpatients, taking blood samples, carrying out laboratory tests, assisting the vets, administering fluid therapy, taking and processing X-rays, preparing prescriptions, applying and changing bandages, resuscitating neonatals, running nurse clinics, carrying out dental descale and polish, and of course giving your pets attention and tlc while they attend the clinic.

Caoimhe and Emma are invaluable here at Viking Vets and we’re lucky to have them!

Please take care this Easter to make sure your pets are safe.
If you think your pet has eaten something they shouldn’t have ring your vet right away, don’t wait to see if they show signs of illness. In the case of toxins prompt treatment is crucial.

🦷 Free dental checks 🦷

Did you know as many as 80% of dogs and 70% of cats have some form of dental disease by the time they’re just two years old!

Bad breath is often the first symptom you will notice as an owner. But dental disease can be a painful issue for our pets, and if left untreated can even lead to organ damage.

Regular dental checks can help spot problems early and allow for prompt treatment. A descale and polish (as seen in the photos below!) involves removing tartar and plaque from the teeth under general anaesthesia and can prevent further problems from developing.

We’re now offering free dental health checks with one of our nurses. By appointment only, to book call us on 051 511319.

We’ve had a number of people lately dealing with flea infestations of their pets and their home.

As with most things, prevention is better than cure! Cats and dogs should be treated regularly for fleas and worms, especially those who spend time outdoors, or meet other animals. These treatments should always be bought from your vet.

In the face of a flea problem it’s important to treat your pets for three months consecutively to cover the entire life cycle of the flea.

If you require any advice on parasite prevention in your pets just get in touch, we are here to help!

With the hot weather forecast remember our pets are particularly vulnerable.

Make sure your pets have access to shade and fresh water at all times.
Don’t walk or play during the hottest hours of the day - honestly it’s probably best to skip the walks altogether for the next few days!
Apply pet safe suncream to ears and noses of at risk animals - white cats for example!

The very young, old, and brachycephalic breeds are particularly at risk.

Watch out for signs of heat stroke:
• heavy panting
• excessive drooling
• red tongue and gums
• staggering, lack of coordination
• vomiting
• seizures

Contact your vet immediately if you think your pet may be suffering from heatstroke.

Please be aware that wet towels draped over the body trap heat and can make matters worse.
Cold baths can send the body into shock. Please don’t try to treat heatstroke at home, contact your vet.
