At Sabz Bagh, we have developed an Animal Sanctuary which provides shelter to cows, goats and donkeys.
Many visitors have enquired about the actions above, and we inform them that just like us human beings, animals such as cows, goats, horses and elephants need their share of calcium, phosphorus, zinc and sodium to maintain their physical well-being.
Here we see Gauri getting her sodium intake from a ‘salt lick’!

Sowing Time
The field you see is where we have recently harvested our mustard three weeks ago. The area is now being made ready for sowing Urad Dal.
Puttan Bhaiya is driving the tractor and making furrows with the harrow.
The interesting part was the actions of Ramnath Bhaiya. He took off his shoes, took off his shirt, and holding the bag of dal seeds in one hand, he started to amble through the field - half running and half walking - sprinkling the seeds with his other hand. It is the way the seed is sowed in his part of Bihar, he said.
Quite a sight! 👀

Jail ki Chakki ??
—————————-
Everyone who comes to Sabz Bagh enjoys this activity.
It is an Atte Ki Chakki - used for grinding wheat in olden days in the villages. We got this from Rajasthan and like to lovingly call it ‘Jail ki Chakki’ as it was one of the ways of doing hard labour in the prisons.
But we promise you. Jail time is not mandatory. Ha ha! But it will be fun while you are at it!

Volunteering at Sabz Bagh
——————————————-
When was the last time you got your hands dirty in the soil? Or picked up a broom to ‘maro’ Jhadoo?
Our visitor, Rashi here, arrived on a day when we had just finished harvesting our keenow crop. There is a small time window within which the flowering starts, and that is the time that pruning has to be done. She was there to volunteer and she thoroughly enjoyed herself. Has promised to visit us again soon.
So you can fix 26 and 27 Feb on your calendar, come and enjoy the Sabz Bagh Experience and help us harvest our potato crop as well that weekend!

Loved the love and care that went into growing produce at the farm!
It takes anywhere from 3 to 3.5 months for a cauliflower seed down in the ground to bloom into the fruit that we eat!

“We delight in the beauty of the butterfly, but rarely admit the changes it has gone through to achieve that beauty” - Maya Angelou.
We at Sabz Bagh are fortunate to constantly witness nature in all it’s glory in myriad ways. A fine example is of how this butterfly - known as Danaid Eggfly - takes pleasure in flitting from flower to flower and sipping the nectar.
What a beautiful pattern it has. Certainly does not have any cares or worries in the world. The only way to be! Nature is allowed to flourish in all its glory!

Farmers are always at work. There is never a day off when you have an adi dant space to take care of!
We recently harvested our previous lot of Vermiculture heap which we had put into our ten pits in the month of June.
To carry on the process, it was necessary for the earthworms to get back into fresh cow-dung manure ( gobar) which they would feed on, and process into Vermicompost in the next three months.
And then we spied our butterfly friend - the Lime Swallowtail - who thought that it was tasty and nourishing meal for her!! Watch her getting the full ‘Mazaa’ out of the fresh gobar!!
It’s butterfly season now! Come visit us and watch these majestic beauties at work!

At Sabz Bagh, we are passionate and resilient in our approach and our understanding of working in sync with nature.
Permaculture - is not a new concept or practice, it has been there for thousands of years and is the core concept through which jungles and forests blossom and self propagate to continue thriving. There is absolutely no human intervention.
For the last hundred years there’s been rampant agriculture wherein, we’ve destroyed nature through the use of synthetic chemicals and monoculture etc.
A small form of permaculture here where we have our keenow patch below which we’ve grown shade living haldi ( turmeric ). The longer you keep it in the ground the higher will be the curcumin content. I’ll leave them in the ground for longer and take out only a small amount for our immediate consumption.
Next season we have lots of other varieties that were going to be trying and seeing based on the weather and soil conditions to see how they fare! Follow us for more such posts and keep updated with gardening ‘know hows’!

