Just as you are starting to tire of training your bundle joy/distraction/excitement/energy here is a reminder: it’s all very normal and you are doing great!! Keep up the training 🤩

Don’t stop training your puppy too soon!

I see so many people throwing themselves into training their new puppy, but then stopping a bit too soon to really ensure they have a beautifully behaved dog for life.

When your pup becomes a teenager (around 5-6 months old) their raging hormones can make them stubborn, reactive and easily distracted. This teenage puppy stage is such an important time to keep up your training. Continuing your formal training sessions right through this period will help ensure niggles don’t become an issue for life.

I know it’s hard to maintain that level of new puppy dedication, but it’s so worth keeping up with a few training sessions a week as your pup becomes a teenager.

If you’re struggling with a teenage pup now, check out our Virtual School for Teenage Pups and we can guide you through it! https://dogzen.com/product/teenage-puppy-school/

BOUNCY BOXERS
Understanding and Overcoming Your Boxer's Arousal Problems

Common struggles for Boxer owners come from arousal and excitement
Jumping up, pulling on lead, reactivity, and lack of focus are just a few examples. We are good at recognizing problems but not at understanding where is the problem coming from.
And that's exactly what we are going to talk about in this free presentation.
It's an online event where you will also get a chance to have your questions answered by a qualified dog trainer and behaviourist who specializes in the Boxer breed.

Puppy overwhelm - what to focus on when it all seems too much

I’m guilty.

I realise I have contributed to a sense of puppy overwhelm for lots of people - my books and Virtual Puppy School cover EVERYTHING about raising and training a pup in an ideal world. But the problem is, this just isn’t possible for everyone. Of course, I need to supply all the info, but I get that some new puppy owners just don’t have the capacity when raising a new pup to do it all.

So - this is my list of what to focus on when puppy training feels like too much. The real essentials. I have put this list in order from most important - so start at the top then if you have extra capacity, work your way down.

1. Socialisation 🐕🐕‍🦺
This is the one that you really can’t afford to drop the ball on. Your pup builds 80% of their social understanding during their Formative Period (2-4 months). If you don’t do enough socialisation in this time, there is a high risk of your pup becoming fearful, reactive or aggressive. Socialise with people (of different age, race, gender), other dogs, and other species such as cats, chicken and sheep. If you can’t manage anything else, do this.

2. Get a good set up for house training and separation training 🏡
Having a good set up in your home will make everything so much easier for you. A crate and play pen area for your pup is very helpful for house training, separation training, and simply allowing you to get a bit of space from your pup without them getting into mischief. It’s well worth investing a bit of energy into getting a good set up, then teaching your pup to be happy there.

3. Bonding ❤️
Having a good bond with your pup makes everything more enjoyable and easier. A well bonded pup will focus on you, respect you more and WANT to learn from you. This means less biting, and easier training. Some easy ways to bond with your pup include cuddling and contact, taking charge of resources (food, freedom, contact), play, and mentor bond training such as my signature joining up technique and teaching your pup to gaze into your eyes. Bonus, this technique increases oxytocin in BOTH of you, which will help you feel more loving to your pup and able to cope with the ups and downs of raising them.

How are you going with your puppy training?

Puppy overwhelm.

Are you feeling it now? Or have you experienced it?

You’ve got this gorgeous, adorable new puppy… everyone is so excited for you. But you feel overwhelmed. Maybe even exhausted, anxious, guilty, resentful or even regretful.

Maybe you don’t feel all these things, maybe you adore your pup but just feel a little overwhelmed about making sure you give them the best possible start in life and set them up to be a well-behaved dog. It’s easy to feel anxious about getting it all right!

I totally get it! I see people feeling this way every day in my puppy school. New pups can be so hard! All that whining, nipping, night waking, accidents, chewing etc.

Puppy overwhelm is real and it’s tiring. Just know you’re not alone, it’s very common and it will pass.

My next few posts are going to be around how you can manage puppy overwhelm and what to focus on when it all seems too much.

Thank you Cambridge Vets for taking such great care of our bundles of Boxer joy! 8 perfectly healthy, calm and confident pups. I managed to arrive 45mins early to my appointment (woops) so the dreamteam offered to puppy-sit while I ran some errands in town 😇 The pups (and everyone in the clinic!) loved the opportunity to socialise.

Boxers are incredible family members and the most loving dogs out. But they're also velociraptors from age 6 months -18 months. Trust me, we know!

Our Pippi is now 18 months and is finally the awesome dog we knew she would one day be. As a very busy family there were days where I wondered what the heck we had done. Particularly when our family was most busy and stressed, and unable to give her the exercise and stimulation needed. On one of these occasions she fulfilled her basic needs with the excitement of shredding the kids bean bag...
our entire front yard was dusted in polystyrene snow ☃️😳🤯

So please, if you contact us about a Pup, make sure you have reflected on where you are at in your life, and fully considered that you will have a couple months of idyllic 'puppy fun' followed by an intense 'teenager' year. Once you're through this teenager phase all your efforts to train and stimulate them pays off, and your Boxer matures into the super dog you always knew they would one day be 💛
