DOGS & KIDS
-
More often than not, when a dog ends up biting a kid, the first thing I hear is "it came out of nowhere!" But the reality is that dogs DON'T bite out of the blue.
Even if you are familiar with a dog's body language, you have to remember that kids don't have that ability. And...kids will be kids. But the best way to teach your kids (and yourself) how to stay safe around dogs, we have to think on the lines of prevention.
This chart gives you the 5 levels of supervision - from RED to GREEN. More often than not, the bite could have been prevented ALWAYS happen at the RED and ORANGE levels.
So the rule of thumb for all children should be to stay at the GREEN level. The more you teach them this, the more they will focus on being in that level, which will help them stay safe, but also get to learn how to respect a dog. The more they learn how to do that, the more they will learn how to earn their trust also!
If you're struggling with your dog's aggression or nipping, they will not "grow out of it." Get some advice and training from a pro - send us a message!
