At Animal Haven Veterinary Center, your pet's health and well-being is our primary concern, and we know that the health-care partnership between an owner and a veterinarian is extremely important. We will clearly present to you all possible treatment options and together we will choose the best therapeutic option for your pet. To support this belief, we will try to explain what is going on with yo

ur pet through verbal client education and handouts in order to detail specific conditions we may have diagnosed your pet with and procedures (such as blood work) we may have done or recommended for your pet. We feel this will better enable you to have an understanding of what we are doing and allow you to understand and more fully participate in your pet’s health and veterinary care. We will strive to resolve your pet’s problems in a timely and cost-effective manner while minimizing discomfort and providing compassionate care for your family’s friend. Animal Haven Veterinary Center got its start in 1999 as a mobile practice. Dr. Brady and Dr. Fagraeus purchased a 26-foot mobile unit that allowed them to provide complete veterinary care, including surgeries and x-rays. In 2004, a stationary hospital (located on route 40 in Bear) was added. Most appointments are seen at our stationary location, but housecalls are still offered. Housecalls are done by one of the doctors and a technician coming into your home to examine your pet.Because we have been doing housecalls for over 10 years now, we are very accustomed to the unique aspect of conducting housecalls and are able to provide exceptional care to pets through our housecall service. Owners with multiple pets or those finding it difficult to travel to a stationary clinic, will find that our willingness to continue providing housecalls provides a viable alternative to traditional in-hospital visits. Animal Haven Veterinary Center provides all veterinary services from routine examinations to sick patient care, as well as surgical and dental services. We are extremely excited and proud of our practice and the MANY ways we are able to provide complete, compassionate care to our patients and their owners!!!

The news is everywhere about the “strange respiratory infection and coughing” that we are seeing in dogs. Here are some tips from the American Veterinary Medical Association to limit exposure. Although, we have seen it in dogs that do not go to boarding, day care, grooming etx so the latest thought is that it may be bacterial and not viral. The bottom line is, we just don’t know yet what it is nor how to best treat it etx.

What we can tell you clinically from our observations is: animals who have been vaccinated and are current on BOTH Bordatella AS WELL AS Canine Influenza vaccinations seem to get an annoying cough but are not experiencing the more serious pneumonia findings. Please make sure your dog is up-to-date on BOTH of these vaccinations! 🐾❤️🐾

As more cases of canine respiratory disease pop up throughout the U.S., we want to share a few best practices to ensure your dog stays healthy and safe this holiday season.

AVAILABLE FOR ADOPTION: NAIA!!

NAIA (now 8 months old) is a former ALWAYS A FRIEND adoptee (one of Lainey’s puppies named IPA). Part of the contract between ALWAYS A FRIEND and adopters is that adoptees will be returned to us if the adopter cannot keep them. When NAIA was returned to us, she was exhibiting very concerning aggressive behaviors, truth is, we could not even safely approach her (we can share the specifics of why she was demonstrating these behaviors with potential adopters - none of them seem to be her “fault”). Several days of patience, rewarding times when she showed postive behaviors, and established boundaries, and this is her now!!!

We are looking for a new forever home for her. We will be extremely selective and will only adopt her out to KNOWN adopters (well-known clients or friends/family of well-known clients and someone who has experience owning guard-dog breeds etc).

Call 302-326-1400 and leave a message with your name and phone number if you are interested in adopting NAIA and meet the criteria to be considered for adopting her. Someone from our adoption team will then contact you. Remember, NAIA deserves a dedicated owner who will give her the time and attention she deserves and we are determined to find that for her. So, if you do not meet the minimum criteria of being KNOWN to AHVC or having a KNOWN CLIENT of AHVC RECOMMEND YOU for her adoption, you will not be considered.

It is with great sadness that we update Cai’s case. Unfortunately, he passed away early this morning. Once the object removed from his stomach dried out, it was obvious that it was “woody” and it was identified as an acorn. Acorns are toxic to dogs and can cause symptoms within hours of ingestion. However the symptoms are fairly vague (diarrhea, inappetence, just not feeling well) and toxicity can be very quick. Cai’s liver and kidney values spiked overnight and he bagan having seizures. The effects of the toxin (called tannins). Sadly, there is no antidote for acorn toxicity and the treatment is supportive care with IV fluids and symptomatic medications and mega prayers that they can overcome the toxicity.

Hopefully, telling Cai’s story can save the life of another dog. Our hearts are broken and we are so sad for his loss and the heartbreak for his family. Run freely over the rainbow bridge seeet Cai🌈🐾❤️

Cai wants to tell all of his friends a valuable lesson he learned today:

“Don’t eat nuffin that will get stuck in ya and make ya sick and have ta have surgery ta get ‘‘em out”.

Dr. Brady did emergency surgery today to remove this object that was blocking his stomach and intestines and making him very sick. Identification of the object is still being determined - stay tuned!
