joyfulpumpkins.com My passion for farming initially grew out of my first career in animal welfare and a deep concern for agriculture’s devastating environmental impacts. I quickly found that there was no way to live but with my hands in the soil and my heart a steward for the lives of
animals and health of the land. I’ve worked in urban farm development, organic vegetable production, and have now have found my niche in perennial pasture farming. I’m currently developing a grazing management and cropping plan for a 4 acre riverside property in Carbondale, Colorado, on loan from a generous supporter. I have a special fondness for heritage hogs and turkeys, and am deeply committed to improving feed systems, husbandry practices, and production efficiency to give sustainability a competitive edge in agricultural and our community. All pet care profits go towards funding Joyful Pumpkin Farm in it’s first year
After more than two years employed at Boulder Humane Society and several years of experience working under equine, emergency, and exotics veterinarians, I can offer your pets loving, attentive care that you can trust.
…And with two teenage border collies of my own and a passion for trail running and mtn biking, I can meet the activity needs of the most exuberant canines!

Twinkle Twinkle: Part I

Just found out that bantam ducks exist! Ahhhh I want to fill my back yard with them SO CUTE
My first dozen duck eggs!
Those of you who encouraged me to switch to red wigglers...wow you were so right! I'm pretty sure they've doubled since I got them two weeks ago. They're not quite as cute as the earth worms, but they've got much better work ethic :)
I'd like to try this for the bears this year!
In the Masai community where 13-year-old Richard Turere lives, cattle are all-important. But lion attacks were growing more frequent. In this short, inspiring talk, the young inventor shares the solar-powered solution he designed to safely scare the lions away.
There are much healthier and safer ways to reduce pests, crop disease, and weeds. GMOs are a solution to a problem indicative of harmful farming practices, and they only reduce usage of chemical toxins temporarily, leaving us with more resistant pests and fewer beneficial species (such as pollinators and pest predators). Instead of continuing to fight this battle against pests with untold collateral damage, let's make our agricultural ecosystems healthy enough to out-compete and tolerate "invaders." The corporate-funded scientists tell us GMOs are safe, just like they told us DDT was safe.
I just signed a petition to The Colorado State House: We the people of Colorado demand products of non-GMO status! All of the people of CO deserve quality foods that will not cause deprecation to our health and future health of all beings.
Interesting farm incubation program! Would love to work towards something similar!

Cage Free? Free Range? Pastured?
Watch and vote for Story of an Egg, a film about the origins of terms like “cage-free.”
"Often others ask if I really believe people will be willing to "give up" the wonderful things we have for the mere privilege of avoiding extinction. It doesn't occur to them that living in an unsustainable way is also about giving up things, very precious things like security, hope, light-heartedness, and freedom from anxiety, fear, and guilt." - Beyond Civilization

Thanks for passing this on Bobby Jones! So wonderful to hear Savory distill his message into 20 minutes :)
“Desertification is a fancy word for land that is turning to desert,” begins Allan Savory in this quietly powerful talk. And it's happening to about two-thirds of the world’s grasslands, accelerating climate change and causing traditional grazing societies to descend into social chaos. Savory has de...
