PUPPY GROOMING ♥️🐾
I see the “when should you start puppy grooms” questions a lot and unfortunately see a lot of concerning info with advice being puppies don’t need it till later on in life and wanted to put up something that might be of interest to my fellow dog lovers on here in the hopes that the info will be helpful to somebody.
I can't stress enough about the importance of getting your babies in for their first haircut/bath/visit from as early as possible.
The earlier you get them in the more comfortable and used to a life of grooming they will be. Dogs that come in from 10 weeks old see grooming as part of life, as something that has just always happened, as normal as going in the car or going outside in the backyard and most loooooove coming to see me 😍🐾.
Remembering most poodle puppies have their first FFT at 6 weeks or even earlier and many good breeders have taken their puppies to a groomer for a wash and dry a nail trim before they head out to their new owners.
Many knowledge, ethical breeders also wash, dry, tidy etc their pups before they go out to new homes as well.
You have a window of opportunity for introducing things to your puppies that you would like them to be at ease with their whole lives. That window is roughly 3-20weeks but ideally between 10-14 weeks for grooming. This is when car rides, socialising, outdoor excursions, being left by themselves, meeting heaps of new people and animals you want them to be at ease with should happen. And of course grooming needs to be in there somewhere too. There is no exception to this rule. I have never in 24 years seen a dog benefit from being left till later in life for its first groom. EVER! I’ve been grooming, vet nursing, doing behavioural/agility work, a grooming school tutor, a judge/examiner for the National Dog Groomers Association,
shown dogs, a master groomer, a grooming business owner for 24 years now and with many more dog related qualifications I can honestly say I have still never seen a dog benefit from being left later in life for a groom. Some of the saddest most traumatised upset dogs I’ve had to groom have been dogs at 6 months old getting their first introduction to grooming. They have no idea what is going on and completely freak out. It is a sensory overload, filled with a strange person, loud and new noises, a foreign environment and to a young dog it can be absolutely traumatis
It doesn't mean to say that your babies won't be fine if they have their first visit later in life , many are fine but unfortunately many are not.
Grooming is a huge thing for a dog that's not used to it. There are many sights , sounds, smells, people and equipment that to a dog that isn't used to it can be completely terrifying. Remembering we need to have them perfectly well behaved and still as we have some sharp instruments like scissors and blades around eyes and bodies etc
When they come in at 10-12 weeks most haven't developed bad habits eg brush biting, nipping, barking and aggressiveness. They are still very much little babies that let you do most things to them. It’s often before they have fear of the general world. They are blank canvases waiting to be worked with . They generally haven't gotten knotty or matted by this stage so don't have to endure a painful combing out session that may make them have negative associations with grooming. At 10 weeks they are very accepting of most things. Even at 14 weeks that is disappearing and you are losing your window of opportunity very quickly. Now remember there are many options for your “groom” . Don’t think that you have to give your dog a haircut if you don’t want to lose that fluffy puppy look for awhile. We can hand scissor them long, use long comb attachmentment styles or simply do tidies. It’s not about them physically needing a haircut usually at this stage (although many people opt for this because depending on the breed a lot of them do indeed need haircuts from the get go as to not overheat or get matted!) it’s about them needing this emotionally. They need the exposure to all the sights and sounds desperately but fear not your groomer will not just shave your puppy off we are only wanting to desensitise them so they’re happy with grooming forever.
A dog that comes in at 1 year that is knotty and matted will forever remember his first visit to a groomer as a painful experience of having knots and tangles pulled and tugged at. The sounds of the dryers (we have high velocity dryers that sound like rocket launchers to dogs that haven’t even heard your own person hair dryer !) , clippers, other dogs and the general goings on of a grooming establishment whether it’s a busy parlour or a quiet home groomer will be a lot for your dog to take in.
It does of course help if you're putting in some ground work at home eg brushing and combing but also you can do more damage to them behaviour wise if you’re not handling them correctly. A lot of owners think they’re helping by trying to wash and dry them themselves at home chasing them round and pinning them down …. This is not helping …. You are just creating problems for us to fix later….
Every single puppy that has come to me from 10-12 weeks is exactly the same as the dogs in the videos on my pages. They love me, love visiting and are content with grooming. The thousands over the years I’ve started at 10-12 weeks have dragged their owners in the door and been absolute dreams to groom and often go on to be exam or demo dogs or dogs for juniors to learn on they are so happy and well behaved . Again it’s because these guys have always known grooming as part of life.
I won't show you a video of the poor dogs that come in from 7 months plus as it's nothing like the videos you will find on my social media 😩😩😩
Many grooming businesses encourage dog owners by offering a free bath and dry weekly until they’re 6months old with a full groom purchase. Some even offer totally free grooming until 4 months old to encourage people to get their puppies in early. Your dog will thank you and so will your groomer for taking us up on our offers! It only takes a small amount of time to wash a puppy and makes for such a great happy little dog for groomers to work with . Previously I’d offer free grooming till 5 months old desperately trying to get owners to bring me their dogs early! Many groomers around New Zealand offer puppy packages like this too encourage it . And now more and more groomers are saying no thank you to the dogs wanting to be booked in for their first grooms that are over 6 months old. We are a little tired of getting the blame for your dog being naughty and leaving our parlours upset when we have been given the nightmare task of safely grooming your older dogs that have never been groomed before…
Re the vaccination debate. All our areas are sanitised and the dogs don’t interact with other dogs . They’re more likely to get sick from going to the vets than the groomers. Of course the vets is where the all the sick dogs go so that is the hot spots you need to watch out for!
I hope this is helpful to some of you as I weekly see owners with new dogs coming in at 6 months , 1 year even 2 years old never having had a groom and it’s heart breaking to be the one to have to “deal” to the dogs and sort them out due to the owners for some reason thinking they don’t need to be groomed till they’re 1 year old.

Now don’t get me wrong I love dogs. Every single one of them. But every now and then one comes along and knocks your socks right off. A real connection forms and for whatever reason the little buggers work their way into your heart and there they stay forever. This handsome little chap took my socks about 7 years ago and now that he’s 15 I count every single groom I get with him as a blessing. This is Zoom, the Jack Russel Terrier, Keeper of my Socks and Permanent Inhabitant of my Heart. Isn’t he fabulous ♥️🐾

I’ve been busy busy busy over the ditch at the Australian Pet Show this weekend loading up on goodies, new gear and treats to bring back to the new parlour! I was privileged enough to be asked to come over and Judge the Pet Show Grooming Competition in Sydney along side Blake Hernandez (he’s the owner of Barbies Poodle, certifies for America, the American Kennel Club and so much more) and Jacqui Ainsworth the Poodle Queen and contestant on the famous Pooch Perfect. What a whirlwind of a weekend! Here’s a wee snippet for you all to see!!! ♥️🐾

We will be spending the weekend setting up new tables, setting up water, obstacles, games and activities in the dog exercise areas (did you know for no extra charge your dog doesn’t have to sit in a crate after or before a groom and can have a play in our purpose built outdoor area) organising where the shade sails will go, filling the treat jars, making sure the signature Fancy Fox bandanas are at the ready to be given to every dog that has a groom, setting up our selection of customised brushes and combs we have for sale and much much more.
