You have a heart to help others! And now your dog can help, too 🐾 Kong Company has shared how your dog can donate blood to save other dog’s lives!

Pet blood banks play a crucial role in providing lifesaving transfusions for animals in need, yet many pet owners are unaware of their existence and importance until faced with a medical emergency.

Yes, dog sociability is a spectrum. Most dogs are dog selective!

People don’t click with every person they meet, and dogs don’t become best friends with every dog they meet. Being dog selective isn’t just ok. It’s normal.

Gracie is a Happy Hounds And Beyond graduate that needs a home! Please share to help find her perfect match!

Gracie needs a new home! This gorgeous gal is a 29 lb Australian Shepherd who is four years old. She was adopted from us two years ago but needs a new home now because she has made it clear that she needs to be the ONLY PET in the home. She is okay with other dogs out in public but she cannot live with other dogs or cats. If you are seeking a perfect dog as your one and only fur-child, please consider Gracie!

Here is her story…

Hi. My name is Gracie. My humans also call me Goose and Goosey, I like all three names and will come running when called. I am a teddy bear trapped inside a dog costume. My life began a little rough. I was owned by a breeder for my first two years. Since I could not have puppies I was eventually surrendered to SOHFGA. I was quickly adopted by my family who has a SOHF alumni sister dog. Everything was going fine, but lately my past trust issues with other dogs is causing us issues and I am beginning to fight with my sister. My parents are doing their best to protect us and teach us to get along, but we are not getting along anymore. Yes, we even had a professional behaviorist come to help but even she agreed that the best thing for me is to find a home where I can be the only pet. My humans say love me and only want what is best for me and my sister. They are devastated to have to give me up and want me to go to a home that will show me as much love as they are giving me now.

I am a herding dog and have a lot of energy sometimes. I like walks, backyard playtime with my humans and interactive training games. I also like downtime and sitting or sleeping on laps. I love to share my toys. My favorite ones are balls, squeaky stuffed animals and nylabones. I am totally housetrained and crate trained. I might be a little shy or nervous meeting new people but I warm up very quickly. I have a fenced in yard that I love but would also do well on a leash for potty time. I do require a lot human touch, petting and snuggling so it would be nice to have a family or person who can spend a lot of time with me. Also, please be advised that I require a prescription type of dog food because my tummy is sensitive. I have a prescription from the vet for Purina Gastro-Intestinal kibble and treats which can be purchased online and shipped to your home.

I am a wonderful girl and I will truly be your best friend. If you are interested in meeting me, please send an application to SOHF at www.SOHFGA.com.

Resilience is the ability to experience hardship and successfully adapt to, or recover quickly from it. During adolescence, it can sometimes seem that a dog has little resilience. The neurobiology of adolescence is fascinating, with some key events that occur at this critical time of brain development, including motor skills, how the individual processes information day to day, and the ability to regulate emotions. Understanding these processes gives us an understanding of, and greater compassion for, why and how behavior can fluctuate at this life stage.

If you’re feeling frustrated or overwhelmed by your adolescent dog, take a breath and remember this period is temporary. 😮‍💨

Does your dog carry things when they are excited?

03/28/2024

Fatigue starts long before your dog is laying down panting heavily, squinting and with their tongue on the ground …
Understanding and recognizing early signs of fatigue is key to keeping our dogs successful in training, and their bodies safe.
The longer you train, the higher the chance that your dog will experience:
🏋️ physical fatigue (tired body)
🤯 mental fatigue (tired mind - too much information)
❤️‍🩹 emotional fatigue (tired mind - too much stress/excitement)
Or often a combination of these!
The subtle signs can be easy to miss. And if we don’t stop training when our dog first tells us they had enough, things usually go downhill fast …
Be observant and look out for the following:

1️⃣ Disengagement
If your dog has been happy and enthusiastic during your session and suddenly disengages, sniffs the ground or wanders off, chances are they had enough. Do not keep pushing them to train … it will likely not be successful.
2️⃣ Overarousal
Your dog was in a focused state of mind, but suddenly “spins out of control”? Even though over-excitement may look like excess energy to us, it can actually be a sign that the dog needs a break! Some dogs “stress up” (become MORE crazy as they get tired).
3️⃣ Fidgeting
Your dog was doing well (for example by staying in a Sit Stay), but suddenly starts adding “random” behaviors? Stepping in place, scratching, sniffing themselves etc. are all signs that your dog is getting tired.
4️⃣ Regression
Your dog was doing well at the beginning of the training session, but seems to actually get *worse* as time goes on? This is a very common and often overlooked sign of fatigue.
We see it especially in reactive dog training, where dogs are fine at the beginning of a session, but exposure near their threshold and trigger stacking makes them more and more stressed throughout.
Don’t ignore these first signs. If you try to push through it, your dog will not magically recover (mentally, physically or emotionally) … but is much more likely to keep making mistakes, rehearse unwanted behaviors or even get injured!
Which of the above signs of fatigue do you see most often in your dog?

Great stepping stone for muzzle training dogs!

Great stepping stone for muzzle training dogs!

*Please note, using this muzzle will not prevent a bite. It is to aid in the muzzle training process*

Here is a great example of the "false muzzle". The front of the muzzle is cut off to allow easier/quicker treat delivery, or even fetch/tug/toy play; this can really help with the desensitization process for some dogs. This is a GREAT stepping stone towards your end goal of your dog being able to happily wear their muzzle while out in the world.

Thanks for the photo !!

“As a friend and supporter of Beagle Freedom Project, I have personally been a part of the amazing rescues it has achieved. It’s shocking to think about what happens in product testing labs across the country and how many are completely unaware. Beagle Freedom Project is not only exposing the truth about the horrors of testing on animals, they are working to shut down the industry. Today we are celebrating a major milestone as they shut down an enormous animal testing laboratory Oklahoma, saving over 200 dogs and cats, and transform the 30 acre property into a place of love and freedom.” Ross McCall, Actor, Band of Brothers

Thank you, Ross, for your kind words. You have been such an amazing supporter, friend, and advocate for our animals. We are so lucky to have you as part of the Beagle Freedom Project Family!
