Here they are! Our bird litter of kittens is now in our kitten adoption room and are ready to find their forever homes!

Meet Finch, Hawk, Robin, Sparrow, and Wren!
All 5 kittens came to SPEAK with their mama at only 3 days old with umbilical cords still attached. Luckily mama Chickadee was the BEST mama they (or we!) could ask for and she nursed and helped raise them into the healthy, beautiful and sweet kittens you see today!

They are 9 weeks old, vaccinated for their current age, dewormed and have all received their flea and tick topical treatment. They are scheduled to be spayed/neutered once they have reached the appropriate age.

Their amazing and oh so sweet mama, Chickadee, is scheduled to be spayed next week and will be available for adoption shortly after once she has had time to heal.

We are now accepting adoption applications for these furry and rambunctious younglings. Applications can be found on our website: https://speakanimalhospital.org/forms.html and completed forms may be submitted to our email: [email protected].

05/21/2024

Veterinary hospitals and clinics in New York and across the nation are understaffed and overwhelmed, struggling to meet demands exacerbated by the leftover effects of the COVID pandemic. Some locations are requiring appointments to be made five months in advance. Others are unable to accept new clients at all. This crisis has hit all levels of veterinary care, from general practice to specialists to emergency care. Maureen Luschini, an emergency-care vet in central New York, put it bluntly: “Emergency care cannot be guaranteed for your pets right now. There are simply not enough people to take care of all the sick animals.” By 2030, the U.S. will need nearly 41,000 additional veterinarians and nearly 133,000 credentialed vet techs, according to a recent Mars Veterinary Health report.

“Whoever your vet is, they care, they care about you, they are doing the best they can with what they have to work with,” Silvius said. Please remember: if your veterinarian can’t see you when you need them, it does not mean that they don’t care. They may be in the middle of a surgery that can’t be interrupted. They could be treating a pet in a life-threatening situation. They’re probably stretching themselves to meet the needs of too many pets during this veterinary shortage. Perhaps they need to commit time to vital rest and family responsibilities.

Please be kind. Veterinarians and veterinary support staff are humans with their own limitations and wellness needs. While many vets would like to save pets around-the-clock, we know that this is unrealistic. The profession is slowly learning that over-commitment leads to mistakes, quality erosion, and professional burnout.
Trust that serious issues will be prioritized. Be patient and open to seeking alternate care arrangements in your community. This is the best way to maintain a positive and rewarding relationship with your veterinary team.

For our hospital specifically, please be patient with us as we deal with our own veterinary shortage. This is only temporary as we have a doctor on maternity leave. Please know that we all care deeply about our clients and their pets, and that we are doing the best we can to accommodate as many patients as we can.
Some ways you can help:
1. Schedule preventative care in as far advance as possible.
2. Find an emergency clinic (for true emergencies only!).
3. Show up on time for your appointments – if you are more than 15 minutes late, we will have to reschedule your appointment.
4. Don’t wait to call – if you notice a problem with your pet, don’t wait until the afternoon or a Friday to call for an appointment.

Thank you for your understanding and patience during this time! We truly appreciate each and every one of you!

Exclusive sneak peak!!😍

Prepare yourselves for an overload of cuteness and caffeine this Saturday May 18th during our Coffee Beans and Toe Beans Event!☕🐾

S.P.E.A.K. will be on site at the Front Street Starbucks from 12-3pm to introduce some new furry friends who will be ready to find their furever homes early next week! We will start accepting applications for their adoption at the event and will have forms available to fill out on site. We will be collecting supply and monetary donations for the sanctuary cats in our care, and we will also have information and resources for those unable to adopt but still looking to learn more about rescue and what S.P.E.A.K. does for the community.

We can't wait to see you there!

Beefsteak
2 year old neutered male
Meet the big and sweet Beefsteak!
This handsome ginger cat is a super sweet and affectionate guy who likes the simple things in life. He's an easy-going fella who demands one thing: love and affection! His big doe eyes are mesmerizing and make it extra difficult to walk away and stop petting him. Once you muster the strength to walk away to continue on with your day, Beefsteak will oppose with an incredibly gentle outstretched paw begging you, "Please don't go!" On occasion, Beefsteak can have very brief moments of shyness around new people, but it quickly dissipates and he starts seeking attention almost immediately. He finds comfort in being talked to in those short-lived moments of uncertainty and it quickly snaps him out of his hesitation. Beefsteak enjoys the company of other cats and we feel he has found more of his confidence being around them as well. He likes to be brushed, is a top ranked biscuit maker and while he can be playful at times, he spends the majority of his time lounging and taking it easy.
If you are looking for a sweet and gentle ginger cat, stop by and fall in love with Beefsteak today!

