Important announcement regarding ALL international travel (including Canada) with your dog(s)!
The CDC is imposing new rules regarding international travel with your dog(s). These new rules regarding dog importation take effect August 1, 2024. “Importation” as defined by the CDC refers to bringing any dog into the U.S. regardless of their permanent address.
As we have several clients who travel to Canada with their dogs for vacations and other trips, we felt it important to highlight the new requirements as they apply to ALL dogs traveling back into the United States from Canada and including car travel.
Previously, all that was needed for a dog to return to the U.S. was a current Rabies certificate. This will no longer be sufficient!
The new rules require the following:
- The dog must be 6 months of age or older. Therefore you will not be able to travel with your puppies younger than 6 months of age as they will not be allowed back into the country.
- The dog must be microchipped with an ISO compliant microchip.
- The dog must have a Rabies vaccine administered by a USDA accredited veterinarian.
- The microchip must be administered prior to the Rabies vaccine.
- The dog must have a special certificate issued by a USDA veterinarian and endorsed by the USDA.
Currently none of our veterinarians are USDA accredited. Dr. Lane is in the process of becoming a USDA accredited veterinarian. We will let you know when this is complete.
These rule changes present some challenges. We will keep you informed as additional information is released. If you have any questions in the meantime, please reach out to the clinic and we will do our best to answer them!
