Breeding Heritage Birds since 2011.My hobby started just over 10 years ago hatching brown shaver eggs from a hatchery to being given my first heritage pullet. The heritage birds have more nicer personalities and find don't mess your place up as much as the commercial breed. Its taken me a little time to pick what breeds I love to own as over the years I have tried out many but now I keep Blue/Stan
dard Barnevelder, Double Laced Silver Barnevelder, Rhode Island Reds, Blue/Black/Splash Orpingtons. My birds are all kept in very large pens and have the rotation out free ranging and are on automatic feeders. Also have fertile eggs on the odd occasion if my incubator is full.
I have loads of chicks on the ground now so in 3 weeks time I will have day olds available from my Rhode Island Reds, Blue/Standard Barnevelder, Orpingtons(limited) and my black and blue mottled Pekin bantams. All will be vaccinated and sold UNSEXED. I'm happy to take any unwanted Rooster back too.
I have 2 double laced silver barnevelder roosters available to purchase. NO hens available at the moment. I had 3 in my breeding group but decided which one I'm keeping. $40 each. 3 year olds.
14 uns*xed Rhode Island Red chicks went to such a beautiful home over a week ago. Look how loved and happy they are. Love when I get updates.
RIP Neil. Helped me so much over the 12 years of breeding. Such a great man and his family were always so loving and open. A man of knowledge.
It is with much sadness that we acknowledge the loss of our friend, and colleague, Dr Neil Christensen, who passed away suddenly on Saturday night.
Neil was who you called on, across Oceania, for poultry health advice and we're going to miss his humour, wit, company, and knowledge so very much.
We send all of our love and support to Patricia, Luke, Martin and their families during this difficult time.

Daughter is having fun selling excess eggs from the chooks that aren't from our breeding pens to make some pocket money for the holidays.

Due to my roster changing this year for work during summer hours ... 2 out of 3 weeks I will be able to sell Fertile eggs from tested groups. If I'm not happy with the fertility tho I will not be selling their eggs.

I just want to do this post for everyone that missed out on pullets last season. We are so sorry. It was the worst season we've had for hatching and talking with some other breeders they were in the same boat.
The girls are laying super well at the moment, so will be putting a couple of trays in for testing.
Knock on wood the girls keep this up. Our daughter has gotten right into this year so having a helping hand is going to be amazing.

Poultry ownership is fun, nothing feels better than being able to offer a free range home to some ex commercial hens that have spent most of their lives in the confines of a shed. There are, however, some health issues these birds can be a little more prone to, especially if not fed right.

