This tiny little birdie came with with one alarming belly!😲
We immediately did a sonography to find out the reason for the swelling and found a large amount of fluid. A CT was performed earlier and on that a clear, encapsulated circular mass could be seen. The only way to go about it was performing a celiotomy as soon as possible!
The surgery went well! There was a small granuloma in the oviduct. The bird was spayed successfully 😁
Recovery took another week and the bird felt much better, lighter and started flying again ❤️
Rani just came back for a follow up 10 days post surgery and is very doing very well 😁😀

A quick little snippet of our third and last batch of #WinginIt2024 ❤️
What’s in store for the future? More courses? Field work? 🤔
Keep watching this space for more 😉

Red eared slider, Shelly, had a growth under her lower mandible.
Initially on antibiotics, while measuring and observing her growth at regular intervals, we switched to putting her on a steroid, a common practice for such growths.
Shelly's growth began reducing, slowly, but steadily . We are happy to report that during her last visit there was a significant reduction 😍
Psst... do you remember that poor grey that hit the fan a few months ago? 🥺 Well, we have an update on that case ☺️
Keep watching this space! 😉

Day 3 & 4 were so jam packed took time for us to collate this short video 🤭
Day 3 of #WinginIt2024 started with rabbit spaying 101 which included the diagnostics, surgery, anesthesia, monitoring, etc. 🐰
We also had quite a few follow-up cases such as Shelly (red eared slider) who has a growth inside the neck, Kuku (the conure) who was diagnosed with an enlarged liver, Guinea pigs for a pre surgical check-up amongst many others.
The doctors were taught, in detail, about microscopy and blood smears in avians and reptiles.
We made sure to reflect on the day gone by as well as had lectures and discussions on common issues faced by rabbits ☺️
Day 4 included a more hands-on approch where the doctors learnt how to perform phlebotomies in rabbits, placing an IV as well as IO catheters & performing air sac cannulation which are important techniques during bird emergencies. * phew * wasn't that a mouthful 🤭
We ended the day with data one can gain through necropsies especially in aviary management 🐣

Our first batch of #WinginIt2024 is a go, and what a jam packed day it was! 😅
Cuddly patients and some heart breaking cases. Dr. Bhushan Chaudhary (@bhushanvet) and Swati kalkal (@_swatikalkal_) got first hand experience at fracture setting, work-up on birds, preanesthetic checks for surgical patients and discussed on common diseases in birds .
While Day 1 was all about the feathers, Day 2 is about shell and scutes.
Any guesses on who is coming in? 😉
#ThePhoenixVets
This Cockatiel flew inside house, hit the fan and, much to everyone dismay, suffered a very serious injury. The poor little thing came in with the bone of its right leg completely exposed and pretty much beyond repair. 🥺
Dr. @siddh30 performed an emergency amputation since there was no nervous reflex i.e. the nerve that connects to the rest of the leg had severed so surgery would have been fruitless.
We are glad to say that the Cockatiel is doing great now and happily hopping around its enclosure. 😁
⚠️A note to all bird parents: ⚠️
Please ensure you bird proof / pet proof your house before getting any pet home! A small blink and miss can prove fatal to your pet. 😔

Want to a make a grand gesture on Valentines to profess your love?
Gifting a pet is NOT the way ❌
You are binding someone to a LONG TERM COMMITMENT that they may NOT be ready for and ultimately the poor animal will suffer 😢
Do you agree?
#ThePhoenixVets
Pets can be just as fussy as hooman kids especially when it comes to food 🤦🏻♀️
MJ refuses to eat his greens when they are placed in the cage, so @thebirdvet makes a point to do this little bonding activity with MJ each morning ❤️
Do you take extra efforts to make sure your pets nutritional requirements are met? ☺️

⚠️ Bird Parents Take Note⚠️
The loss of a bird, especially in a pair, can be devastating for both the human and its avian companion. The urge to fill the void is strong and thus most bird parents land up buying another one in a heart beat.
There is nothing wrong in wanting to make sure your bird has a companion, but it is CRITICAL to make sure you allow enough time for both your bird and new bird to complete a QUARANTINE period before any such introduction... or it could prove FATAL 🥺
Watch the video to know why!

Blue Gold Macaw, Mango, came in or a full body check-up (Full blood profile, X-ray, PCV test, Slide, Blood Glucose under mild anaesthesia) 🩺
Noticeably Mango was plucking its feathers and his behaviour seemed to be quite meek. On trying to understand the possible issue for plucking, we came to the conclusion that the diet followed was quite poor and needed an immediate change. 🥗
⚠️Please remember ⚠️
Feather plucking can be a result of a number of issues… such as poor diet, mites, something upsetting your bird, change in habitat, and so on. The moment you notice any sudden bald spots or an unusual amount feather’s around your bird, please connect with your Avian vet.

Remember when we said a few posts ago, tiny changes in behaviour must be monitored? 🤓
Aura’s family noticed that she was itching her ear a little more than usual and suspected something was up. They wasted no time in getting their Green Cheek Conure to the vet and boy are we glad they did! A swab test on the ear revealed a fungal infection. 😟
Luckily, since we caught it early, all Aura needs is some anti-fungal medication and the infection will be long gone. ❤️
⚠️Please Remember⚠️
Even if the bird is kept indoors at all time, pet owners must ALWAYS wash their hands before touching/handling their birds. Our bodies, especially our hands, can carry infections and pass it on to our feathered babies. 🧼
Even though birds do not have external ear pinna, but they do have ears and they are prone to ear infections just like us humans.👂
Better safe than sorry, right? 😉
#ThePhoenixVets
This baby Cockatoo came in because it seemed dull and wasn't eating 🥺
It's blood work was very concerning with the bird being severely anemic. That meant the bird was losing blood and was an alarm for us. An x-ray revealed a foreign object lodged inside it 😔
Right now this cutie is under close monitoring and our team is doing everything they can to make it comfortable.❤️
#DidYouKnow: Companion birds need their hoomans to help gently preen their head feathers and remove their pin feathers. Grooming each other is a great way for bonding with your birds ☺️
