BREED FUN FACT FRIDAY: BOXER-

The boxer's body is compact and powerful. Their muzzle is short and blunt with a jaw with an under bite. The ears are set high, either cropped or kept natural. The tail is set high and usually docked. The boxer's coat is short, smooth in fawn, brindle, tan, black and often with white markings. Boxers also come in a white coat, that cannot be registered in many clubs. Many white boxers are found to be deaf.

The boxer is happy, high spirited, curious, playful and energetic. Highly intelligent and quick to learn, they excel at competitive obedience. Loyal and affectionate, the breed makes a great family pet. Boxers need daily mental and physical exercise. Without it, they can become high strung and hard to control. They usually enjoy a great game of fetch!

CHILL OUT!! We are having some hot weather this week.... Giant doggie activity ice cubes are just the thing to relieve the dog days of summer.

Start by adding some chicken stock, beef stock or just water in a large food storage container. Then add the fixin's!! ( Carrots, Apples, Biscuits, Kong’s and toys)

FREEZE!

Keep your dog busy for hours while you entertain friends or get yard work done. This is especially great for the doggie diggers in our lives. Keep them cool and busy!

Housetraining is one of the most important steps towards having a good relationship with your dog. An un-housetrained dog can be very stressed as well as his owner.

In many senses, housetraining is a relatively straightforward process. We prevent accidents in the house and we reward our dogs for going outside. But as we all know pulling this off day in and day out until our dog is fully trained take vigilance, patience, plenty of commitment and above all, consistency.
Our WNY weather can make it more difficult for our dogs to eliminate (or want to eliminate) outside, which creates a problem that lasts way past Spring and Summer for us.

SNIFF! Dogs identify their potty areas by smell- so stick to one potty spot outside and make sure you are neutralizing accident areas in the house a well. (Products like Simple Solution and Nature’s Miracle are best!)

Always, initiate taking your dog outside yourself. Do not wait for them to tell you. For many dogs, their signal is to give you eye contact, and we miss that cue every single time!

Say thank you! Make sure you are reinforcing your dog going outside by giving praise immediately after the act.

Most importantly, do not wait until you have a problem before seeking help. Change up your routine at the first sign of housetraining trouble, so one or two accidents do not turn into a bad habit.