We all started sometime. I’m getting old, and I hope that there will be younger ones out there who with become the NEW CHICKEN LADIES who don’t know chicken math (counting how many chickens you have!). I start with 6 and grew to 70! I always wanted to own chickens and I have to say when I joined this group years ago I felt like a newbie - entering a domain of … god another newbie question… another wannabe chicken owner! I lost 20 battery chickens in a flood and it broke my heart! I then started buying pure breed chickens and have loved them ever since! My dogs have never had to have flea treatments! Bugs are kept at bay! There are downsides - do NOT plant trees etc with potting mix that has fertiliser - chickens live those little balls and will scratch the tree out!
SUPPLY: There are still the SAME amount of chickens for sale on trade me as there were 5 years ago. 3 years ago I paid $60 per chicken for Orpingtons! The only thing that has changed is there are no rescue Hylines now which sold for $5 each - were past there laying capacity and bred not to live long.
Because there are no battery farms egg SUPPLY has dropped.
DEMAND: Consumers want eggs at below supermarket costs. So peeps buy cheeps - pure breeds. In my years of chickens pure breeds gave less problems.
COST: With the lack of grain supply because of Ukraine v Russia prices are going up! Russia is stopping grain supply - forget about how that affects your chickens … it’s affecting third world countries feeding kids!This cost adds to supermarket costs and backyard chicken owners.
There WILL NOT be an over dumping of chickens! The same amount of chickens are still the same on the market as they were 5 years ago.
Prices have NOT increased. Pure breed chickens have been between $30-60 for 5 years. Trade Me prices will NOT decrease.
There needs to be more new chicken ladies! Some of us do it for a hobby, some for business. Others just for eggs.
All I can say to newbies is GOOGLE or scroll through previous posts for answers. Gosh I seen so many questions in the past on how do you deal with mites …. That question has been answered over and over and over again! Scroll/ search before you post!
Mites around October: Exolt as chemical or I use Bioforce - look website up!
Dog roll - how much do I give them … google protein needs and fat need like corn. Just Google it or Tube it! Be proactive but also be outside the norm if what everyone else is doing! Like pellets - I decided WHY… what is in them ? So I changed their diet! Healthier chickens now!
Eggs - your chicken will lay funny shaped eggs even small ones - Fart/Fairy eggs - Google it!!!
And my pet peeve when a chicken is sick - and someone posts something about it asking for advice - an answer of call Avian Empire annoys me!! THE OG is asking YOU! They want YOU to answer! Give them an immediate HELP ANSWER to answer their beloved chickens sickness.
And don’t get hung up if a chicken dies and you gave no answer why - they just do!
Coops - NO to rabbit cheap coops on TM! Yes to Ecoflex - it’s plastic! There are options - painting them helps with mites. Wood basically is a harbour for mites. But you will get mites! Little red mites / google red mites! You will know when they have them - they will be all over you!
Yes chickens roost on trees. Some like to sleep in the ground too! A chicken will do what is comfortable for themself.
Breeds - look them up on Google. Egg laying capacity per annum and personality. Every chicken is different- like a child!
Roosters crow! It’s their personality that dictates how much they crow not their breed. If there is movement at night they will alert the flock of a potential predator.. I wish I had one when a stoat took out 13 of my young gold spangled Hamburgs!
Chickens cannot see in the dark! But they see more colours than we do including ultraviolet in daylight!
Google what chickens can and cannot eat.

Oh and search Mareks before you come across this so you are AWARE!
Watch for predators. Pukeko are not chicken friendly. Hedgehogs eat chickens from leg up. Stoats eat from head down. Rats eat eggs. Mice eat their food. Sparrows and other native birds eat their food and can pass on parasites to your flock. Our biggest downside owning chickens is the food waste - sparrows!
DO NOT let your chickens eat raw eggs - it’s addictive! Bake it boil egg shells (purely to remove the smell of an egg!) and crumble them before you give them to your chickens as calcium. I just don’t give the Egg shells full stop! Put them in your own smoothie as your own calcium intake!
Good luck to all new chicken owners!! It’s a journey of love and heart ache when a loved one passes. You will forgive the poops on the deck in time.
Keep the chicken ownership going - do not do anything that would create a new regulation. Keep our FREEDOM of owning chickens!

Due to egg shortage and 2IC to hatchery telling me it's going to get worse we brought in 100 brown shaver chicks. So if you are wanting good layers to go with pretty birds I'll be able to supply brown shavers and my beautiful hertiage girls. Also will be getting into vaccinating all my chicks once the heritage girls get back into full swing.
Going to go through all my young pullets tomorrow and start listing. Prices and photos will be attached. The colorful wyandottes are still available also white wyandottes. Could do a bulk deal depending. If you are interested in some beautiful young girls let me know.

Don't you love it when you have a order for eggs and they had been paid for then the stupid chooks decide to go on the brood or not lay 🤔 😡. Managed to send off. I paid to put on overnight. I don't think I'll do Fertile eggs now as I can't rely on the birds. Day old chicks will still be available and I'll have my first lot of pullets ready soon.

Later this season I will have Salmon Faverolles added to my list of breeds. I do from time to time have other breeds but they will be eggs I buy in to hatch. My birds are all kept in very large pens and have the rotation out free ranging on the farm and are on automatic feeders. I can supply Fertile eggs and day old chicks right up to 9-12 week old pullets.