Kojima
9 month old neutered male
Attention all gamers out there: Meet Kojima!
Kojima is a sweet young adult male who came to SPEAK after we believe he was abandoned and found his way to our own sanctuary manager's house. Believed to be a young female in heat at first due to his loud vocalizations, upon further investigation it was discovered Kojima was in fact a little boy, just lost and confused as to where he was and crying out for help. Luckily he was at the right place and was immediately taken in and cared for. Now neutered and fully vetted, Kojima has blossomed into a confident and affectionate cat that is now ready to take on the world! A purrfect wingman for those looking for a young cat companion, Kojima is a great lap cat that will snuggle with you hands free while you’re mastering your favorite game! This unique little guy definitely pushes the boundaries of cuteness with his giant ears and overwhelmingly sweet and endearing personality that you can’t help but fall in love with immediately. Kojima is great with other cats but would also make an awesome buddy for someone just looking for a single furry friend. Kojima is still under a year old, so he will need a home that can keep up with his play drive and allow him positive outlets to drain that young kitty boy energy. So if you’re looking to add the purrfect Player 2 into your life, Kojima may be the cat for you!

Wade Ripple
2 year old neutered male.
Meet Wade Ripple!
Wade is a sweet and spunky young adult male who came into SPEAK with some minor injuries that needed to be cared for. After tending to some wounds and a dental extraction, Wade is now all healed up and ready to find his forever home! Playful and goofy, Wade is also a sweet and affectionate boy who enjoys the company of other cats especially ones that are playful like him! He is also a snuggle bug with other kitty friends, so he would made a great addition to a home looking for a playful yet cuddly companion for their already established cat. Wade can be vocal at times and is not afraid to let you know what he wants when he wants it. Wade did have the fur on his tail shaved down due to the injuries he had upon arrival, but the wounds are healed and his fur is now growing back to its normal state. It's a little bit of a shame though since he has started to enjoy chasing the little floof of fur left at the end of his tail. :P

If you are interested in adopting Wade Ripple or any of our adoptable cats or kittens, please complete our adoption application and send it in for review. Applications can be found on our website www.speakanimalhospital.org and completed forms may be submitted to our email: [email protected]. Thank you!

Elton
5 year old neutered male
Meet Sir Elton!
This gentleman of a cat is a sweet boy with a serious vocal range! A talker for all occasions, Elton always seems to have something to say: is he singing a tune? Forecasting the weather? We aren't sure, but regardless of the message he is trying to convey we are here for it! Like the majority of our shelter cats, Elton was found as an injured stray who was in need of medical attention. Elton was fortunate to come across the right person at the right time who was able to bring him to us for care. Elton is a laid back and sweet boy who spends most of his time lounging and living the easy life now that he is off the streets, but he definitely has a playful side! His favorite toy right now is a little ostrich toy that rattles and he can't get enough of it! Due to the injuries Elton sustained during his time as a stray, he can occasionally favor his one back leg, but it does not hinder him from doing normal cat activities such as jumping and running. The injury is healed, but it did result in him being "slue-footed" when he sits- meaning his back right leg sticks out slightly instead of completely underneath his body when in a seated position. Again, this has not shown to hinder Elton in any way and just makes him that much more unique and special!
Elton enjoys the company of other cats, but would make a great solo companion for someone looking for a cat to fit into an easy-going home environment and laid-back lifestyle.

Frenchy
8 month old spayed female
Meet little miss Frenchy! Companion and sibling of Marty Maraschino, Frenchy here is the longer haired version of her sweet sister. Frenchy is a bit more reserved to new people than Marty is, however she is a total mush once she gets to know you! She gladly opens right up for love and affection once she feels safe and comfortable in your presence. Frenchy loves loves loves other kitty friends and is frequently seen wrestling around with her roommate and fellow adoptable cat, Krrsantan aka Santo! The two of them would make a great pair if you were looking for an awesome dynamic duo to welcome into your home. Santo is more outgoing and immediately social, so having the two of them together would be a great way to help Frenchy to acclimate to a new environment faster. Cats like to watch and observe other cats and their interactions with other animals but also with humans too! This can be especially helpful in situations with introducing two cats into a new home: the confident cat to lead the way and show the shyer one that it's safe and that everything is all good!
If you are looking to give an adorable little floof like Frenchy a little bit of time and a loving furever home, contact our sanctuary staff by emailing us at [email protected]

Marty Maraschino
8 month old spayed female
Meet miss Marty M! This expert window gazer is a shy at first but super sweet young girl looking for a home to call her own. While Marty can be a bit reserved and on the shy side at first introductions, she will still accept pets and love when warming up to new people. She is frequently found bird watching out the window of the adoption room, on the prowl for any squirrels or other tiny creatures frolicking around outside. Marty is a 'touch my butt before my head' kind of girl, so when coming to meet her be sure to introduce yourself first with a slow hand to sniff, then go right in for a good ol' fashion b***y scritch and you'll see how she always comes through with the typical cat elevator butt raise! :P
If you are looking for a playful young female who gets along with other kitties and are willing to give her the adjustment period she may need in a new home, Marty Maraschino may be the kitty for you!

