UPDATE: Jessica got adopted !!!! Jessica is doing incredibly after her hernia surgery. She is a sweet and gentle little cat. We are so happy that she is now comfortable, out of pain and ready to start her new life. She just needs the right family to call her own. She should be downstairs in the main room in a couple of weeks.
Justice would like to personally thank C. C. for her donation for the supply drive. I don’t think he is going to share😂.
The cats absolutely love their new cat trees and scratching post!! We have more posts to put together.
HAAL will be closed to the public Sunday July 14, 2024. We will reopen next weekend with regular hours.
This is Jessica at the vets before her surgery. You can see how huge the hernia was. It is believed she had this for awhile and it probably enlarged over time.
You can say our Supply Drive helped saved a life this week. The Amazon delivery person rang my doorbell at 6:30 AM Tuesday morning. Since I was now awake, I checked text messages and found this picture from a Good Samaritan . She found this cat on the sidewalk and didn’t want to just leave her. I sent the picture to our amazing vet Dr. Houston and she said it looked like a hernia and was probably fixable. The Good Samaritan transported the cat to HAAL, and we drove directly to the Cameron Animal Hospital. Meet Jessica. This little Torti Was diagnosed with a massive umbilical hernia. She was put on the surgery list for Wednesday. That day she was spayed and the hernia repaired. Since she was added as an emergency surgery the staff at CAH stayed after hours well into the evening to get her surgery done. She is now recuperating at HAAL. She has a slight wobble in her walk and we will see in the weeks to come if she has a neurological disorder or simply has a wobble from walking with that hernia for so long. We cannot stress enough how thankful we are for Dr. Houston and her team at Cameron Animal Hospital for going above and beyond for little Jessica. Also, a big thank you for the help and support of our donors who make these rescues possible.

Thank you to Garson-Parkin family, the Khan family , the Ponti, family and Miki T. These are just some of the amazing donations that have come in so far. Thank you!!!
Sriracha approves. Thank you Sally W., Chris, Gina, Dunkin and Chickpea!! We will be removing some items off of Amazon as they come in. Chewy will give you the tally .
What a great start to our Summer Supply Drive!! A shout out to Anita, Dawn and Karen! Amazon tells us who the donation is from, Chewy just tells us that a donation is coming. So if you use Chewy please send us a message so we can thank you properly! Our supply drive is running the whole summer.
It’s time for our second annual Summer supply drive! Last year’s was such a success and really helped us at a time when adoptions and donations were slow. Once again we are using an Amazon and Chewy wish list. The items will be delivered to a volunteer’s home so that they don’t have to be left out in public at the shelter. Of course we also would love to have friends drop off items and spend some time with the cats too. Amazon’s list covers cleaning supplies and some food. Chewy’s list covers food, toys and a couple of cat trees. The cats truly enjoyed last year’s cat tree and it’s time for a new one.

Meet Fuego. This gorgeous cat was stuck up a tree for 3 days! The fire department had to come to the rescue. He is playful and loves to wrestle with his friend Ian. He is about 2 years old.
Polar Bear is a sweet bigger girl who we estimate to be about 4 years old. Previously being in a home, Polar Bear tends to stay in her house while we're here, but sometimes ventures out after we leave. She gives cute little mews when she wants pets and loving, and would do well in a quieter home where she can join you on the couch and look out the windows.
Beautiful Tortilina loves people and loves to be petted . She doesn’t like to leave her cage so we make sure she has lots of love and snuggles . We leave her door open at night in case she wants to walk around when it is quiet. Tortilina would do great in a quiet home that wants a cat to snuggle with on the couch.
Meet big, beautiful Karen. Karen is a funny and sometimes spicy girl. She accepts love on her terms and will tell you when she has had enough . She is a confident girl that knows what she wants. She does love to play and loves being around people. She would be great for the experienced cat owner who appreciates an independent cat.
Meet Rum and Raisin. These two independent girls were very shy when they first came to HAAL and wouldn’t leave their cage. Now they have made new feline and human friends. They enjoy treats, looking out of the windows and simply being a part of the family. They often like to observe from the comfort of their window perch, but Raisin also has a new found zest for play. We know there is a perfect home out there for them.
June is adopt a cat month! We will be highlighting some of our amazing cats throughout the month, starting with Leia . This sweet tabby was found rummaging through garbage cans. She was someone’s pet at one time but somehow found herself trying to survive outside. Leia loves people and wants to know what’s going on. She is OK with other cats but would rather find a home where she is the queen . Leia is FIV+ which means she has the virus that can cause feline AIDS. This tends to scare people away. But Feline AIDS is not the deadly disease it was once believed to be. In fact most positive cats can live long healthy lives with a good diet, little stress and lots of love. She is constantly overlooked because she is positive and we hope June will be the month when that changes.
Marvel is a shy young boy who loves playing with other young cats. We think the right home and family could bring him out of his shell. Or should we say, peel? 😸🍌
⚠️ HAAL will be closed to the public this weekend, May 4 and May 5. Our volunteers will spend the days doing some spring cleaning both inside and outside of the shelter. We will reopen to the public Saturday, May 11 at 12 noon. 😺

