Do dental water additives actually help your pet’s oral health? Water additives work by breaking down tartar and freshening your pet’s breath as they drink from their water bowl. If using a water additive, be sure to follow the usage instructions and choose one that is free of xylitol or birch sugars, which are toxic to pets. Feel free to check with your veterinarian or a board-certified veterinary dentist if the product you chose would be beneficial for your dog or cat to use.

Some pets are really good at hiding when they’re in pain, but there are a few telltale signs that your dog or cat may be dealing with a painful dental issue. Look for signs such as changes in eating habits (a decreased interest in hard kibble or treats), pawing at the mouth, and excessive drooling.

How many of you have had a root canal 🙋? Animals sometimes need them, too! Root canal therapy, also known as endodontics, is necessary when a pet has a broken or diseased tooth. Importantly, a root canal can often save the tooth from extraction.

Characterized by ulcers and lesions around the canine and premolar teeth, canine stomatitis is caused by the response of the immune system to plaque that accumulates on the teeth. Depending on the severity of the condition, some patients require chronic medications and surgical extractions. Learn more in this article by our very own Dr. John Lewis:

Swelling in your pet’s neck and/or face is often due to a problem in a salivary gland or salivary duct. When this swelling occurs (or recurs) because of diseased salivary tissue, sometimes it can’t be successfully resolved with conservative measures such as drainage and antibiotics. Therefore, surgery to remove the affected salivary tissue may permanently correct the problem.

How often should you replace your pet’s toothbrush? Great question! Though the Veterinary Oral Health Council doesn’t have any specific guidelines regarding toothbrush lifespans, you should replace your pet’s toothbrush if the bristles are frayed, missing, or dirty. Keep your pet’s toothbrush clean by rinsing it under water after each use and allowing it to air dry.

Trivia Question! Did you guess correctly? 🐶🐱
03/20/2024
Choosing the right toothbrush for your furry friend is key to maintaining their pearly whites and overall well-being 🪥🦷. This ensures effective cleaning without causing harm to their gums or enamel. Consider factors like size, bristle softness, and handle design when selecting a toothbrush tailored to your pet's needs. Some pets may prefer a handled toothbrush while others may like the feel of a finger brush. Try a couple out until you find what works best for your pet!

If you welcomed a new puppy or kitten into your lives recently, you may be wondering how soon you should start at-home dental care. It is recommended to wait until they are at least 6 months old and have all their adult teeth before routinely brushing their teeth. However, don’t hesitate to introduce a toothbrush or fingerbrush early on to help them get acclimated to the tool and having their mouths touched. Remember, it's also essential to start annual oral exams early to ensure their dental health remains in great shape!

🎉 Celebrating 5 Years! 🎉 On March 11, 2019, VDS Chadds Ford opened its doors to provide expert dental care for our furry friends. It all began with Gertie, a courageous pup born with a cleft palate. After repairing her palate, we saw a dog named Auggie who had presented for an anesthetic recheck of a previously repaired cleft palate. Today, we celebrate Gertie, Auggie, and all the patients who have placed their oral health in our hands. Thank you to our wonderful clients and referring veterinarians for entrusting us with their beloved companions' care. Here's to many more years of smiles and wagging tails! #VDSAnniversary #PetDentalCare

Welcome to the second Veterinary Dentistry Specialists location, VDS Chadds Ford.
When your pet requires professional dental and oral care, it’s important to have a specialist you can trust. At Veterinary Dentistry Specialists (VDS), we’ve made it our mission to be just that – your pet’s oral health expert. We are the only practices entirely dedicated to dentistry and oral surgery for pets and where full-time board-certified veterinary dentists and full-time board-certified veterinary anesthesiologists are on staff to ensure the best care and outcomes.
At the helm of VDS Chadds Ford, are two well-respected specialists, veterinary dentist John Lewis, VMD, FAVD, DAVDC and veterinary anesthesiologist S. Bryce Dooley, DVM, MS, DACVAA.
Our first location is based in Mount Laurel, New Jersey, founded and owned by board-certified veterinary dentistry specialist, Carlos Rice, DVM, DAVDC.
At VDS, advanced services are available for the care of orofacial conditions and diseases that affect the mouth, teeth, jaws, and face. These services cover tooth restoration, periodontal surgery, oral oncologic surgery, jaw fractures, salivary gland diseases, endodontics, orthodontics, palate surgery, and much more.
It’s important to know that, when appropriately administered by a highly trained veterinary expert, anesthesia confers very little risk for cats and dogs. That’s why we have a full-time, board-certified veterinary anesthesiologist who is involved in every case we undertake.
In partnership with primary care veterinarians and other veterinary specialists across the region, VDS accepts referred patients Monday – Thursday, 7:30 am – 7:00 pm. For more information or to make an appointment, call 484-775-0557 or email [email protected].
