Baltimore Free Farm Baltimore Free Farm is an egalitarian collective of gardeners and activists who aim to provide access to healthy food for all.

Please contact us at [email protected] We believe that hierarchical systems of organizing are damaging to our lives, our minds and our relationships. In an egalitarian collective, we do our best to create an environment where everyone is valued equally. We value the input of all collective members and encourage honest discussion. Our decision making process is consensus-based and we

allow the voices of all members to be heard. We manage several garden spaces that grow food, build soil and enhance biodiversity. Donation Link: https://host.nxt.blackbaud.com/donor-form/?svcid=renxt&formId=2f435520-61b1-4b4f-b0bd-77bff662f466&envid=p-Qoz_S73g_Uq_9rloqlKq1g&zone=usa

We have rooms open!

$480-580/mo includes: utilities & internet; onsite laundry; access to multiple common spaces (kitchens, bathrooms, lounge areas, yards, gardens); easy parking; light rail, The Avenue, and a public pool all 2-3 blocks away; community-minded housemates and activities; and even some free food!

At the moment we're open to straightforward rentals that don't carry any community responsibilities, but ideally we seek to add new members to the co-op who'd be active in community life and mutual aid.

Any support you can give will go to helping us improve our space and put on more events! Consider donating! We are an all volunteer run collective and community garden space organized non-hierarchically and run on pretty much a shoestring budget. All produce goes back to those who volunteer (and excess sometimes goes to food rescue operations). We strive to have a cooperative gardening and learning space available to all especially those in the city that don't have time to maintain individual plots. We also operate a seed library and have a seed swap every year. We taking donations of old seed. Contact us at [email protected] or if you want to make a monetary donation see link below.

Ken is one of the founders of the Baltimore Free Farm, and is - hands down - one of the best people around. If you are able, please share and/or donate to help him offset the cost of upcoming dental work.

🗣️ Healthcare, including teeth care, is a human right! We look forward to the day that we don’t have to crowdfund to keep us alive and able to eat. Until that day, we have each other. Thank you, community, for stepping in.

Seeking residents who are interested in community! We are looking for one resident for Horizontal Housing and one resident in an adjacent/related house with the option to participate as much as interested. See more information about Horizontal Housing and the Baltimore Free Farm below -

"Horizontal Housing is a housing cooperative with strong ties to the urban farming and food justice groups in Baltimore, seeking residents who are passionate about community living and events, urban farming, and/or food justice.
Our members volunteer with Baltimore Free Farm, Food Not Bombs and Food Rescue Baltimore, amongst which we maintain multiple gardens and chickens, cook and distribute food to the wider community, and host events in our backyard garden area.
We appreciate applicants who are comfortable with living in communal settings and are open to sharing food and tasks around the houses and gardens. Nonprofit, community organizing, mediation, and gardening/agricultural experience is appreciated as well, but feel free to apply without experience if you feel you would enjoy and have good qualities to contribute to the houses and community.

Packaging up the Pinkeye Purple Hull cowpeas (aka southern peas, crowder peas, and/or black-eyed peas) for our Baltimore launch of the One Seed One Community project this Saturday.

Join us! Space is still available for our Seed Saving for City People workshop this Saturday, April 29th, from 3:30-5:30pm in the basement of St. Luke’s Church in the Hampden neighborhood of Baltimore City. This workshop is donation-based, no one turned away for lack of funds. You do have to register via Eventbrite to get all the handouts and class materials ahead of time. Link in comments.

We’ll discuss the ethics of the seed industry, why we save seed, basic plant reproduction and botany useful for seed savers, and lots and lots of practical information to get people started. We’ll offer some attainable seed saving goals, and sign you up for our community cowpea grow-out if you’re game. We hope to see you there 🌱💚🌎

BALTIMORE, Let’s grow some cowpeas!

Help us grow out locally-adapted seed for the Baltimore Seed Commons to distribute to our neighbors in 2024. Local food starts with local seed! If we all grow a small row of plants and save their seed, when we combine our seed harvest, we have enough diverse and locally-adapted seeds to share!

Join our ONE SEED ONE COMMUNITY project for 2023!

This year we will grow ‘Pinkeye Purple Hull’ cowpeas. Cowpeas are an important ancestral and cultural food for Africans and the African diaspora, including Southern Black Americans. This variety of cowpea, also known as a black-eyed pea, grows well here in Baltimore, reasonably disease and pest resilient, easy to save seeds from, and grows beautiful deep purple seed pods.

GUIDELINES
* Each participant will be provided with approximately 20 seeds. We ask that you reserve about 4’x2’ of row space, or similar, to grow 12-20 plants. We ask that you grow no other cowpeas (Vigna unguiculata) this year - or to separate different varieties of cowpeas by at least 20 feet - in order to maintain proper isolation distance.
* We will have an email list for the participants throughout the growing season with reminders and support for our shared project.
* Ultimately we hope to fill a quart mason jar with our combined saved seeds which will multiply our current seed stock significantly. This year we will not have enough plants to eat from AND save seeds. We ask that you save as many seeds as possible from your cowpea harvest: keep a portion for yourself to plant next year and donate another portion to our combined community harvest.
* Sign up and receive free ‘Pinkeye Purple Hull’ cowpea seeds at our upcoming seed-saving class on 4/29 at St. Luke’s Church on the Avenue in Hampden, Baltimore. Register on EventBrite for Baltimore Free Farm’s Seed Saving for City People workshop. Link in comments.
* If you can’t make it to the workshop and are local to Baltimore City, email [email protected] to get on the waitlist for leftover cowpea seeds. Alternatively, you can purchase a packet of your own ‘Pinkeye Purple Hull, Top Pick Southern Pea’ cowpeas from Southern Exposure Seed Exchange. They are $2.75 a packet plus $3.50 shipping for orders under $10. Please only order this specific variety of cowpea from this specific seller for our project this year. Send us an email to let us know you purchased seeds and are participating, and we’ll put you on our list 🌱💜🌱

Know anyone in need of a walk-in fridge? We need to get rid of ours ASAP (need a plan by this Saturday for imminent removal).

The structure (wall panels, door, etc.; 480 cu ft interior volume) could be free to a good home, but we'd like to get fair compensation back for the refrigeration unit itself, which was bought new 3yrs ago for $3400 (plus installation). It's plausible that we could give the structure to one party and sell the unit to another.

We’re excited to have our compost system up and running again. Feeling inspired by Baltimore Compost Collective led by Marvin Hayes in South Baltimore. Brenda Platt with the Institute for Institute for Local Self-Reliance and Marvin recorded this composting webinar the other day and we would love to share it with you. Our volunteer labor is only so much to turn the pile, so at this time we are not accepting donations outside of our current Rescue Baltimore network. Watch this discussion, be inspired to start your own compost, and see what bright future lies ahead for composting in Baltimore. From backyard composting and community projects to municipal curbside service and private businesses, we could be taking steps to sequester more of that good ole carbon back into the soil instead of into the atmosphere in the form of methane or carbon dioxide.
