Our dream is for every home to have their own vegetable farm and be able to sell it to others even! Yes, we are a crazy bunch of people who believe that this is possible and we have even ironed out all the details to accomplish our mission – A Million Square foot farmers in the next
3 years in India! The urban population in India is growing at a rapid rate. According to the Institute for Resource Analysis and Policy (IRAP) report 2016, the urban population of India stands at 377 Million and expected to grow to 440 Million by 2050. There are many challenges in meeting the nutritional requirements of these people. Some of the most telling issues with respect to the urban population are listed below
Food prices especially vegetables are extremely volatile and an average middle class household spends about 45,000 to 60,000 rupees an year on vegetables alone*
Prices of vegetables are hugely influenced by Monsoons, markets, policy changes and elections
Use of pesticides in vegetable and fruit farming in India is amongst the highest in the world
Organic vegetables are often transported and stored in an in-organic way
More than 60% of the vegetable produce in India* is either refrigerated for long periods of time or is harvested prematurely and then ripened using chemicals (According to a survey about 35 various chemicals were tested from vegetables from most markets)
Organic vegetables are sold at an exorbitant price, sometimes 3X the cost of non-organic vegetables. Urban Population has more than 65% chance of getting cancer like terminal illness due to contaminated food sources*.