Just wanted to let everyone know that the Magnificent 7 is now the Dynamic Duo. Timothy and Ian are the last of the family to be adopted. We would love to see them go together. Both are very sweet but have stronger personalities with some of the other cats. And as you can see Ian knows where the kitchen is when lunch is being served .
Hi everyone. This is just a reminder that HAAL has NOT authorized any sales of merchandise, such as hoodies. If you see an add please ignore and you can also report. We have already hid and reported the most current user posting HAAL merchandise, but they change posters all the time.
Rum and Raisin have the right idea today - rainy day cuddles are the best! These 7-ish year old sisters are shy but sweet, and love bird watching both in real life and on YouTube 🖥 They would do well in a quiet home with someone who is patient with them as they get more comfortable.
The Maginificent 7 finally have official names. Can you guess the theme ? The little girl is named Honor and the boys are as follows: Dalton, Ian, Pierce, Timothy, Craig, Daniel. Four have had their first vet visit where they received their first vaccines and were tested for FIV/FeLV. The other three will go this week. They have all put on weight, are active, playful and sooo sweet.
Thank you Rachel for sharing the story of the Magnificent Seven! 😺😻😼😸😻😽😺
Homeless Animal Adoption League saved seven kittens that were stuffed into a sports bag. Please show them some love this Valentine's Day!
A special update on the Magnificent 7:
After another rescue reached out to us and with some investigation of our own, we have determined that the Magnificent 7 were part of a hoarding situation from another city. We also now believe that our "Good Samaritan" was more than likely involved with the hoarders. This means that she knew the cats, made up her story, faked her empathetic response, and was involved with cruelly forcing 7 sweet cats into a single carrier. It angers us, to say the least, that the cats' lives were put in jeopardy and we were lied to, but we were infuriated when we learned that the other rescue had made arrangements and paid a clinic to get all of the cats spayed and neutered, and these people didn’t take the help. They felt the better plan was to lie and manipulate and deceive, and put the burden of their care on us. We do not know if any legal action can be taken, but our primary concern now is these beautiful babies. With the kindness of everyone who reached out to us, they will have everything they need, and we will make sure that they will never be in fear and have to worry that their humans will hurt them.
We thank everyone again for their support and well wishes for these amazing cats, and we will continue to share updates on how they are doing.
Hi everyone. I just wanted to give you a quick update on the Magnificent Seven. They are all doing well. We are still dealing with loose stool and one f***l test has come back negative for parasites, but we will retest and do some deworming just in case. We have also put them on a special diet and are giving them probiotics. We believe we have two litters. Three older boys that are black and white and four younger ones, three black and one gray. They have been running around the isolation room and all are full of energy and playful.
THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!! We have surpassed our goal and raised $4693 for the Magnificent 7!! We are truly grateful .
Quick update on the Magnificent 7 fundraiser. We are at $3473 of our $4000 goal. We are humbled by the support we have received from the community. Today all 7 cats got flea treatment and will get two more treatments in the next two months. The next challenge is what is causing all the loose stool. Hopefully treating for parasites will solve the problems. They are all eating well and are starting to play in their cages. Since they have the isolation room to themselves we will start to let them out to stretch their legs and play. Thank you all for the kind words and generosity.
The Magnificent 7 look good this morning. So far we have raised over $1800 for their care. THANK YOU and keep sharing.
This bag was found at a park. But it wasn’t empty. Inside were SEVEN cats ranging in age from 5-10 months! These terrified babies were so cramped if they weren’t found when they were, the ones on the bottom wouldn’t have survived. Why were they left there? Was someone try to help them or hurt them? Thank God a Good Samaritan found them during her walk and then found us. The seven cats are very sweet. They allowed us to hold and pet them. They are exhausted from this horrible day. Now we need everyone to help spread the word. Taking in 7 unplanned cats is not quite what we were ready for today. In fact we had two intakes scheduled already, bringing our intake number to 9 in one day. Fortunately we had space in our isolation room for the seven, but this will close intakes for a few months, as we don’t have empty cages downstairs to move them to when they are ready. But what we really need is to raise funds for their care. Seven cats means 21 vaccines, seven FIV/ FeLV tests, 6 neuters and 1 spay, medication for deworming and flea control. And that’s just the beginning. You never know what other health issues may show up. We need to raise at least $4000 for their basic care. If you can, please help and share. We will post updates in the days to come.

