After a long hiatus, the Upstate Tick Testing Laboratory is now again open. If any ticks are found attached to your or your pets, you are able to submit them to this laboratory which can tell you which infectious diseases the tick is carrying.

Ticks will be identified by species before testing for pathogens. Irrespective of the species, all ticks will be tested for 16 pathogens using our lab-developed universal tick-borne pathogen assay.  With our assay, we  can detect the following pathogens:

We are seeing more pets with Lyme disease since it is becoming more prevalent in our local tick population. If you have questions about how Lyme disease might impact your dogs/horses, consider attending the following webinar hosted by the Central New York Lyme & Tick-borne Disease Alliance.

This webinar and Q&A session will be presented by Dr Douglas Wojcik, a veterinarian with plenty of experience in handling Lyme disease. Registration fees will be used to support the Alliance's education and outreach initiatives. Funds raised will directly enable the Alliance to expand their community and youth education programs, provide free Tick Kits, and enrich their monthly Support Group for patients and their families.

For more information and to register please check out the link below.

Before all of the holiday festivities kick off, you can refresh yourself on the most commonly encountered pet toxins to help prevent any Christmas disasters.

As a reminder, all photo submissions for our holiday contest are due at 6PM this Monday. Please see our previous post for full details.

Hope you're all getting into the holiday spirit!

12/14/2023

We're holding a holiday pet photo contest! 🐶 You can win a year of Credelio or Interceptor (flea/tick product or dewormer) for one of your pets if you win the vote.

To enter please submit one festive-themed photo of your pet(s) by 6PM on Monday, December 18th. These can be submitted by email to [email protected] with your pets' names and the words "Photo Contest" in the subject line. The photos will then be put up for public vote on our page.

We look forward to seeing all your pet holiday photos! 😻🐍🐢🐰🐭

The fine print: All pets entered in the contest must be active patients in order for us to dispense prescription medications, meaning they must be seen by us at least every 12 months. Please also note that any dogs receiving Interceptor as their prize must have a valid negative heartworm test throughout the 12 month period they are receiving treatment, and the cost of this test is not covered in this contest. The reason for this is because using Interceptor in a potentially heartworm-positive dog can be damaging to that dog's health.

With warmer winter weather we are seeing more and more ticks year round. You can help protect your pets from Lyme disease and other tick-borne illnesses by continuing to provide regular tick preventatives, regardless of season. Contact us if you would like to discuss testing your pets for tick-borne diseases, as well as bringing them up to date with tick treatment.

What to do if one of your family members (furry or otherwise) has been bitten by a tick, and you're worried about the diseases it may be carrying? The nearest tick testing lab is located in Pennsylvania, and for a fee they can test ticks for a variety of bacteria and parasites. Check out the Tick Research Lab below:

To read more about the problem of year-round tick activity, please take a look at the following news article:

Being bitten by an adult tick in winter could mean you or your precious pet are at a higher risk of being infected with Lyme disease, experts say.
