Stray dogs face numerous challenges, including lack of food, shelter, and medical care. Social funding can be a powerful tool to mobilize resources for the rescue and rehabilitation of these animals. Through community involvement and online platforms, we can create sustainable solutions to improve the lives of stray dogs.
Stray dogs are a common sight in many urban and rural areas. They often suffer from malnutrition, diseases, and injuries. Without intervention, their condition can deteriorate, leading to a miserable life and posing public health risks.
Social funding, also known as crowdfunding, involves raising small amounts of money from a large number of people, typically via the Internet. It can be used to support various initiatives aimed at rescuing and rehabilitating stray dogs. Here’s how social funding has helped us:

Medical Care**: Funds can be allocated for Animal rescue, transportation, vaccinations, surgeries, and treatments for illnesses and injuries.

Food and Supplies**: Ensuring a steady supply of nutritious food and essential supplies like blankets and toys.

Spay/Neuter Programs**: Implementing spay and neuter programs to control the stray dog population.

Adoption Campaigns**: Promoting the adoption of rescued dogs to loving homes.

Success Stories
We have have successfully used social funding to rescue and rehabilitate stray dogs. The Forest Department of West Bengal arrests wildlife offenders for illegally smuggling ivory and rhino horn

On June 11, 2024, a raid was conducted by the WCCU Range of Wildlife Headquarters in the Baguihati area of Kolkata, resulting in the seizure of a total of 10 items made from ivory and suspected rhino horn. Subsequently, one person was arrested in connection with this incident. Following preliminary interrogation, it was revealed that the detained individual is a frequent supplier of wildlife products. He supplies these articles to various individuals across the country as per demand.

Upon his arrest, the accused person was taken into custody and subsequently presented before the Hon’ble court. Additionally, authorities have informed the police about the suspected illegal assets discovered at his residence. The investigation into this matter is ongoing to ascertain further details and potential accomplices involved in this illicit trade.
On June 22, 2024, similar findings were seized in a joint operation involving the Kurseong Forest Division and the 41st Battalion SSB team, led by ADFO/Bagdogra Bhupen Biswakarma. During the significant development, authorities arrested a resident of Manipur approximately at 13:10 hours near the Hatighisha toll plaza under the Tukriajhar Range. The operation resulted in the seizure of a suspected rhino horn, measuring approximately 1.25 kgs. The accused was taken into custody on suspicion of involvement in the illegal wildlife trade.

The collection of ivory and rhino horn typically involves the killing of elephants and rhinos in inhumane ways. Elephants are targeted for their tusks, which consists of ivory, while rhinos are hunted for their horns, believed to have medicinal and status-symbol properties in some cultures. These materials are then smuggled into black markets where they fetch high prices due to their rarity. Trade of these valuable wildlife articles are strictly prohibited under national as well as international conservation laws.

The illegal trade of ivory and rhino horn not only devastates populations of these endangered animals but also fuels a cycle of poaching and violence. Poachers use cruel methods such as poisoning or tranquilizing animals before removing their tusks or horns, causing immense suffering and finally resulting in death. This unsustainable practice threatens the existence of these species, pushing them closer to extinction.

The raid operations by the able officers of the Forest Department of West Bengal underscores the ongoing efforts to combat wildlife crime and protect endangered species from exploitation and extinction. It marks a crucial step in curbing the illegal trafficking of wildlife products and upholding conservation efforts in the region.

Allowing and encouraging our dogs to engage and exhibit natural behaviours like sniffing, air scenting, marking, kicking the ground, digging, shaking off, etc. can help our dogs in challenging times.

Engaging in these behaviours are a basic need for our dogs, but they can also help our dogs destress and from a startling incident or provide them with an alternative, reinforcing behaviour to engage in while something potentially worrying is in the environment. That’s why it’s so important to refrain from suppressing and punishing away these behaviours.

I’ve always attributed Dave going from “dog-reactive” to “dog-nonchalant” to being able to engage in natural behaviours more and have more choice and control in his life.

The feedback from many of my clients has also been that once they started using a longer leash and letting their dogs sniff, their dog’s reactive behaviours reduced. Sometimes their dogs are busy enjoying sniffing and aren’t bothered at all about another dog (or worrying stimulus) they’ve noticed at a distance.

This means so much more to me than a sit or down-stay, forced “place”, or a forced tight “heel”, where we could perhaps restrict a dog from displaying reactive behaviours, but we may likely be creating more discomfort with our dogs unable to be move naturally and freely.

Of course, this absolutely doesn’t mean we shouldn’t teach our dogs skills or work systematically on counter-conditioning and desensitisation with them. That’s all still important and part of helping them feel safer in this world. But we mustn’t neglect the importance and power of letting them engage in natural behaviours which is also a big part of giving them more choice and control in their lives.

“Let your dog be a dog” isn’t a frivolous concept or just a “trend”. Encouraging, appreciating, and allowing natural behaviours has real benefits to our dogs in so many ways.....
