Gorgeous plain-bellied water snake we found awhile ago.

Scientific name: Nerodia erythrogaster alta

These guys often get mistaken for cottonmouths, but one identifier that can help discern water snakes from venomous snakes in the US is those vertical bands along their mouths.

Would you have been able to identify this species if seen in the wild?

(Edited to add photos of venomous species specifically in Arkansas. More info on these snakes can be found at herpsofarkansas.com)

This Western Wormsnake has quite the story.

Picked up a cow skull and leg bones from my dad's land this past saturday and had them in the trunk of my car. We had opened the trunk days later and noticed the little guy. He must have been in the cow skull and then migrated and tried to crawl into this super tiny hole in the leg bone but unfortunately ended up stuck. There was no guiding him through or getting him to back out even with the use of oils. It was super snug. We were able to break the bone without harming him and freed him. He stayed overnight with us to make sure he was hydrated and was then set free.

Important lesson: Thoroughly check your animal bones you collect in fields. 😅

🐍 Some extra info on this species:

• Worm snakes are a small species of snake. Adults are usually from 19–28 cm (7.5–11 in) in total length; however, the maximum recorded total length is 37.5 cm (14.8 in).

• Worm snakes are fossorial, and spend the vast majority of time buried in loose, rocky soil, or under damp forest leaf litter.

• The worm snake's diet consists almost entirely of earthworms, but it will also consume soft-bodied insects.