Happy Adopt a Shelter Pet Day!😺

Adopting from a shelter helps provide funds and resources these facilities require on a daily basis to look after the animals in their care, but it also saves the lives of two animals: the one you adopt and the one who takes their place.

Adopting a shelter cat is not only beneficial for the cat, but to us humans as well. Numerous studies have shown that owning a pet can not only be beneficial to your mental health by providing companionship and help alleviate depression, but it can also help lower blood pressure and improve heart health!

Take a moment and think about opening your heart and home to a shelter pet in need. Who knows, you could just find the best friend you've always wanted! 💙💙

Here at SPEAK, we pride ourselves in the compassionate and thoughtful care that our staff members provide not only our clients but their furry friends. Our receptionists are the first piece in conveying this philosophy. They are the first smile and the last wave goodbye in our pet’s healthcare journey.
The term receptionist does not define the role of this team, it goes far beyond phone calls and scheduling appointments. They provide empathy, care, and communication to give our clients and patients the best possible experience.
This position has been made even harder and complicated in todays environment. This receptionist team made up of 6 wonderful ladies do their best to keep spirits high and educate and guide owners when they may need it the most.

Happy veterinary receptionist week to the wonderful staff that we are so grateful for!

We will be closed from 12pm-1pm today, Wed. 4/24 to have lunch to celebrate Veterinary Receptionist Week!

These unsung heroes of the veterinary world are the first point of contact for beloved pets and their worried owners; their caring, professional demeanor can make all the difference. We are so thankful for the loving and caring ladies that run our front office.

Also, a HUGE thank you to Langland's for the delicious celebratory lunch!

King Leonidas
3 year old neutered male
Make way for the King!
King Leonidas is the big orange fluffy boy of your dreams! When King first arrived, he was a bit grumpy as he was covered in ticks, his fur was matted and he was covered in burdocks* all over. Even though he had a beautiful thick orange coat, we could tell it was making him uncomfortable, so the decision was made to give him lion cut while he was under anesthesia for his neuter surgery. What we didn't expect was for King to come out not only looking like a new cat, but he had a new attitude as well, almost as if he was relieved to not have the burden of his matted fur anymore. King's hair is growing back now, so his appearance may change in the coming weeks, but trust us when we say his presence is just as big without his floof in full bloom. King is a mellow guy, playful one minute then snoozing away in the sunshine the next. He is a vocal boy who likes to make his presence known. He is very sweet and likes attention, but isn't super needy and always looking to be in your face all the time. He is fairly independent and while he doesn't mind cohabitating with other kitty friends, he would be more than fine being your one and only cat, alone ruling over his rightful domain.

If you are interested in adopting King Leonidas or any of our adoptable cats or kittens, please complete our adoption application and send it in for review. Applications can be found on our website www.speakanimalhospital.org and completed forms may be submitted to our email: [email protected]. Thank you!

Krrsantan AKA "Santo"- Glow Up Edition!
10 weeks 10 months
Santo came to us back in August of 2023 as a malnourished and underweight 8 week old kitten. Once he had put on some weight he was placed up for adoption in our kitten room among other tiny furry friends. Krrsantan loves other cats and loves his human friends to, so we are stumped as to why he is still here! He has had to compete with some fluffy younger kittens that got chosen over him, but from day 1 of his arrival, Santo was a favorite among SPEAK staff. Santo has grown up in front of our eyes and is now a handsome young adult at 10 months old. He is a SUPER sweet and snuggly boy who loves to dish out kisses and he even likes to snuggle up on laps! He's a playful boy who really enjoys having another playful friend around, so he would make a great addition to a home looking for a cat playmate for their already established feline family member. Krrsantan AKA Santo is such special boy and while we truly love seeing him every day here in the shelter, we know his true place is in a home surrounded by a family who can give him the constant love and attention he rightfully deserves.

Ember Lumen
8 month old spayed female
Meet the sweet and petite little Ember Lumen!
Ember is a dainty little girl with a whole lot of love to dish out! What she lacks in size she makes up for with her gentle and kind demeanor. She's incredibly sweet yet playful and has a great understanding of "soft paws" with no claws when playing around human hands. She's a younger kitty girl under a year old but comes across as a cat wise beyond her years. She loves to play with almost any toy she can get her paws on, and especially loves goofing around inside a tunnel! Ember is sweet not only towards humans, but other cats too! She has more than enough love to give if she was to find a home where she is your one and only furry friend, but she could also easily be added to a home with already established friendly kitty friends.

