It is with great sadness that we advise that Margaret Leyland has decided to hang up her stethoscope and will no longer work at Vets on Riverbank as at the end of May.
Please see the below statement from Margaret:
“I have been with the practice for ten years, and working as a horse vet for twenty years, and it’s time for me to explore some other options before I get too long in the tooth. I have many happy memories of the last decade and it has been a privilege to be part of the team that help look after your precious horses through good times and bad. It has been great to see relationships grow between you and your horses, and to play a small part in that journey… Thanks for being such supportive clients and friends. Wishing you and your horses continued health and happiness. Maybe see you on the trails!”
We do have a plan in place to cover Margaret’s clients, with the lovely Rachel stepping in, along with our other amazing equine vets, Ray and Erin to lend a hand. We are also lucky to have Lucy Russell helping us temporarily whilst we find a new permanent wonder woman/superman to join us!
Margaret, we will miss you dearly, as will your clients, and we wish you all the very best in your upcoming adventures!

To all our equine clients:
From now until 31st July 2024 Vets on Riverbank are offering free ACTH testing for Cushing's disease. If your horse has not previously been diagnosed, or is not currently on any medications for Cushing’s, you may be eligible for a free ACTH test to be carried out.
Clinical signs of Cushing’s disease in a horse include:
• Long, curly coat that may not shed normally
• Increased drinking
• Abnormal fat distribution
• Laminitis
• Poor wound healing or recurrent infections
• Usually older horses/ponies (over 15 yrs old)
If you think your horse may qualify for this testing, please contact the clinic at [email protected] or 06 364 6942 to discuss with our large animal team.
Please note that a standard vet visit fee, mileage and courier costs for sending bloods to the lab will still apply.

We will be closing the clinic today (Thursday 11 April) at 4pm for staff training

You may have seen a friendly new face around the clinic! We have recently had the pleasure of welcoming Dr. Kaz Graham to our small animal team.
Kaz previously spent time as a paramedic in the Royal NZ Navy before choosing a career change to veterinary medicine. She has travelled extensively - her last trip was to Mongolia where she competed in a 500km endurance horse race through the Gobi Desert.
She currently lives with her partner in Otaki with her 4 dogs, 2 cats and 5 chickens. In her spare time, she enjoys competing her dogs in agility competitions, hiking, running and tending to her vege garden.
Kaz is looking forward to meeting you and your furry friends! 🐶🐱

🎂 Birthday girl! 🎂
Jazz is a poodle who has Addison’s disease (which we are successfully treating). She presented terribly sick two years ago and we found her adrenal glands had shriveled. She subsequently wasn’t making any steroid, so couldn’t regulate the electrolytes and sugars in her body properly. We’ve treated her with steroids and she hasn’t looked back since!
She had to have a blood test on her birthday today, so our lovely nursing team made her a cake! Here’s a video of her tucking into it while she waits for her blood results.
Happy birthday Jazz! 💕
Vets on Riverbank, is the culmination of over 40 years of continuous veterinary service to the Otaki, Horowhenua and Kapiti district.
When Graham Carthew commenced practice in the early 1970’s much of today’s technology was in its infancy and “lifestyle blocks” had not been heard of. Most of the work was either out on dairy farms or back in the clinic attending to household pets.
The practice has seen many generations of companion animals pass through the clinic from puppy and kitten vaccinations through to geriatric treatments. With the advancements in technology comes improvement in digital radiology and ultrasound. Ongoing development in medicine and surgical techniques ensures our small animal team continues to provide your pet with the best care and attention available.
Vets on Riverbank are now the only clinic on the Kapiti Coast and within the Horowhenua district who offer a 24 hour onsite emergency service for our clients, provided by our hard working veterinarian team.
We are proud to have been and continue to be a part of the racing industry, having been associated with many trainers whose names are legendary in the racing circle. We have also had a close working relationship with the Otaki Maori Racing Club as well as Levin and Wellington Racing Clubs.
The filming of The Lord of The Rings Trilogy was an exciting episode in the history of the practice. The large number of horses involved meant veterinarians from the practice were required to be on-set much of the time.
However a large part of our equine practice has been the growth of sport horses. The clinic has a highly trained and skilled equine dentistry team, providing the latest dental care and treatment options for your horse. Equine reproduction has always been an important part of our equine practice. In recent years along with ultra-sounding and artificial insemination, our reproduction team performs frozen embryo transfer in mares.
We are dedicated to servicing production animals and our aim, as well as caring for individual animals, is to increase the production of your farm or lifestyle block. We work closely with farmers to obtain optimum animal health which is important in producing a quality product. The dynamics of farm animal health and production are enormous as we face all the changes and problems that confront the modern farmer and veterinarian.
As well as hands on attention to your animals, our spacious premises in Riverbank Road stocks a full range of animal care products. With our friendly helpful staff always available to advise you on all your animals nutritional and health care needs.
