Many people think a chubby pet is cute and a lean pet is not being fed enough, but studies show that a pet with a healthy weight lives an average of 3 years longer than an overweight pet. Don't focus on weight - focus on body condition!

Puppy socialisation is NOT just about playing with other dogs.

In fact, too much uncontrolled exposure to other dogs can cause so many unintended consequences.

If you have a puppy, make sure you try to work on ALL aspects of socialisation, as listed in the bottom graphic.

Another dog entering your house ?

Some dogs may almost close off their outward emotions when another dog is visiting (and that is what this post shows), they may be stressed.... uncomfortable and struggling but give very few obvious outward signals.

Many people misread situations as there is no growling, barking or show "typical" signals that your dog may usually give.

You may know when your dog likes another........ Outward signals.
You may know when your dog dislikes another..... Outward signals.

However in your and their home..... many dogs can behave completely differently if they are simply tolerating and may even be deeply disturbed by another's presence.

As always everyone is free to share but the post must accompany the visual. Thanks everyone 🙂

Sounds like the perfect solution... kids itching to walk their new dog + over-stretched parents thrilled that their children are taking responsibility and lightening the workload! What's not to love?

Actually quite a LOT.

I can't tell you how many disappointed faces I see when I try to explain why a child walking a dog ALONE *might NOT be* the best idea for anyone!!?

And I get totally it.

If this is your first family dog, a quick spin around the block may look harmless enough - until you consider ALL of the things that can (and DO) go wrong.

Even (mentally and physically) FULLY-GROWN ADULTS get pulled down to the ground, or dragged over to squirrels, skateboards and the neighborhood cat. They accidentally drop leashes, or watch helplessly as their pup slips their collar. They struggle to control their dog around other dogs, or conversely, they panic or freeze when an off-leash dog comes sprinting full-speed towards them (friendly or not friendly.. who knows? They’ll likely find out when it’s too late!)

And this is ONLY a handful of the things that can happen to GROWN UPS… so for kids the stakes are simply exponentially higher.

As a trainer, I’m pretty calculated about where I go, and when I walk my dogs my radar is always activated. Even still, I’ve personally had to dash after my loose dog, I’ve been bitten by a dog who was attacking mine, I’ve seen a dog run over in a school parking lot, and watched a child be literally dragged for 50ft against her will!

So, I hope by sharing the potential risks with you, you can make informed choices about your family dog walking situation:

Here’s my hotlist of things to consider:

Size - of child and dog
Strength - of child and dog
Maturity - of child and dog
Training - of child and dog
Temperament - of child and dog

Then download, print and share our poster.
THESE are my questions to help families size up the COMBINATION of their dog and child to see whether WALKING ALONE together is a SMART call.

Many cases of dogs growling at children. The reality is to ask “why” as this means there is a space violation or an issue of hurt. The dog is simply saying go away and if the child doesn’t listen behavior can escalate. When you have children teaching them how to enjoy the dog and teaching the dog how to enjoy and tolerate and accept children snd their irrational movements is required to avoid any incidents. Don’t assume, KNOW. And no the dog shouldn’t just let a child do anything to them.

Poinsettias are a popular Christmas plant enjoyed by many around the Holiday’s. APCC receives several cases each year regarding cats and dogs eating the foliage. There are numerous inaccuracies regarding the toxicity of Poinsettias. Although, it can cause mild GI upset, such as vomiting and diarrhea, no serious toxicity is expected with exposures

🚦 ✋ 🐈 Touch zones are important to consider when initiating interactions with cats in homing centres. Observing the cats body language during interactions with them in the shelter allows us to consider which touch zones each individual cat is comfortable with and whether they are happy for the interactions to be continued.

The touch zone infographic below has been adapted from Dr Lauren Finka’s work and based on research by Dr Sarah Ellis and colleagues at the University of Lincoln, UK and shows different coloured areas:

🟢 The green areas are where most cats accept touch ➡️ The areas around the cheeks and chin have scent glands and cats frequently rub these parts against objects, which means they are used to sensations around these areas being non-threatening

🟠 The amber areas are where some caution should be taken ➡️ These areas are less frequently used by the cat to rub against things, so are more likely to feel threatening if touched

🔴 The red areas are recommended to be avoided! ➡️ These areas are easily harmed in a fight with another cat, so it may feel like a threat if unfamiliar people touch them

You can download our touch zones poster to display in your homing centre, so you can talk to staff and volunteers about what it means 👉 https://icatcare.org/unowned-cats/cat-friendly-homing/care-cat-fr
What are you experiences with the different touch zones when you have been interacting with cats in the shelter? 👇

When a ball thrower enters the park, there will be a few people taking cover. Dogs racing after something at speed can cause fear, trigger prey drive and create frustration.

It’s always a good idea to throw mindfully, and well away from others.

🐈 Did you know that ringworm isn’t actually caused by a worm 🪱❓😳

Ringworm, or “dermatophytosis” as it is scientifically known, is an infection caused by a particular type of fungus called a “dermatophyte” that has the ability to grow on the skin! 🦠

Dermatophytosis is highly contagious and thousands of millions of microscopic spores are produced around infected hairs 🔍 Infected hairs and spores are then shed into the cat’s environment 🏡 so other cats 🐈‍ may become infected either by direct contact with an infected animal or by exposure to a contaminated environment or object, such as their bedding or grooming equipment 🧺

Spores 🦠 in the cat’s environment can remain infectious for up to two years and are difficult to kill ☠️

The appearance of dermatophyte infection is very variable, from severe skin disease to minor lesions. Typical lesions are discrete, roughly circular areas of hair loss. These occur particularly on the head, ears or legs. Surroundings hairs may be broken and the affected skin scaly and inflamed ⭕️

Treatment of ringworm is always advised because, although most cases eventually resolve, infected cats are a risk to other cats and also to humans 🐈 ➡ 🧍

Find out more about ringworm, including how the infection is diagnosed 🔬and treated 🧴plus how to decontaminate the environment 👉 https://icatcare.org/advice/ringworm-in-cats/

Has your cat, or one you have been caring for, encountered this infection❓👇