In honor of Valentine's Day this week, we wanted to share our resident Romeo and Juliet. Spirit loooooves Mahogany and simply couldn't keep his eyes off her! Both are about 6 months old - Spirit got fixed this week (on Valentine's day ironically) and Mahogany is scheduled for this upcoming week. Both are available for adoption, individually or possibly together! #isitloveorisithormones #adoptdontshop #njcats #njkittens #catsofinstagram #kittensofinstagram #supportyourlocalanimalshelter #cliftonnj #cliftoncats
Mahogany found the treasure trove of toys while we were cleaning today 😹 Her 2 sisters have already found their furever homes but she's still waiting for her perfect match. This sweet girl is about 6 months old and will be getting spayed this month.
The Magnificent 7 are doing remarkably well considering how they came to us. Thank you again to everyone who's donated to help with their care. Hard to believe we've only had them a week! #TheMagnificentSeven #luckynumber7 #adoptdontshop #supportyourlocalanimalshelter

Fun fact #15! How many cries does Leia get out until we acquiesce and let her out of her cage? 40/until we can't take it anymore!
Funny fact #12! How many times a week do the volunteers (okay mostly Joann 😉) lose the lid to the treats jar? Evvvvvvvveryday 🤣🤪
Santiago continues to thrive at the shelter. He has the run of the office. Although he is Leukemia positive we know that there is someone out there for him. A home to call his own. Please share so we can find this amazing boy his forever home. #FeLV.
We have been taking video lately to create a story behind the scenes to show some of the work we do everyday. I was not expecting to start with this story. Yesterday morning I got quite a surprise at 5:30 AM.
Santiago is a beautiful sweet kitten. When he came to us we thought he would find a home in no time. Then we got news no cat shelter wants to hear. Santiago is Leukemia +. Unlike feline AIDS , Leukemia is a virus that can spread to other cats by sharing bowls, mutual grooming, and sharing litter boxes. So Santiago can’t play with other cats. We were so fortunate to find placement for him at Tabby’s Place, but three days before his neuter Santiago took a turn for the worse and became extremely anemic. The decision was made to keep Santiago in our care as we felt his time was extremely limited. Santiago had other plans. He received a shot that had the potential to stimulate red blood cell production. And so far it has worked. He is up and running again and spending time in the office to play . We don’t know for sure how the virus will progress. Leukemia cats can have happy, fulfilling lives for many years. We would love him to find an amazing adopter and a family to call his own.
Beautiful Cookie gave birth to three precious babies last Wednesday. She is an amazing mother and let volunteers be there with her. We, like all of you are feeling the financial crunch. Food, litter, medical care and basic supplies have gone up in cost. If you are able please donate to HAAL today so we can continue to save more cats like Cookie and her family. https://www.haalnj.org/donate.html
