Here is a small clip of Rooney working in a busy coffee shop while I waited for my drinks. Eyes on me for the most part (we can't expect our dogs not to watch for possible dangers or to be concerned with the presence of others, but this was good). Following the luring hand well, good heel load. When I give the hand gesture for a down (right after her last sit) you can see that instinct to give me her paw temporarily. Her family has taught her sit then paw so much that she was clearly anticipating the request from me as well. Remember to randomize your prompts to avoid anticipation. We want our companion dogs to be attentive and wait for our instructions when we are in work mode. A perfect example of what happens I f you have them perform the same series of actions too frequently. Jesse is a handful, still potty training and zero obedience. His elderly owner contacted me to assess him. Although she was very concerned he might not be trainable, I taught him down with only a hand gesture to illustrate how quickly he could be taught with the right approach. The client was impressed, though she may be reluctant or fearful that she won't follow protocol. This is definitely a situation where the owner needs more training than the dog.
