Broodiness and Why we should not allow Dominant hens to become broody

I am often asked by free-range poultry farmers the question if the Dominant breeders hens or layer types are broody or in Pilipino, " Naglilimlim?" . For some farmers they would prefer hens to be broody. With their thought that being broody, will be advantageous for them since they will save money instead of purchasing an incubator and electricity costs.

I explain to them that broodiness is a disadvantage to production, sustainability and profitability. But first let me explain in a simple way what broodiness is. Brooding is the animal behaviour of egg laying animals like hens or poultry to sit on the eggs during the whole process of incubation of eggs until the eggs hatch and produce chicks. Or thru an artificial process using incubators. Thru this process the hens will STOP laying and will sit on the eggs for 21 days. Also, this behaviour will extend to an additional 3-4 weeks for looking after the young chicks before becoming able to mate and lay eggs again. Which means it will take approximately 2 months of stop egg production.

The less hybridized or purebreds or in**ed, the more broody the hens will.be.

In Layer types and Dominant breeders, we want our hens to be continuously producing eggs from the age of 4.5 months to 18 months of age. This productivity will assure a constant supply of eggs for hatching in breeders and for table egg production. Thus Broodiness is counter productive in egg production since egg laying will stop for 2 months at least. No production no earnings.

HOW TO PREVENT BROODINESS

Always use certified hybrids that have been bred and selected thru natural genetic selection as Less likely to become broody. Dominant CZ has pre selected the good genetics that prevents broodiness.

Inbreeding f1 or related chickens will increase broodiness. That is why you need certified F1s to continually produce eggs with less downtime and feeding costs.

Always prepare nests early. Setting upa a nest structure but closed from 3 months until 4.5 months is very important. Creating nest ince you see eggs being laid on the floor will create more floor and dirty eggs.

Close nest boxes from 5pm to 6am everyday.

ALWAYS COLLECT EGGS 4 X A DAY. NEVER LEAVE EGGS IN THE NESTS FOR THE HENS WILL HAVE A CHANCE TO SIT ON IT. 9AM-11AM-1PM AND 3PM can be practiced.

Always place nest at least 2 feet high.

Cover entrance with dark cloth or black cover.

Always maintain clean bedding and remove dirt and manure

Place nests in dark and quite parts of the hen house.
