Today marks the last day of Vet Nurse and Vet Tech Awareness Week!
This special week shines a spotlight on the vital role our veterinary nurses and techs play in animal care and welfare. From providing compassionate nursing care to animals, assisting veterinarians in surgeries, and educating pet owners about health and wellness, our dedicated vet nurses are the unsung heroes of the veterinary team. They ensure the comfort and well-being of every furry patient, and their expertise is crucial in emergency situations.
People often don’t realise the amazing work our highly skilled and passionate nurses do behind the scenes making sure to give your pet the best possible care, treating them as if they were their own. They are not “just nurses” – they are also anaesthetists, phlebotomists, radiographers, paramedics, counsellors, teachers, nutritionists, laboratory technicians and professional cuddlers. A wee update on Zahara the Giraffe at Wellington Zoo. Ray went back to check on her on Wednesday and was delighted to hear from the Zoo vets, that she’s doing fantastic since her dental procedure. She is eating normally again and is back to her usual self. Z has recovered brilliantly from her general anaesthetic which is a huge relief for everyone. There was a big posse of kids and families at the Giraffes on Wednesday and Z was loving hanging out with them all. She really is a special animal. Would you believe she loves Fennel bulbs!!! Who would have thought! So it’s been a great result all around. 🤙🏾 A couple of photos from this weeks check up. Look at the size of her tongue!! 👅

You will know our mantra is “all creatures great and small, we care for them all” at VOR. Well we took that to a new level last week when our own Equine Vet Ray Lenaghan along with our equine nurse Matt, was asked to examine a Gorgeous Giraffe called Zahara at Wellington Zoo.
Zahara had been having some issues with pain when eating, so the Zoo asked Ray for his Veterinary Dental expertise. Although best known for his work with horse mouths, Ray has plenty of knowledge of other species too, including Giraffe!
It was a huge team effort with experts from many different fields of veterinary and zoological teams, working together to help this beautiful animal.
So far Zahara is responding really well to her procedure and Ray is hoping she will back to her normal self when eating, very soon.
An amazing experience for everyone.

🎂 Birthday girl! 🎂
Jazz is a poodle who has Addison’s disease (which we are successfully treating). She presented terribly sick two years ago and we found her adrenal glands had shriveled. She subsequently wasn’t making any steroid, so couldn’t regulate the electrolytes and sugars in her body properly. We’ve treated her with steroids and she hasn’t looked back since!
She had to have a blood test on her birthday today, so our lovely nursing team made her a cake! Here’s a video of her tucking into it while she waits for her blood results.
Happy birthday Jazz! 💕
Vets on Riverbank, is the culmination of over 40 years of continuous veterinary service to the Otaki, Horowhenua and Kapiti district.
When Graham Carthew commenced practice in the early 1970’s much of today’s technology was in its infancy and “lifestyle blocks” had not been heard of. Most of the work was either out on dairy farms or back in the clinic attending to household pets.
The practice has seen many generations of companion animals pass through the clinic from puppy and kitten vaccinations through to geriatric treatments. With the advancements in technology comes improvement in digital radiology and ultrasound. Ongoing development in medicine and surgical techniques ensures our small animal team continues to provide your pet with the best care and attention available.
Vets on Riverbank are now the only clinic on the Kapiti Coast and within the Horowhenua district who offer a 24 hour onsite emergency service for our clients, provided by our hard working veterinarian team.
We are proud to have been and continue to be a part of the racing industry, having been associated with many trainers whose names are legendary in the racing circle. We have also had a close working relationship with the Otaki Maori Racing Club as well as Levin and Wellington Racing Clubs.
The filming of The Lord of The Rings Trilogy was an exciting episode in the history of the practice. The large number of horses involved meant veterinarians from the practice were required to be on-set much of the time.
However a large part of our equine practice has been the growth of sport horses. The clinic has a highly trained and skilled equine dentistry team, providing the latest dental care and treatment options for your horse. Equine reproduction has always been an important part of our equine practice. In recent years along with ultra-sounding and artificial insemination, our reproduction team performs frozen embryo transfer in mares.
We are dedicated to servicing production animals and our aim, as well as caring for individual animals, is to increase the production of your farm or lifestyle block. We work closely with farmers to obtain optimum animal health which is important in producing a quality product. The dynamics of farm animal health and production are enormous as we face all the changes and problems that confront the modern farmer and veterinarian.
As well as hands on attention to your animals, our spacious premises in Riverbank Road stocks a full range of animal care products. With our friendly helpful staff always available to advise you on all your animals nutritional and health care needs.
