The CDC recently issued some broad changes for pets coming back to the USA that affect DOGS specifically for both Export and Import.

Effective August 1st, 2024, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) will implement significant revisions to their guidelines concerning the importation of DOGS. These changes are essential for all parties involved in the importation or transportation of animals to ensure compliance and avoid any potential disruptions.

Key takeaways:
1. These changes only apply to dogs.

2. Dogs must be over 6 months old to return (keep this in mind for owners traveling on vacation with the intent to return).

3. Dogs must have an ISO compliant microchip.

4. Dogs must be vaccinated for rabies with a killed vaccine after microchip implant (anything before is not recognized, but both a 1 year and 3 year rabies vaccine are recognized).

5. 2-10 days before arrival to the US, the OWNER must submit a notification to the CDC for which a submission receipt will be generated and used to enter the US—this form will be available in mid July but includes pet information and photos of pet for verification purposes.—this is a free form for submittal, and owners will receive an automated response, so no waiting for someone to approve a “permit”.

6. Appear healthy upon re-entry.

For pets that were exported with an endorsed USDA export certificate, this can be used for re-import until July 31, 2025 for high risk rabies countries and 1-3 years for other countries, or to the expiration date of the rabies on the certificate whichever is sooner. After that date, they will either need a certification of USA received rabies vaccination that was issued prior to leaving the US or an export certificate from the country of departure (at client cost).

Common countries that people travel to with pets that are considered high risk rabies are Belize, Brazil, Columbia, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Peru, Haiti, Philippines, Thailand etc.

For our neighbor countries (Canada and Mexico) and others that don’t require an endorsed certificate for export (Bahamas, Bermuda, Kuwait, etc) the only option for easy re-entry is to get a “Certification of U.S.-Issued Rabies Vaccination” via VECHS submittal which is Endorsed by the USDA. This must be submitted by a USDA accredited veterinarian and is good for as many Border crossings to the US as long as the rabies vaccine is valid. Do note that the rabies (and Microchip if needed) must be administered at least 28 days prior to departure to be eligible for the Certification of U.S.-Issued Rabies Vaccination.

You can read more about it here, but there may be further revisions.

As we endure this hot weather, it’s important to us that your fur babies stay cool, as well! Here are some tips to help them stay cool this summer.

- Leave your pet in a cool, well-ventilated area, with access to fresh water to reduce the risk of heat exposure.

- Limit the time they spend outside.

- Create enticing ways for them to drink water: try freezing broth into ice cubes and adding them to their water bowl.

Some signs of hyperthermia (heat stroke) in your pet (but not limited to):

Dogs: excessive panting, lethargy, restlessness, unsteady on feet, large amounts of saliva from nose and/or mouth, vomiting/diarrhea & gums turning dark red (lack of oxygen).

Cats: lethargy, vomiting & open mouth breathing/panting.

A dog’s primary way of regulating their body temperature is by panting. For cats, opening-mouth breathing/panting is a sign of distress.

We lost one of our beloved daycare dogs Duke. You either knew him for his handsome long ears or the slobber on your dogs head after a day with Sir Duke. He left a paw print on all of our hearts.

VETERINARY RECEPTIONIST WEEK! 🐾🥳
Today marks the week where we get to celebrate and thank our incredible Veterinary Receptionists. Receptionists are a pet family's first and last point of contact during veterinary visits. The communication and care they provide is invaluable and we simply couldn’t function without the hard work, dedication, and support that they give on a daily basis!

If you're in the office this week make sure to tell them what a great job they are doing. They have one of the hardest ones here!!

Thank you for all that you do!
We simply couldn’t do it without you! ♥️🐾

As everyday prices continue to rise, we understand the challenges faced by many pet owners in our community. To ensure that no pet goes hungry, we have partnered with the Bethel Area Food Shelf to help bring in cat and dog food donations. We encourage anyone who is able to, to please drop off their donations in the designated box located in our main lobby. Food donations must be in new/unopened condition. We thank you in advance for your donations to this wonderful organization! 🐱🐾🐶

Hello CAH clients,

We wanted to inform you of our current policy for International Health Certificates if you plan to travel abroad with your four legged family member. The first step is to schedule a consultation with our clinic manager two to three months prior to your travel date. At this consultation, we will provide you with the necessary resources for you to research and complete all requirements for travel to your destination. Part of this planning will then be to schedule an appointment at the appropriate time for a health exam with one of our doctors (for some destinations, two appointments must be scheduled with a Doctor). At the appointment with the Doctor, she will examine your pet and, if they are healthy, will sign the paperwork. ALL the paperwork MUST be completed by you prior to this appointment or else she will not be able to sign it, and your pet may not be able to travel with you.

It is a lot of work to prepare to travel internationally with your pet, and all destinations have different requirements which can be very complicated. There are companies that specialize in doing all of the paperwork and preparation for you - all you have to do is show up for the Doctor's appointment! Some options for this service are:

1. https://www.jetapetinternational.com/
2. https://www.airanimal.com
3. https://www.petmovers.com/

If you have any questions or concerns, please give our office a call at 802-234-5999.

Thank you,
The Country Animal Hospital Team