Life is short. If you doubt me, ask a butterfly. Their average life span is a mere five to fourteen days!
Here, two Monarch butterflies are happily sucking nectar from Bluemink flowers - completely absorbed and oblivious to our presence!
Butterflies are found on every continent but Antarctica. They act as a pollinator and food source for other species. An abundance of butterflies indicates a healthy ecosystem.
First of all, never capture a butterfly. If you remove a member of an already struggling species, you are contributing to the uphill battle they must fight for survival. If you have children, encourage them to leave butterflies alone to fly free. We must do more than admire their beauty. We must protect them.
Like bees, butterfly populations are also harmed by pesticides. To help them survive, eat more organic foods, avoid pesticides and start cultivating milkweed and other nectar plants in your own garden.
These insects need our help. So please do your little bit!

Parthenium is a word often heard in gardening discussions. A flowering plant native to American tropics, it is a parasite and also called famine weed. In India, it is popularly known as congress grass or Gajar Ghas.
The story of its arrival starts with the shipment of wheat by USA to developing countries to overcome famine and starvation in the 1950s. This was before India’s Green Revolution. The weed came across as a contaminant in the PL-480 shipments and has taken roots here ever since!
We at Sabz Bagh are taking it out by the roots and dumping it into a deep pit which we shall eventually seal. Will our ‘eradication drive’ finally succeed ? That is a big question mark. Keep following our progress!
The earth was dry - and thirsty for rain. And then it finally came. There is nothing to beat the smell of the first raindrops on the parched soil!
And as we walked along, we came across this Monarch butterfly sipping nectar from the Aak ( milkweed) plant. Did you know that this butterfly is so fond of this flower that it is actually called ‘Milkweed’ itself!! Interesting piece of trivia for everyone out there!
The earth is now satiated. Do visit us at Sabz Bagh to enjoy the myriad collection of natural wonders that abound!

Let us look at this wild shrub that grows as a creeper and is found commonly in the Indian subcontinent. It’s a thorny bush plant and grows wild in forests and jungles too.
Also known as Bengal berry, Karonda as we call it here in North India is a sour, sharp, pungent flavoured berry used to make pickles and candy. When unripe it looks reddish and white and when overripe it will turn a full dark purple.
Found in this part of the world and other places that have a tropical as well as sub tropical climate. High in vitamin C and other vitamins and antioxidants, today folks are using this as an immunity booster!
Please give us your thoughts on this wonderful berry that has so much acclaim all over the world today!

The Guava - popularly known as ‘Amrood’ - originated in Mexico and South America, and was probably spread into the world by Portuguese and Spanish colonisers.
In the video, we are pruning our Guava trees. At Sabz Bagh, we have over 150 of them and some of them are more than 25 years old!
The pruning has been done a few days ago - in time for the monsoon rains. The extra, as well as diseased branches and suckers, have been removed. After pruning, the rainy season (July -Sept) will do its magic and new branches and fruit will grow. The best harvest will be the winter crop.
We at Sabz Bagh are waiting to serve you with our tasty guavas soon. Come and pluck them off the branches yourselves. And we do have a few trees of the ‘pink’ variety as well!!!

The Peacock. One of the most magnificent birds in the subcontinent and designated as National Bird of India. While the Indian variety is blue, a green one exists in Sri Lanka and Java.
It is one of the few species in which the male is more charming and prettier than the female. Lucky fella! The male is called peacock and the female as peahen. They eat almost anything on the ground - insects, frogs, snails, snakes and rats. At Sabz Bagh, they also eat all the new shoots or ‘paudh’ that we plant - so we are always busy protecting the initial saplings till they grow to a reasonable size.
The peacock indulges in its dance to attract females or especially when it is cloudy or about to rain. Away from the loss of habitation in city areas, they find refuge in the woods. We at Sabz Bagh have complete ‘families’ here living in peace and harmony with nature - almost 25 of them! Come and check them out for yourselves, and maybe you will get a free dance performance too if you are lucky!
