My mother Hon. Rhoda Nsibirwa Kalema always told me to pursue a career that I am passionate about.

On this , I'm reminded of her wisdom and encouragement throughout my journey as a veterinarian and conservationist. In this photo, I took her to visit the gorillas for the first time in 2000 because she believed in my dream. You can read more about it in my memoir 🦍📚https://linktr.ee/dr.gladys

It was wonderful meeting Dr. Chantal Whitten, Associate Veterinarian at Byron Bay Wildlife Hospital and her partner, Dr. Larry Vogelnest, Senior Veterinarian at Taronga Zoo Sydney at the Gorilla Conservation Café in Entebbe.

Dr. Larry used to send drugs for gorillas through Debbie Cox, former Country Manager of JGI when I was setting up the Uganda Wildlife Authority Vet Unit in 1996. Grateful for the connection where we shared amazing stories and insights about each others work!

"Of course where gorillas are, the birds are"!

I was truly honored to be a keynote speaker at the 1st International Conference for Women Birders held at Sheraton Kampala Hotel.

I was inspired by the passion and resilience of female birders from Uganda and around the world and what Mr. Herbert Byaruhanga and everyone has done in the birding community.

We are delighted that RVC alumna Dr Gladys Kalema-Zikusoka has been listed as one of the BBC’s 100 Women 2023. This is a list of 100 inspiring and influential women from around the world.

The BBC reported: “As an award-winning Ugandan vet and conservationist, Gladys Kalema-Zikusoka works to save the country's endangered mountain gorillas, whose habitat is being eroded by climate change. She is founder and CEO of Conservation Through Public Health, an NGO that promotes biodiversity conservation by enabling people, gorillas and other wildlife to co-exist, while improving their health and habitat. After three decades, she has helped increase the number of mountain gorillas from 300 to about 500, which was enough to downgrade them from critically endangered to endangered.”
