Honored to once again mount a giant whitetail for Jason Tarn. I’ve mounted several impressive deer for him over the years, but this one has it all. Jason wanted this 213” muzzleloader deer on a pedestal, but left the pose, style, and everything else up to me.

The early season short haired cape allowed a lot of detail on the form to he seen. Included on the top of the base were a couple of sheds from the deer that Jason had picked up the last couple of years.

It’s been a while since I’ve posted but I’m cranking on deer mounts from last season. If you haven’t heard from me yet, please be patient. Capes returned from my tannery mid June, and I’ve gotten a good start, but I have around 60 shoulder mounts to do yet.

Well, time definitely got away from me as the rifle season entered the last full week, and I was busy skinning and fleshing. For that reason I’m choosing two merchandise winners to catch up for the missed weekly post a week ago.
Congratulations to everyone who was successfull with harvesting a trophy. For the hardcore archery hunters who still have a tag to fill , good luck as the season winds down.

My daughter Kabreyan was limited on time to hunt this year as she’s been at K-State. She was able to come home just a few times to archery hunt but had no success. She got to come home the last weekend of the rifle season, and went on the final Saturday with yet again her archery equipment with no luck. On a whim, I mentioned with one day left, she should just take a rifle on the final evening and see what happens. Well, it happened!!!! She was successfull with harvesting a mature buck. I can say it’s been over twenty years since anyone in my family has harvested a deer with anything other than archery equipment. Let’s just say she didn’t seem to mind, but she didn’t like how loud the shot was. For her, it’s all about jerkey and pepper sticks!!!

The rifle season is in full swing and many of you have been successful. As hunters we’ve all experienced the highs and low of a deer season. Simply said, a majority of us press on during the course of a season for the sport that we love.
Tonight was definitely a high that I was privileged to witness. A young girl, Rilee Burgett a 13 year old 7th grader from Chapman harvested her first deer ever , and brought it to my shop to mount. As I caped it out for her, she watched every step.
In her excitement of the whole ordeal, she then proceeded to give herself a “war paint “ face from her deer. You could tell she was excited, and yet intrigued as she looked over her deer time and time again. This is why many of us hunt!!!!

Happy Thanksgiving!! Enjoy the rest of your holiday weekend. After putting in a lot of time in the tree stand the first half of November, I was fortunate to tag out on a good mature deer. My son Kieryan , and good hunting friend Mario Vasquez also both had success during the same time frame. Sometimes it takes some luck to make it all happen when you get a chance, , and most hunters will tell you that they’ll take it every time. Definitely thankfull !!! ( Pictures below)

The peak of archery season continues as the rut seems to be in full swing, however the Fur Bearing hunting and trapping season has also now begun.
Be sure to take extra care of all potential fur animals that you plan on mounting or skinning.

I’ll be selecting a Anderson Taxidermy merchandise winner every week throughout the rest of the year. For a chance, simply Like and Share this post , along with follow this page for a chance to win.

Week 6 : Fur is delicate!! To avoid problems like fur slippage, keep the animal cool upon harvesting and get into a freezer as soon as possible. Do not wash as water creates bacteria !!! Keep out of sunlight as much as possible when transporting especially if in a bag.
Reminder - You must have your fur harvesting license, and bobcats must be tagged by a game warden before they are brought in.
It’s recommended you check your local game warden about their availability for tagging before freezing as the eye and lip area will need to be slit to install the tag. If they can’t get with you within a day go ahead and freeze. They will then give instructions on thawing the head area to install the tag.

Week 4: Hunters have other options, other than just shoulder mounts to display their trophies. Pack mounts (shown below) are becoming more popular for the individual who already has several shoulder mounts. A pack mount, can give the appearance that your stepping back in time by having a caped out buck strapped to a wooden back pack for the haul out of the woods.

Soft tan flat hides (shown below) are also popular for laying out flat on the floor, on a table, or over an old rocking chair.

Week 3. Proper caping and preparation is essential for a quality mount. More is better!!!! A key is to make sure that you have enough cape length, and that the armpit and brisket area is in tact.
To be safe start tube skinning at the last rib and work your way forward towards the neck and head area. When you get to the arm pit , and brisket area, I’ve went ahead and personally removed the front legs on the upper leg area. This area you continue tube skinning and slip the cape over the leg stump ( just like taking off a t-shirt ).
Continue tube skinning up the neck area until you get to the base of the head, and or the skin gets too tight for you to continue. Cut off through the neck and bring it to me and I’ll finish caping off the head.
If youreally unsure how to do it , and or don’t want to cut something wrong, bring your deer to my shop and I’ll cape it off the body for you.

Don’t worry about blood or mud on the cape.
Do not spray or wash off !!! Water is one of the first and major causes for bacteria growth, and a major cause for hair slippage. The cape will become clean in the tanning process.

See the pictures for reference .

!!!!! Attention !!!’ I’m always looking for extra mature buck capes. (Especially archery rutted deer). Think of it as if I’m reimbursing you for your deer tag this season 💵. ( Condition, quality, and size of cape will all be factors in credit amount ).

Finished up this beast of a horse ( I mean deer) for Shane Hocker from Abilene. In my 25 years of taxidermy this is probably the largest bodied deer that I’ve put together. I ordered the largest form I could use, and it almost wasn’t big enough for the cape. Mounted on a semi-sneak left turn. Thanks once again Shane

Another deer mount coming for one of my kids!!! Kids are expensive😁. My son Kieryan shot this deer with his bow last week. His second bow buck, and largest to date. Whitetails are tough. Although the shot was back, he still double lung’d him. We found the arrow immediately covered, but backed out for the evening, after not finding a lot of blood. Went back the next morning and 16 hours after shooting him, we jumped him in his bed and were lucky enough to get another finishing arrow in him. As seen in the background of the picture, he expired right next to a line of cedar trees that he more than likely had been rubbing on.

Just a caping reminder to all who are thinking about shoulder mounting their deer. More is good!!!!
See the photo reference for where to cut. I always say, start at the last rib and skin forward. Be careful , and be sure to include the brisket area and the arm pockets between the front legs.

I always said that there’d never be a fish in my shop. Welllll at least not a real one. My daughter Kabreyan has now at least done a couple replicas after attending and learning hands on at this years World Show. Literally while attending a seminar, a well known National Fish taxidermist and judge , Mr Jim Perkins from Wisconsin handed her the mount he was working on for the seminar and had her start painting it. He personally instructed her for for about 20 minutes and was impressed by her artistic talent. He then even offered for us to make the trip to Wisconsin to his studio if she wanted to learn more. Let’s just say that giving her this confidence, cost me money at the show. I wound up buying fish replicas, another new air brush and paints that I wasn’t planning on buying while there. Needless to say , in my opinion the ones she has done so far look really good. She’s even already sold one of them. 💸💸💸. Pictured are her Largemouth Bass, Crappie, and her scale tip painting on the seminar piece at the world show.
