First set of clinic dates out there! Bring a horse, use one of ours or come audit. I personally love to audit because it takes the pressure off while you get to absorb so much!

Just a few clips from our clinic this weekend. The focus was “lunging”. AKA… can you move their shoulders, hindquarters, and ask them for more or less energy. Much harder than it seems!
It was such a blast and I’m so proud of everyone’s progress.

Clicker training my new baby horse. I was originally planning to start R+ sessions with her after she settled in for a few months but ironically her food aggression needed to be addressed. Here is a little compilation of the last few weeks.

Abril carrying me into 2023 like 🦄. This is my first horse that I’ve started from the ground up. With no training to undo she’s shown me how easy this process can be. She gives me the most amazing feeling of her taking me with her… “I’m just along for the ride” type of feeling. In this video you see us trot for maybe 10-15 seconds but there are so many behaviors that we’ve solidified to get there. I’m so excited to see what we accomplish in this next year. To see how she progresses and develops her own way of going.

The snow was awesome… the freezing rain, not so much. It’s been pouring buckets all day and the temp is not budging above 40. It’s really quite miserable 😂 but the horses are toasty in their rain sheets and enjoying their grass. We are all settling into the new routine nicely 😊

Since getting to our new home I’ve just been playing around with the horses and trying to make them feel comfortable. This clip is after I decided to bail on my plan to introduce Abril to the indoor. She was so stressed and after a few minutes I decided we needed to find something else to do. We made our way to the outdoor where she is 100 yards or so from the rest of the herd. Not right next to each other but at least in same proximity. She settled relatively fast and we were able to experiment with some new stuff! I’ve never even asked her to go over or down anything before. What a wonderful horse.

Day 10: 360 miles from Bethel PA to Bedford MA. We made it safe and sound! The horses are so happy to be here. They still are wary we are going to throw them back in the trailer but they can rest assured, we are here for the foreseeable future.

Day 9: 462 miles from Bristol VA to Bethel PA. I knew our host bred but were weren’t expecting 5 little babies to greet us in the barn. They were so curious and cute. I think one might fit in our tack room 😉. Our horses are doing great, they can see each other in these stalls so they are feeling secure. It’s our last night of traveling and what a great one. Our host made us some delicious dinner and we got to chat all about horses. Off to MA next!

Day 7: 395 miles from Sallisaw OK to Jackson TN. The day went well. While we gave the horses a rest we had some killer barbecue for lunch. Our layover in TN was nice, the horses had a field which is our preference. It rained a bit over night but it was so warm we just left them out. So nice to be wearing just a sweatshirt. Onto Virginia! Getting close 🤗

Day 6: 418 miles from Amarillo TX to Sallisaw OK. So nice for the weather to warm up and travel in the temperatures I had planned for. We stayed at a lovely KOA. The horses had a nice field to run around in and we had a cute little cabin. Poor Foxy got a scratch on his eye either last night or in the trailer today. It’s weaping and I can tell it hurts. He is getting eye ointment a few times a day and is such a good boy about it. He will ride in a fly mask tomorrow and we will give him a little bit of banamine to help with the inflammation. Onto Tennessee!

Day 5: 364 miles from western NM to Amarillo, Texas. We decided to pick up our pace since the horses are handling travel well. We were supposed to do about 250 miles but now that we have a few days under our belt we know we can do 350-450 easily. This way we are able to get to Boston in 4 or 5 days. I know the horses will appreciate getting to their new home sooner and nick and I would like to sleep in a heated house. You know it’s cold when Nick is wearing a hat, let alone two layers 🥶. Onto Oklahoma next.

Day 4: 247 miles from Flagstaff AZ to Grants NM. The horses got to explore the roping arena until dark. Overnight we had to put them in stalls for the first time and they unfortunately couldn’t see each other very well. They were definitely a bit stressed; in the video you can hear them all calling and see Chanel using her athleticism. After a little bit of time and a mash they all settled down. Thankfully I booked the bunkhouse at this place because it was a frigid 15 degrees at 6am 🥶. Horses still handling the weather well, you can see them rolling in the morning sunshine.

Day 3: Only 147 miles to Flagstaff from kingman AZ. We wanted to give the horses a big rest and also give us some time to explore. It was a high wind advisory in the area so I’m so glad we weren’t driving with the trailer all day. Nick and I headed to the Grand Canyon while the horses got to play around in our hosts arena. This location had stalls available but we choose to put them in the arena overnight. I can’t speak horse or read their minds but I think they would prefer to be with each other, sharing food and running around together. I wish I took more pictures of our experience here but it’s easy to get lost in the moment.
I woke up last night at about 2am from the gusts of wind hitting our trailer. Unable to get back to sleep I threw on my puffy jacket, boots and headlamp. Climbed down our stairs of hay into the brisk night and walked over the the arena. I could see the reflection of the horses eyes from my headlamp and walked over to them. I said hello, gave them a scratch and felt under their armpits to feel their warmth. Nick and I choose to not blanket them and see how they would handle the weather. They all felt warm and seemed perky, happy to see me. I walked over to their water and broke the ice that had formed. They all followed, and drank immediately. I just stood there in the darkness with them, under Orion’s Belt. Feeling happy that they are doing well, eating and drinking and adjusting well to the cold. Adjusting much better than nick and I… I walked back to the trailer, took off my top layer and got under 4 blankets.

Day 2: 350 miles to Kingman, AZ from Bakersfield. Long day again but at least we got in before sundown. The horses traveled well and settled into their little pens for the night. Nick and I got a hot shower, warm dinner and good sleep. Onto flagstaff next.

We made it (barely) to our first pit stop in Bakersfield CA. I really think I put my foot in my mouth with my trailer post because Abril (the dunn) would not get in the f-ing trailer. We had taken her to the vet earlier in the week smoothly but this time it was a hard no. We had to result to using a rope behind her and that worked… but 2 hours later. So we were way behind in schedule and didn’t get in until 9:30pm. Thankfully our host was beyond accommodating and also had a lovely place for our horses to stay. Here are the horses running around this morning clearly having fun! After they got their zoomies out we haltered them to load up. Took less than 20 mins this morning so things are looking up. We are on the road now heading to Arizona.