If you are interested in adopting Ember Lumen or any of our adoptable cats or kittens, please complete our adoption application and send it in for review. Applications can be found on our website www.speakanimalhospital.org and completed forms may be submitted to our email: [email protected] or dropped off in person at our location. Thank you!

Kenickie
3 year old neutered male
Meet the handsome Kenickie!
Kenickie is a dashing young adult looking for a nice home to call his own. He's a long and lean kitty boy, found as an underweight stray that has gotten back to a healthy weight and overall good body condition. He's a laid back and easy going fella who does enjoy playing with toys, but he would much rather spend his time lounging around and watching out a window (Cat TV!). Kenickie is fine cohabitating with other friendly cats, but he is more independent than anything else. On occasion, when he isn't window gazing or lounging by himself he can be caught snuggling up beside a female kitty friend, living up to his namesake for sure! ;)

If you are interested in adopting Kenickie or any of our adoptable cats or kittens, please complete our adoption application and send it in for review. Applications can be found on our website www.speakanimalhospital.org and completed forms may be submitted to our email: [email protected]. Thank you!

Rufus!
18 month old neutered male

They say a picture speaks a thousand words, and Rufus here is proof of exactly that. :P
Sweet Rufus is deep down an absolute goof ball of cat with a whole lot of personality. He's an incredibly gentle boy with a whole lot of extra toes for all you polydactyl cat lovers out there! He does have a slight wobble to his back legs that we believe may be a result of a previous injury he sustained a while back which then healed before being found and surrendered to us. He can walk, run, jump and climb fairly normally, he just has a little flair to his step; it's just another special thing about him that makes him uniquely him!

Barry the Bearcat
3 year old neutered male

Meet Barry the Bearcat! Barry is handsome boy with soft medium length fur that is growing back after requiring a lion cut for medical reasons when he first arrived at our shelter. His fur is almost back to it's full length and Barry is now looking as handsome as ever! Barry gets along with other cats, but all in all he is a fairly independent guy. He loves a sunshine filled windowsill he can lay upon and enjoys passing the time watching the birds and squirrels outside. Barry can occasionally get overstimulated and reactive to loud noises, but mainly only if there are other cats around he feels he needs to look after. He's a pretty laid-back and easy going guy, but he does enjoy playing with a nice feathery wand toy every now and then. He's a big fan of treats and will even ask for some using his sweet little tiny 'mews'.

If you are interested in adopting Barry the Bearcat or any of our adoptable cats or kittens, please complete our adoption application and send it in for review. Rizzo
7 month old spayed female.
Meet the one and only Rizzo! Rizzo is an attention seeking sweetheart with a petite stature and big personality! She is a former mama cat despite her incredibly young age. She is best described as a little spitfire, always busy sniffing and searching around looking for any spare kibs that may have gotten left behind by someone else. Rizzo is a very independent girl; knowing what she wants and when she wants it and isn't afraid to show it! Rizzo hasn't been with us too long, but it seems like Rizzo could cohabitate with another kitty friend in a larger home environment, just as long as that kitty friend understands Rizzo is The Boss and that there will be no further discussion on the matter. :P
Rizzo's purrfect home however would be one where she is your one and only cat and could receive the royal treatment and spoils of a true queen. Rizzo can be bold in the way she communicates her feelings, so a home with experienced cat people well versed in reading cat body language and without young children would be best suited for her.

If you are interested in adopting Rizzo or any of our adoptable cats or kittens, please complete our adoption application and send it in for review. Applications can be found on our website www.speakanimalhospital.org and completed forms may be submitted to our email: [email protected].

Tortellini
14 month old spayed female

Meet the mama of our adorable pasta litter, Tortellini! Tortellini has quite the story that unfortunately we have heard time and time again. Her and her newborn kittens were dumped and left for dead on their rescuer's porch in the middle of a snowstorm back in January. Fortunately, the home owner was kind enough to get mama and babies inside to someplace warm and house them until they eventually came to us. After her kittens were fully weaned, Tortellini was spayed and fully vetted and is now ready to find her very own furever home!
When we say Tortellini is a sweetheart, it is more than just an understatement. She is SO incredibly nice and gentle, it's obvious she was a former mama kitty. She loves other cats and humans alike and would be a great solo cat companion for someone looking for a single furry friend, or she could be a great addition to a home with already established feline friends!

If you are interested in adopting Tortellini or any of our adoptable cats or kittens, please complete our adoption application and send it in for review. Applications can be found on our website www.speakanimalhospital.org and completed forms may be submitted to our email: [email protected]. Thank you!
