Kawerau Alley-Cat Trust - KAT

Kawerau Alley-Cat Trust - KAT A TNR programme involves humanely trapping stray and feral cats, desexing them, and returning them to controlled colonies. Every bit counts!

During desexing, their ears are tipped, or notched, so neutered cats can be easily identified in the future. Our mission is to solve this community-wide problem through community-wide contribution...which means we need your help! Monetary donations of any amount can be made directly to:

All funds go directly towards the cost of desexing. "We can protect the environment one community at a time. As community members, it is our duty."

You know the nip is good when this happens.

Organic, dried catnip/catmint is in at the clinic (all proceeds go to our wonderful charity)

It's Gregory approved!

Cyclone Gabrielle is on the way! Is your cat prepared??

During wet weather, many cats refuse to go outdoors....even to use the loo! Holding on for too long may lead to major bladder and colon health issues, some of which can become life-threatening! An easy fix is to make sure you're prepared with a litter tray indoors! We recommend one tray per cat, plus an extra tray for multi-cat households. πŸ’¨β˜”πŸ™€

Deciding which strays are perfect candidates to become a TNR cat can sometimes be a very tough call! To ensure a released cat will be able to survive and thrive with little to no human intervention, all our TNR cats must be fit, healthy, show no evidence of contagious diseases, and have some form of consistent food source for the future (eg either from rodents, meat, and milk on a farm setting, or consistent supply of cat food from community colony carers). They must be only the toughest and fittest of felines - the Navy Seals of the cat world! Luckily, this young, big, healthy grey boy on the left made the cut with flying colours and was released onto a farm this afternoon - he was even healthier than a lot of pet cats!!

A regular question has to be why is ear tipping so important?

Our TNR kitty is empty, which unfortunately means we cannot currently help any feral cats.

Please, if you can make a small donation it would be greatly appreciated and would help one of the many feral cats in need.

Wild Whiskers Tauranga

Today's amazing charity is Wild Whiskers Tauranga . This local organisation rescues and rehomes stray and wild kittens. Wild kitties take a great deal of love and patience to prepare for rehoming and we think they deserve a round of applause!

Wild Whiskers Tauranga is a Charitable Trust run by a small group of volunteers whose mission is to rehabilitate true strays and wild kittens 8 weeks old & younger. Once old enough they are desexed and put up for adoption.

We interrupt our normal posts to bring you Dwight!

Dwight is an incredible example of what hard work, love and patience can do for a feral cat. His carer has been gaining his trust for an incredibly long time and her goal is to trap him and get him the veterinary care he needs.

While he's located in America, his is a atory that is so similar to other feral cats all over the world. They deserve to be treated with dignity and love.

P.S Dwight is also on Instagram as Cheeky Dwight

This guy lives with one of our team members and it looks like he's already in long weekend mode!
What are your critters up to this weekend?

Someone woke up a little annoyed after desexing!
Thank you Irene for your wonderful donation and for caring about this wee guy.

We said we would do it and are finally following up!

A massive thank you to the following people for making donations to our small organisation. These funds have cleared the somewhat sizable bill at the local vets, which is fabulous.

Fingers crossed the momentum keeps going so we can fund some more TNR's. Once we're at that stage we'll let everyone know.

Thank you:

We may not be a shelter or help people rehome their pets, but we can point you in the right direction.
Over the next few weeks we'll share links to some of the rescue, rehoming and shelter organisations throughout New Zealand that can help.
After all, sharing is caring.

This is an S.O.S.

For us to help those spicy cats we need donations. While we did receive a couple, for which we are incredibly grateful, our account is empty. Until we receive donations we can no longer do any more TNR.

Please, if you are able to help we would be so thankful, as would the feral cats we wish to help. Once we have enough funds to desex some cats we'll pop a post up on this page. Fingers crossed this happens soon.

Our account details are.

Recently, we've had a member of the Kawerau community enquire about pet cats inadvertently being trapped in our TNR program. KAT makes every effort to ensure this does not happen, as desexing pet cats is not where we would like our funds to be spent. For each colony of strays we desex, we do our best to inform cat owners in the area beforehand that a trap will be placed in the area. We also scan each cat that comes in for a microchip. Additionally, if a pet cat has already been desexed and was accidentally trapped, often the veterinarian will be able to tell, either by looking for a spey scar or by estimating the age, temperament, and general condition of the cat. Non-desexed, or entire, stray cats tend to be leaner, less friendly, and younger than their owned, desexed counterparts. That said, the safest way to ensure your pet cat isn't brought to us by mistake is to make sure your cat is speyed or neutered and microchipped! Microchipping can be done at the vet clinic and only costs $36 😺

What to not do if you have a stray or feral cat problem

Today we received an enquiry asking for the loan of a cat trap so this person could attempt to deter stray cats from his property. The intention was to "trap them and give them a thorough water hosing".

The reason we have chosen to talk about this publicly is because not everyone may realise but this method is NOT an appropriate way of dealing with stray cats. It is cruel, and therefore it is both illegal and immoral. Not only this, but the cat would become extremely trap shy, which would preclude future trapping for TNR or rescue.

What can you do instead? Trap, neuter and return. Desexing of stray cats is the best way to prevent unwanted behaviour. If you are willing to borrow a trap and catch the cat then go the extra step of organising desexing. If you can't afford this then check in with local rescues to see if any subsidies are available.

A note to those who have loan traps: please be careful to check the intentions of anyone asking to borrow a trap. It is a good idea to make sure a plan is in place for trapping and for the cat once caught, and check this conforms to animal welfare regulations.

Just remember, a little bit of compassion goes a long way. Community cats are a community responsibility and we all need to play our part.

We've all been so busy at work we've neglected to post! But rest assured we're still here doing our best to raise more funds for the forgotten felines in our community.
Remember, if you want to help you can make a donation (details in post below)

Wise words

WWT have a few timid &/or older kitties that deserve to be loved, just as much as the cute friendly ones. If not more, due to what they've been through in their young lives.

These kitties have discounted adoption fees but are all desexed & up to date with flea/worm treatments. They also come with a take home goodie bag which includes their very own blankie & mouse toy, which are made with love by awesome our supporters.

Please consider adopting a scared, shy or older kitty, they need great homes too, they need you❣

Unsure if the cat you've seen is feral or not?
Remember this one simple rule.
Feral = spicy
Stray = mild

You will not be able to touch or get near to a feral. They haven't had any human contact so won't trust people. (These are the cats we at K.A.T are wanting to help)

A stray however has had some contact with people at some stage of their lives. Yes, they'll be unsure, but with some time you can gain their trust.

Us when we see our first donation! Thank you to the incredible lady who showed her support for us.
Don't get too excited though, we still need more funds so please share the prior post with all our account info to help us raise money.
It's all for an incredible cause 🐈
