This is Luna. Her owner called I Speak Dog as soon as she brought Luna home and realized Luna was going to be a bit more challenging than her other dogs.

You are training your puppy with every interaction so if you are less than confident in what message you giving, we are here to help.

Our pro tip: ➡️ Your puppy's mom and littermates were shaping her behavior and holding her accountable right up until the minute you picked her up. Your puppy wants your guidance!

How many toys should I give my new puppy?

➡️ Your puppy should have a variety of toys to play with and chew on. You don’t need to buy half the store, but try to get a few different textures and sizes so he can explore.

Our pro tip: Keep all but four or five toys put away and rotate them. Your puppy will love the variety and not become overwhelmed with choices.

How can I get my puppy to wait for his food?

Our tip? ➡️ Puppies are born with the instinct to work for rewards, and just like us, are happier when they have jobs to complete. Practice getting your puppy to “work” for his food by sitting calmly before you put his bowl down.

Here's Lily, practicing a perfect "place" command!

Before training, Lily followed her mom from room to room and could not relax when her mom was not paying attention to her. This made it very challenging for her mom to work from home, cook a meal or just enjoy some quiet time.

But here she is now! Learning "Place" has turned out to be a game changer for Lily. Similarly to how meditation helps humans, "Place" has helped Lily gain the confidence to chill out on her own.

Q: Why won’t my dog come when called?

A: Simply put; because he has more interesting options! If we want our dogs to come on command we have to make ourselves extremely relevant to them. I.e., more interesting than other dogs or pizza crusts.

At I Speak Dog, we only teach the "come" command after your dog has mastered the other on-leash commands. Once your dog has made the connection through training that you are the most important thing in his life, he can begin the process of being trusted off-leash.

We understand that owners want their dogs to learn the come command asap, but if you had a teenager who barely paid attention to you in your own kitchen, would you expect her to answer your phone call when she was out at a great party with her friends? -Anne

How do you get your new puppy to get along with the other dogs in the house?🦮

➡️ If you are introducing a puppy to another dog already in your home, remember you are the leader and you make the rules for both of them. They do not get to resolve disputes between themselves.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Our pro tip? ➡️ Before bringing your new puppy inside, walk both dogs together on leashes. A little family intro can go a long way.

Why does my dog bark when the doorbell rings?
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
This is a popular question! The short answer is - he barks when the doorbell rings to let everyone know that he knows someone is there.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
With most problem behaviors at I Speak Dog, we do not worry so much about why they are happening but we just get right to fixing them. In a case like this one, we would work with you and your dog to help him shift his mindset. Instead of him taking the lead and feeling the need to be alert, we’ll help him understand that you’re the one in charge, and that you have his back!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
This is what we accomplish through our unique training system we have evolved over the past decade. He can still let out a bark, most of us appreciate that, but once you arrive and tell him “I’ve got this” he can go back to his own business.

Ouch! Tell us if this sounds familiar. You just adopted the cutest little puppy, but he won't stop nipping at you.

Q: What should I do if my puppy keeps biting?

A: Your puppy 𝐰𝐢𝐥𝐥 keep biting if you do not correct him. Our philosophy is to let your puppy know immediately that any kind of biting or nipping of humans is not tolerated. We try out several options in our puppy lessons, but the first step, even for very young puppies, is to stop playing, give your puppy a stern look, and say a distinct “no”. You may also want to point your finger at him. -Anne

We thought we’d take another look at some commonly asked questions surrounding dog behavior. Here’s our next question!

Q: Why is my dog hyperactive at times?

A: Probably because he can be! He sees something that excites him and you haven’t demonstrated to him (in a way he understands) that this is a time for him to chill out.

Our philosophy at I Speak Dog is to communicate with dogs in a way they understand. In this situation, this would mean calmly instructing him to sit or go to his place instead of jumping around like a wild animal ;-) -Anne

Today, we’d like to feature Mavis - a 2 year old mix who was previously up for adoption through Friends of the Pound. She spent a few days with Anne of I Speak Dog improving her manners to prepare for finding her forever home.

As shown in this clip, Mavis makes quick progress in learning new commands, appropriate walking behavior, and interacting politely with other dogs. Check out this video to see her progress for yourself, and make sure to visit our website for details on our program offerings!

It’s about time for another puppy training tip!

A crate will be your, and your puppy’s, best friend! Crate training is the absolute best way to housebreak a puppy, as well as giving your baby dog a place to take a break for a nap. Pro tip: Start with a very small crate so your puppy cannot make a mess on one side then move to the other side to be comfortable. Borrow or purchase an inexpensive one for the first month.

We adapt all of our programs at I Speak Dog to be perfect for puppies’ unique needs. If you’re looking for help training your puppy or furry friend of any age, please visit our website! (Website link in bio.)

Let’s take a look at another one of our service offerings in depth - the Dog Makeover!

In short, this is where we do the hardest work for you. By working 1-on-1 with your dog, they’ll receive individualized attention that will result in an immediate and drastic transformation of behavior. If you feel as though your dog could use a jumpstart on having their behavior completely made new, this may be the appropriate program for you.

The Dog Makeover program consists of a half day of training offsite with your dog, followed by three 75-minute private lessons in your home. If necessary, additional days or lessons can be added for dogs with particular challenging behaviors. The program can also be expanded to include off-leash reliability and remote collar training upon request.
Is this sounding like something your dog needs? Talk to us! Reach out to us on our socials or feel free to inquire on our website (link in bio!)

Introducing Kyoto!

Before training, walking Kyoto was quite a challenge. He constantly pulled on the leash and dragged his owner around the Seaport. (Sound familiar?)

So his owner called I Speak Dog for help. Kyoto’s walking behavior has already done a complete 180, after just one lesson. Now he walks calmly with his owner and everyone enjoys themselves. In fact Kyoto’s new skills attracted the attention of other dog owners in his Seaport neighborhood who then inquired about training with I Speak Dog.
When you teach your dog what you want and follow through consistently, change can happen remarkably quickly.

If your dog’s behavior could use some more work, we’d encourage you to reach out to us on our website or socials. No matter their age, breed, or size, we can work with any dog!
